About
Pidurangala is a massive rock formation located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. It has an interesting history closely related to that of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climbing to the top of Pidurangala Rock is more strenuous than climbing Sigiriya. If you are fit and adventurous it is a climb worth making. It will take you about two hours. There is far less to see on this site than Sigiriya

This is definitely a rock that needs to be climbed if you want to get the best view of the Sigiriya rock!

We can highly recommend climbing the Pidurangala Rock after having climbed Lion's Rock. From the summit there's a phenomenal view of the area and Lion's Rock. The trail to the summit is relatively easy, but consider hiring a guide for the trip. If you do ask for Sunil who gave us a wonderful experience on the climb. Actually, climbing both rocks in Sigiriya should be mandatory :)

Me and my brother started with pidurangala, around 9am. It was a really easy but nice climb, especially the last part is really fun. We climbed the rock in 25 minutes. The view is breathtaking, even without a sunrise/sunset. It’s definitely worth it!!

Our driver encouraged us to do Pidurangula Rock for sunset instead of Sigirya and in my opinion it's the one bad recommendation he gave us. Yes it's 1/10th the price, but it's about 10 times more difficult. It was so hard that I actually gave up halfway!! For context I am not super fit, but I am in my early 30s and have never abandoned a climb up to any landmark before.
In 30+ degree temperatures and 95% humidity, it was punishing. I saw people struggling and actually crying! The steps are uneven, crumbling and frankly dangerous. The only picture my fiance wanted from the whole trip was from the top of this rock so he soldiered on, but at 6'3 even he really struggled getting up the rocks near the end. Tourists have to help push and pull each other up. The pictures he showed me from the top didn't even look that good anyway!

This hike is not for the faint hearted. The path from the temple at ground level up to the cave temple is rough with huge steps, crumbling step and a degraded path. Beyond the upper temple, you need to scale rocks following painted arrows. But the view is rewarding.

This is a must visit place if you are traveling to Sigiriya rock fortress. The entrance is through the temple. be mindful to remove your shoes and walk until you start hike. not a difficult hike. There is an ancient Buddha statue top of the hill. the view from top of the rock is stunning. you can also see the Sigiriya Rock from their. Best place to see sunset or sunrise.

Very early start but worth it for the views!
You need to have a certain level of fitness to get to the top, but we made it in time and day there watching the sun rise.
Still smiling and can't believe we did it.
Wonderful memories
