On our way down from the observation deck at the Oriental Pearl Tower (see my review), we unloaded next to the entry to the museum. I'm a sucker for museums, and this one is very good!
Follow the exhibits in order, and you'll see how Shanghai evolved over hundreds of years. What makes it special is that many of the exhibits are miniature or life-sized mannequins demonstrating typical scenes of everyday life. It's all very nicely done. Plus the English language signs do a very good job of explaining what you see.
2 thumbs up!

The displays are well done and engaging for all ages. I especially liked the walk through the streets of Shanghai over the decades, and the display of transportation modes, from a wheelbarrow to a Buick Regal. Save money and don't take the elevator trip in the Oriental Pearl. Go to this museum, then head over to Jinmao tower to get the same view for free.

This is situated in the shopping mall area below the Pearl Tower, it looks small from the outside but it really is quite big.
It is actually called "上海城市历史发展陈列馆" in Chinese, it literally means "Shanghai City Development History Exhibition Hall". Do not confuse it with the Shanghai History Museum (上海历史博物馆)or the Shanghai Museum (上海博物馆), or else you will have a hard time asking for directions.
Single ticket 35RMB (enter from Entrance 2), but most visitors will buy the bundle ticket that includes the tower visit. For history buffs, reserve at least 2-3 hoursand DO rent the audio guide, or else the exhibition will be quite meaningless.
Good : It shows the transformation of Shanghai over a few hundred years, from a poor Jiangnan farming area, transforming to the vibrant port city just before the second world war. BUT you need to rent the audio guide (10RMB) to know all these wonderful history and details.
The exhibit are mainly made up of life-like wax figures (as good as Madam Tussauds') and models, so if you are expecting to see real artefacts, sorry you are in the wrong place.
The exhibits cover a wide range of topics including economy, trade, political and transport. The exhibition also tells the story of how the Westerners forced open the doors of China, set up settlements in Shanghai and introduced their culture and lifestyle to the Chinese. It also shows how the locals took in Western culture, and made it their own with a unique Shanghainese flavour.
The full exhibition is HUGE, more than 10,000sqm, and there are benches and toilets within the exhibition area for visitors to use, that's very considerate.
Bad: No staff is stationed within the exhibition hall, if you need help or directions, there is no one to turn to.
No staff to stop curious visitors to touch the exhibits, a pity that some wax figures have lost its original "skin" colour after being touched so many times.
Audio guide is not updated, couldn't find more information for some interesting exhibits.

I took my grade 1 students on a field trip to this museum. I found that many of the exhibits had no written information about the items on display. I was guessing most of the time about what I was looking at. I would not pay to visit this museum.

The museum is on the ground floor of the tower and its worth the money. here are many exhibitions that present the old history of the city stretching from the opium wars to the recent economic boom.
information is provided in English and Chinese so it is worth reading about each exhibition.

If you are someone who enjoys looking at things more than reading, this museum is for you.
Went back here after 10 years to bring our 5 year old daughter here. For the second time, I wasn't disappointed. The museum presented 4 halls/exhibits in a very interesting visual display, somewhat chronologically.
Found at the basement of The Oriental Pearl Tower (which was a better experience than seeing smoggy shanghai at the top of the tower imo) the museum is divided into 4 halls and each hall depicting the socio-cultural changes that shanghai had to go through over the course of history. What impressed me was the update that they have done to the museum that included interactive and multi-media scenes for the young visitors to understand Shanghai's rich cultural and historical past in a more exciting way. The very detailed wax display of shanghai scenes, and the architectural details in the hallways, was at par with Madame Tussaud's.
Please visit this museum to make your stop at the Oriental Tower more worthwhile. You will not leave empty handed. Museum pass is included in the Oriental Tower ticket package.

Enjoyed this walk around area at the base of the Tower. Alot of history about the changes in Shanghai due to the English and French influence.
A definite must see if you want to understand Shanghai!

Just wow. I liked this museum better than the Shanghai Museum. It is located inside the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The miniature houses, wax figures, dioramas, etc. were excellently-made. I'm not a museum lover, but I was really amazed with this one. A must-visit!

I cannot really say but would advise that you ask the museum if they provide wheel chairs. I can only confirm that the place is wheel chair friendly. I am really sorry for not being able to assist in this matter.
