SCC is a unique place to meet dedicated artists making great pieces of art from nature`s creation. Buy or not you will not regret time spent.

This was our seventh trip to the stone Castle Cameo Factory in Roatan. Every visit we are more amazed. We went specifically to buy a piece that I saw 10 years ago and thankfully it was still there. It was a signature piece that I fell in love with and it is exquisite. The masters work is beyond anything we have seen elsewhere. We went on a See and Sea tour offered by Carnival Cruise lines and it gave us 30 minutes to shop which we definitely needed. We went over on time a little bit and the tour guide was gracious enough to wait because she knew we came to buy. We have been so many times we skipped the presentation in the beginning explaining how the cameos are made and how they harvest the shells, which is very interesting, but, we needed more time to shop. If you take a tour, make sure it offers enough time to allow you to look for that special piece that you would like to buy. One of the other tours only gives 10 minutes and that is definitely not enough time. Anyone who has an appreciation for fine jewelry would Love this Institution. It is wonderful to be able to purchase the pieces at the prices they offer. If they sold them in stores the prices would be unaffordable. We have not had the opportunity to meet Mr Tamarro yet, but, hopefully in the future. These cameos are far more beautiful than the ones made of Ivory because they can be shaded in a way to make them more dimensional. The staff at the shop are very friendly and helpful. If you purchase with cash they will work with you on discounts. They are very fair with their pricing. We purchased a bracelet, earrings, a necklace and the signature piece and we felt the pricing was very fair and reasonable. This is definitely a place that one should experience at least once in their life, but, once you've been, you will want to go back. We are always interested to see what is knew and different from the last visit.

If you have never been, this is a must-stop for exquisite hand-carved shells and jewelry (the Italian way!).

I highly recommend the Stone Castle Cameo Factory. What an amazing experience to see the master crafter at work and to learn about the creation of the cameo from a shell.
I had a hard time finding the Factory’s hours as I was a visitor on the island not with a cruise ship. It is open only when cruise ships are in port and close by 2 pm.

We took a taxi from the port to the Cameo Factory. We were the only one’s there & Im so glad. We took our time looking around the shop deciding on the perfect ones the sales ladies were helpful but not pushy. They had lots of pcs for under $50 us.

My bestie took us to the Stone Castle Cameo Factory, she went on and on about the store. I was really impressed. We got there right at closing, they had already put most of the cameos away, they pulled about 12 trays out and I watched the young lady making a dolphin cameo. Quite impressed, I love dolphins and turtles. The best of both worlds, they explained the process of making these beauties. I will definitely say, if you are looking for something unique, this is the place. I am so glad we stopped, I think it was my best shopping experience yet, I cannot wait till we go back. You can see the ship from the shop, it is a hike from the ship, totally worth it. Bring cash, more for the bang of the buck. Love love this place.

You will really enjoy the talk at the beginning, seated outside in the shade, where they explain the type of shell used in making the cameos and see large carved shells. This is one of the few places where they still teach the art of making cameos, and we were able to watch one person who was carving.
Browsing through the large collection of cameos is wonderful and varies from traditional cameos to cameo earrings, bracelets, and the large carvings.
This is a good place to buy yourself or a loved one a beautiful treasure.

Visited the Cameo Factory in Roatan and was totally happy with the tour of the facility. The artist is now teaching the locals the art of Cameo making like he had learned in Italy. Wotrh the trip and money spent.

This is the last stop on tour before heading back to cruise ship. (Ship is in view from this shop.) The best was saved for last. Absolutely superb artistic work is shown on the various pieces for purchase. You can watch the craft person at work too.

What hours is the Cameo Shop open?
Will a taxi driver take us to the shop from the Coxen Hole cruise port?
Linda O

Yes, but just about every taxi driver will want to take you on a tour... and we have had to agree to a price to take us just to the Cameo Factory. We have been there many times and really do not want to do the other stops.

I remember steps going out of the retail shop side of the building. Not sure on the entrance/info hall side. If no steps there, you could easily reverse course and exit that way. At worst, it's 2 or 3 steps. If going with family or on a guided tour, I'd hope it would be possible to be assisted up and down a couple of steps. There may be no steps out the back door to the restrooms, and there might be a path from there to the front parking area (this property is the size of a city residential lot, with the building around the size of an average home, maybe 2,000 feet on main floor). The building appeared to be on level ground, and with multiple workers who seemed friendly and would likely assist if needed.

Can I get to the the Stone Castle cameo factory on my own? Is a taxi the best way to get there? Can I take public transportation? Thank you

As I was on a coach excursion, I am not sure how far it was from the cruise terminal. I would think you could get a taxi, but I do not know if you would be 100% safe, or how far it would be. If you can book a tour or private guide, believe me it is well worth it. Italian people settled here years ago with these cameo skills. The most interesting part of this place is that the cameos do not only depict ladies heads. There are cameos with sea creatures (sea horses etc) and they are wonderful. Most of the cameos are set in silver. Hope this helps.

Could anyone tell me the days and hours of operation? Their email does not appear to be working.
Thanks

They are typically open when ships are in port. They are aware of the schedule and are open then. They may close 30 minutes prior. Some days there are several people working and other days only a couple. It depends on how many ships are in port.

I would like to know if Franco Tamaro is still at the Stone Castle Cameo Factory, i was there in 2013 and bought several cameos and corresponded with Franco for several months. He got very sick and all correspondence with him stopped. i was wondering if he is ok?
thank you, thomas prasil

I'm sorry but I didn't interact with him when I was there in July 2015 - doesn't mean that he's not around, but a lovely woman helped me when I was there.

Does one have to take a tour to get to Stone Castle? Or can we take a taxi? Thanks.

You don't have to take a tour - not sure how far it is from the port, but a taxi would still probably be cheaper than a tour (unless you wanted to see other places that a tour might go). In hindsight, there wasn't much on the tour that I couldn't have done without and would have been perfectly happy just going to the factory on my own. Not to mention that we had barely any time at all to shop - and I didn't even stay for the presentation (I had read a post where someone said they wish they skipped the presentation in favor of more shopping time, so that's what I did) - I just went straight in, grabbed a salesperson and went to work!

Hey there!
I'll be visiting Coxen Hole in two weeks and am wanting to bring home a souvenir from this factory. Could anyone help me out with how much I should expect to pay for a larger shell?
Thank you,

What is the pricing like at the cameo factory? I'm registered for the excursion that goes there in July and am hoping to purchase something memorable, but don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Can you give me an idea of the price range for, say, some of the smaller to medium size pendants? Thanks!

I think the smallest were ~$20. My mom got a ... I'd call it medium sized...there are certainly bigger ones. I can't remember for certain, I want to say it was $80-$100 range though. She looked at another that was maybe $40 more. I think my reviews have pictures of them side-by-side for reference, if that helps.

Hi, we just came back from a Carnival Cruise and visited the Stone Castle Cameo Factory in Roatan - fabulous! We purchased a couple cameos while we were there, but would like to purchase more now that we're back home. How can we go about that? Can we buy anything online? Larry
