We arrived in Roatan during a cruise with NCL just a few weeks ago and I'd like to share a few things with anyone considering venturing outside the locked gate that surrounds the cruise port. There are plenty of low-cost stores and kiosks. I was traveling solo and I found a great store way down at the end of the shops that had a sale of 50% off natural wood products and tons of inexpensive t-shirts and other goodies. I bought a few things there, then gathered all my strength of nerve and approached the gate to leave because I wanted to walk into the "city" of Coxen Hole. The closer I got to the gate, the more hands that were reach in to touch me and get my attention. Honestly, it looked like a scene from the Walking Dead! Once I got outside, it was even worse! ALL of them were crowding around me wanting to take me on a "tour" or just walk with me to point out "interesting" places. Believe me, there ARE no interesting places in Coxen Hole except one store that sold original crafts made by people who actually live and create in Roatan. I bought some beautiful coasters, the likes of which I've never seen anywhere else. If you're brave enough to walk to the city (about 15 minutes) you can get beers and sodas for $1.00 but the shopping there leave much to be desired. If you are the least bit leery of being approached by pushy strangers, including children, stay inside the gate. The Hondurans were extremely pushy, and I would not have gone if I hadn't done the walk around trip before. Stay inside the gate, and leave your jewelry in the safe on the ship. The time-frame I am giving is for strolling around the port, inside the gate. Most stores inside the port accent credit cards. There is some beautiful snorkel spots around the island, but think really hard before hiring a taxi to take you somewhere. Word of caution: If you ARE brave enough to take a taxi to the beach, be sure your driver agrees to wait for you while you are snorkeling and return you to the ship. Don't pay them until you are safely back on port property.

We docked here on the Royal Carribean. We noticed that not a lot of passengers departed the boat in the morning. The port is very small and almost half of the port is under construction. The island is small and has high hills of greenery.
As we departed the port area into the taxi areas, we were swarmed by tour guides or taxi drivers haggling us, asking where we were going. The vendors were pretty aggressive, waving me to come over to speak with them. I wanted to walk out into the town on my own so I can just see the locals. As we departed the port area, there are a group of 10 to 15 men standing at the exit, holding signs for excursions. I had a man follow me and told me that there is nothing to see outside of the port, I would need him to drive me into the Town where there are tourist things to do. As we were walking away, the man continued to follow and try to make conversation.
As we continued to walk and talk, I noticed another 2 males following this one guy. It felt like we were being guarded. This made my girlfriend really uncomfortable.
If you are docked here on a cruise, I would booked a taxi in advance and go as a big group. Being 2 persons did not feel safe being there. I would suggest hiring a taxi driver inside the port as they are cleared to be there. While the men outside of the gate may be cheaper, you cant guarantee your return trip to the port.

Had a great experience looking for jewelry in their store, with the help of Cindy Good who got us in the store, and Jessica Flowers who helped with finding different things to look at, and then the Manager, Luella Bodden, who helped us worked out the final details. We are very happy with our purchase and with the price we agreed on. We have purchased many pieces of jewelry over the many years we have traveled and always been satisfied with Diamond International

First time into this port. spent some free time here after returning from excursion. the Port is very small with only handful of stores. all for souvenirs, and restaurants. Make sure you bring your passport here, there's a small booth to stamp your passport here.

The little tourist village here is growing well. You can shop using American dollars and receive dollars back, not foreign money! Drinks are inexpensive, but food is expensive.
This is a busy port, but lots of places to rest. The shop keepers are not pushy and are super nice! Do not forget the fish who eat your dead skin off your feet!!!

We visited this port in March 2020 and loved it. Some tourist shops - a bit expensive but lovely items to buy. But the highlights were a nature walk with amazing views and a lovely beach with clear blue water and clean white sand right on the port. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Well worth a visit even if you don't go out on any excursions.

