This was our gem of a find! We don’t recall this being there in our previous trips.

We had spent the morning on a tour with some lovely folks from the UK who were also staying at the same guesthouse as us. When we were finished, we told them we had not eaten breakfast yet, needed a coffee at least and suggested we do this together. They suggested Caribbeans, having been there previously.

It is a really cute place. You can do a “chocolate tour” through them if you so desire. They have a climate-controlled room with a variety of expensive chocolates you can purchase (and we did) and they have a coffee shop that serves up amazing coffee and we each had an omelette and banana/chocolate muffin as well. The omelettes were amazing, delicious and filling. The muffins were a very special treat. The combination of the fresh banana and hand made chocolate is indescribable and the best I’ve ever eaten. Equally, the coffee was full bodied, aromatic and “good to the last drop”! We sat in the open second floor to enjoy the breeze and the view.

The owner makes his way through both levels chatting with the patrons to ensure we are enjoying the offerings we’ve chosen and that we’re enjoying our time in Costa Rica. The fellow who is behind the counter taking orders on the main level is delightful, a little shy but once you get him chatting he is wonderful. He was great at helping us understand the differences in the chocolate … they all list percentages of cacao in them and it’s not always easy to understand what that means when it comes to taste. He cleared that up in no time while we spent US$40 on four bars of chocolate … large bars of course … some of which are gifts.

We liked this place so much that we went back for breakfast on New Year’s Day. Sadly, it was closed so we missed out on a second visit. That said, we highly recommend this place.

We had a lot of fun on the cacao tour which we can only recommend to everyone. We not only learned a lot about the production of cocoa, but also saw a lot of animals during the tour (sloths, toucans, etc.). Before or after the tour, it is definitely worthwhile to enjoy the café.

This tour was extremely enjoyable and so informative! Our tour guide, Danielle was wonderful, showing us all the amazing wildlife and flora on the short hike up to the chocolate factory. We learned so much, not just about the chocolate making process, but about the area in general and the importance of making sustainability an integral part of the process. Really highly rated, a must do with Danielle if you are in the area and the chocolate was delicious!

Excellent coffee drinks as well as chocolate drinks, both hot and cold. Sipping chocolate, cocoa. Chocolate tasting was fantastic. We also did their chocolate tour with guide Dexter. Beautiful hike, saw the process of producing chocolate by hand. Then an incredible chocolate tasting at the end. Their chocolate is phenomenal. We ended up buying 15 bars to bring home

We had such a great time at the tour.
Dexter is a wonderful guide, very knowledgeable, and a very good english.
We saw some wild animals like sloths and Tuscans and some toads.
The tour was very interesting, we learn a lot about the cacao and the making of chocolate here in Costa Rica.
Highly recommended!!

We did the chocolate tour and loved it! Oscar, our guide, was pleasant, funny and shared information about the chocolate making process and the local area. We were able to sample things throughout the process and it was very tasty! We saw animals on our hike up to the "factory" which was an added bonus.

My boyfriend and I did the Chocolate tour with our guide Dexter. Dexter was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We learned all about the history of how Caribeans coffee and chocolate came about and the entire process of how they make their chocolate. I learned a lot as I had no idea how chocolate is actually made. We got to try the cacao fruit and went through every single step in the process of chocolate making. We got to sample all of the different chocolate bars they make and bought several bars afterwards. A must try for all chocolate lovers.

We also got a cup of coffee before starting the tour and it was some of the best coffee I’ve ever had!

We had so much fun on this very educational tour! The hike up was wonderful - our guide pointed out many different types of wildlife, including poison dart frogs, a sloth and lots of monkeys. The view from the top is stunning and we learned a lot about the chocolate making process. The highlight was of course getting to sample the chocolates. If we ever make it back to Puerto Viejo, I will definitely come back for another tour.

Delicious and large breakfast portions. Vegetarian egg and cheese burrito was outstanding. They have a meat version, too. Fruit, yogurt, and granola was very nice. Iced and hot coffee is offered. Great variety of chocolate beverages, too. Friendly people. I just wish they opened earlier than 8:30 am. I am an early riser.

Our family went for the chocolate tour at Caribeans. When paying, we were told it would be $125 USD. We checked our credit card statement and they charged us $175 USD. We will never return. Beware of the fraudulent behavior of this company.

Tour guide was fine! Absolutely adored him and we had a good time. Unfortunately, deceiving us about the price is not acceptable. I’ll be sharing this information in all my travel groups to warn others.
