Stayed at the Hump, a foreigner friendly hostels just above the square. Daytime, the place is so so , feels poor. Even fake. But nighttime, once the lightnings are on, looks fabulous I recommend sitting on the Hump terrace and enjoying the historical site

This historical site is at the center of Kunming city. Busy traffic and not easy to get closer for a better look. We made passing by twice for a better glance from the bus of the archways and photo shots from a distance across the road before proceeding our journey to the airport. …

Better to visit at night as the 2 arches were beautifully lit up and shining like gold. The square was packed with people. The surrounding shops were selling same trinkets and junk food. Just beside the square is a shop with an unique name "F-House", not sure what its Chinese name was. Across the busy road were shopping complexes. Watch out for those quiet electric bikes with no headlights zooming everywhere at road juctions. Frankly the square had nothing of historic significance. Locals and travellers, besides mingling with the crowds, could probably get whatever they need here, from trinkets to souvenirs, finger food to alcoholic drinks and daily necessities. …

Europeans will be disappointed. Nothing is historic there. Another newly created "old town". A lot of shops they sell the same. Food is very bad there. it´s just another moneymaking theme park. You want to see some old buildings go to the old bird and flower market if you lucky they didn´t rip away the last few buildings. better go to Dali or Jianshui the old towns still there.…