We are on a 7 day cruise on RCL and stopped over in Roatan, Honduras yesterday. We didn’t book a shore excursion as we like to travel independently so as not to wait on a group to leave a place and we like the freedom of going on our own. After reading the many negative reviews on trip advisor regarding how aggressive the locals are and how bad the poverty is we were hesitant to even get off the ship. I’m so glad we did because it ended up being a highlight of our trip. I don’t understand why so many reviewers said they felt uncomfortable and were hassled at the port. There is nothing worthwhile at the port and we did not find leaving the gates intimidating as many reviews mentioned. We immediately found a taxi, negotiated briefly, we decided on the fee of $80 for a private driver in an air conditioned taxi to remain with us as long as we wanted. We decided we would stay 3-4 hours. He only took $5 from us and we paid the following $75 + tip when we arrived back at port. Very reasonable. Well our driver (Franklin) was very kind and knowledgeable and he literally escorted us into every stop we made. He even suggested we go to the local supermarket to buy the incredible Honduran coffee beans that were double the price at the port. He met every need that we requested. He first took us to a place that is not offered on RCL shore excursions but it’s a must see for every traveler. It’s a place called Mayan Eden and it’s an extremely compassionate conservation of monkeys, local birds and butterflies. The workers love the work they do and they love the animals and take such good care of them that they release the majority of them in the jungle at evening and they all return to the cages in the morning because they are that well taken care of! There is a 9 part zip line we did and it was my first time and I was petrified. Our guides, Rafael and Franklin were so professional and helpful they took amazing photos and videos of us on our own phones and these images I will cherish forever. They didn’t try to charge us for photos. This whole day was only $45 per person + tip. There is no way we would have had a better experience on the advertised shore excursions that were double or triple the price. We had a wonderful day and I highly recommend getting off the ship walking straight thru the port and going straight to Mayan Eden. We also stopped at the Roatan chocolate factory and had an impressive tour. The proceeds go to the conservation of Jaquars in the rainforest where they grow the cocoa beans. Another must see. You won’t regret it!

So this port was actually pretty nice. There were several different restaurants that were reasonably priced and several shops that were honestly not too bad as far as port shopping goes. But, it’s a very small port. If you decide that you want to venture out of the gate of the port and walk around like we did, just make sure that you are prepared to be followed and harassed by random people outside the gates of the port. We wanted to explore the are around the port a little while we were there so we decided we would walk. What a mistake. As soon as you get within shouting distance from the gates, you are greeted by dozens of locals that start shouting at you asking if you need a taxi, or to buy this or come on their tour or what-have-you... then when we passed through the gate, a few of the locals continued to walk along side of us for close to a mile, the whole time asking us where we thought we were going and why we don’t have a taxi. We kept telling them to leave us alone but they were definitely persistent. Like I said, the one guy followed us for close to a mile down the road away from the port before he gave up, and it made us feel very uneasy, like we might get mugged. Once you get past that, however, the area is very different, we stopped at a small shop and the woman who ran it was very nice and helpful.
Overall I’m rating this port so low because of the locals that hang around the port and how they make you feel so uncomfortable. I would definitely recommend venturing out of the port, but definitely grab a cab from inside the port and don’t walk like we did. The experience probably would have been nicer had we done that in the first place

The area is beautiful. Unfortunately we were unable to go further than the port. They have tons of taxi drivers at this port. Unlike Mexico though these drivers all want the same amount of money. It was very unreasonable rate too. $120 dollars for 6 people. It was suppose to be round trip too but every time you got to the taxi the driver would want something else. I recommend if your ship is stopping at this port book a shore excursion. This place would be fun to explore, but make sure you plan ahead.

Hi, I'll visit Roatan next February in a NCL cruise. Is there a close beach were to stay with my family for the whole day?. Which is the better way to go and return?
Thanks a lot.

If you walk out of the cruise terminal there are plenty of taxi drives who will offer services. To the closest town center it is 10 USD unless you negotiate hard for 2 people. To the closest beach with a Bar it is the same .. Drinks and food are for sure cheaper than when staying in the terminal and using the beach there!

Do you pick up the chairlift to the beach right from where you dock, or do you have to travel to it?
Written 30 January 2019
chair lift is right at the port, it does cost to ride it or you can just walk 5 minutes to the same beach

This area has limited accommodations. Its a destination for cruise passenger traffic that are in port just for the day. I would suggest perhaps looking into Virgin Gorda or one of the other US Virgin Islands and try a trip there if your looking for change of area for this years vacation.
