This park contains 11 different ecological habitats and is a sanctuary for nesting sea turtles. Situated on the Northern Caribbean side of Costa Rica, in the province of Limon, it is approximately 90 miles northeast of the capital city of San José. Accessible only by air or water, Tortuguero is the most important nesting site in the entire western half of the Caribbean for the green turtle. It is known as “Tico Amazon” (Costa Rican Amazon) due to the fact that in Tortuguero there are no roads; the principle means of transportation being the dozens of fresh water canals throughout the park.

Watching a sea turtle lay her eggs on the beach, by the moonlight, was very moving, magical! My husband, my friends and I refer to this "turtle experience" as the best moment of our whole trip to Costa Rica. Two things you should know about...More

Amazing!!! What an incredible job this country has gone in the name of conservation. The naturalists/tour guides are full of knowledge and passion for their job and the protection of the native species. Definitely recommend!!

Great national park to visit. I didn't realise there was a long hike you could do. Easy to do without a guide - if you do it one get a good one.

Just write a long one for the wonderful Tortuga Lodge and Gardens. I can't say enough about how beautiful and remote this area was!

Being a primary rainforest, there are many birds. Problem is that one can hear them more than see them. There are small animals like monkeys and armadillo. A haven for birders and nature photographers.

We ended up flying from San Jose, partly for time and partly for the fun of it!
