The home is stunning and is located very near the center of Old Town. However, the site was recently listed for sale and may no longer be open to the public

There much better houses out there. Some are even free to get into, unlike this one. Hard pass on this one.

You can see the home when you walk by and there is a sign out front telling you the information, but it is a private home and was not open to go inside

Good to see Alexandria save any pieces of history of the area and the city for the next generation to learn and to appreciate. The house is located just half a block from main Washington St. and the area is very well kept. I just look around from the outside and immagine what it would be like a few hundred years ago. Alexandria Old Town is not big and with variety of historic places and landmarks within the city, visitors can wonder around from one landmark to another. Nice history lesson.

I attended a wedding here in the 1990's when it was available for tours and catered events...pre 1917 but there was no area to insert the year.
The building was well maintained, the period furnishings were in excellent condition. There were fireplaces but they were not in use.
The garden in the back of the home was well manicured, it was able to be used by the wedding party and guests.
The building provided a glimpse of what life was like in an expensive home of that era.

I only looked at this from the outside. It's a nice house and I enjoy the history of this building and the area. It seems like a great many important people spent a lot of time in this small town. The house is worth a lot. It doesn't take long.

My wife is from Alexandria when she was a child. She went to school nearby, and it's is fascinating when we sit at home and talk about her memories. Her stepmoms brother lived nearby and knows so much more about the history of the area. I must talk with him and get back to ya. Go...Visit You won't be disapointed.!

History is more fascinating than fiction. Robert E. Lee grew up next door to abolitionist Dr. Benjamin Hallowell who was Lee's mentor, tutor, and father figure -- in the absence of a real father. Lee got his anti-slavery views from Dr. Hallowell, and Dr. Hallowell also prepared Lee academically for his entry into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Lee married a wealthy daughter of George Washington's adopted son, even though the Lees were of meager means themselves. History really is more interesting than Hollywood. You can learn facts like this from the history guides at "Alexandria's Footsteps to the Past" -- the most scholarly history tour company in the D.C. region.

This used to be a worthwhile visit, and it is still of historic interest, but as it is a private home now you can only glimpse the exterior. The private sale created an uproar at the time, many years ago, but not enough money could be raised to save it as a museum for the public.

Cant view since it is a private home. Better to visit his birthplace or go to Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC
