Neighbourhood: People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.

Loved this museum. Had lived in Shanghai for over a year before ever going. Wish I had been sooner and had taken visitors. The model of Shanghai is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen. Great rainy day, or bad air day activity.

I visited the Urban Planning Exhibition Center where there is a large model of the city of Shanghai. It provided me a great understanding of the city itself and the topographic features like the rivers. If you are not a map person or a person interested in understanding where you are visiting, skip this. But, for those of you wishing to better understand how a fishing village became a city of 30 million and an international financial and trade capital, don't miss this.

Shanghai is growing so fast and furious that a new piece or section is inserted every week. This exhibit gives you a picture of the growth and the exhibit explains how the city has grown and the measures that are being taken to grow the city.

This place gives you a glimpse of the city of Shanghai, how it was planned, constructed and how it was developed. Its importance in terms of minerals, business, etc. It has a huge model of the city. Also, it gives you a virtual tour of the city by 9 cameras explaining the highlights in animation format.

We were very impressed with the scale model here. The display for the 1930's on the lower floor we didn't think very good and found a little disappointing, it was just a car and a couple of other things. We loved the display with the old photos though on one of the other floors but the scale model is by far worth visiting along.

Closed for renovations since 1st December, with no specified date for reopening. There is still plenty other things to do nearby (or even underground for a few pics of old Shanghai) including the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai History Museum and a gaming arcade for the energetic.

Unfortunately, it sounds like this museum will be closed for renovations shortly as it is apparently "outdated" after being open for about 2-3 decades, but we found the pre-renovation museum quite fascinating. There are photos and maps of early Shanghai, building up to a huge diorama of current Shanghai, and exhibits about environmental preservation, waste management, expansion of the metro, etc - the future of Shanghai. I'm sure post-renovation it will be even more spectacular.

I came to see the scale model of this amazing city. The hall also has other displays, including history, geology, and urban planning.

There are so many things to explore! From old Shanghai to the new times, a model of the Garden Bridge with a tram as well as a model of the city of Shanghai, "only" the inner ring area but with a really amazing light show.
You can also visit the 360° cinema, have a look at the PuDong Airport, the deep water harbour with the DongHai Bridge, just to name a few!
Make sure in advance the museum is open to the public, sometimes there are exhibitions. It is closed on mondays as far as I remember.
