Stayed overnight at Red land at Kunming Jindong Hotel in Hongtudi Village near Huashitou Village in the heart of the redlands. Hotel arranged a car and driver from mid afternoon till sunset and an hour before sunrise till mod morning for RMB 260. Visited 8 different locations with fantasic views - some good in morning some in afternoon. Beautiful landscape. Limited number of direct public busses from Kunming otherwise need to travel via Dongchuan Town.…

If you are looking for 5-star hotels and experience, don't bother going there yet. The best you could find is probably 2-star's. Dirt roads, farms and beautiful scenery are what you will find there. However, construction is underway; I am sure it will be a high touristy spot with 5-star amenities in about 5 years. If you don't mind skipping seeing the sunrise, you can do it in 1 day with your own private car and driver. It's about 3 hours each way from Kunming. Don't pay more than 700 CNY for the car and driver. …

Dongchuan Red Land is a place of beautiful and colorful terraces. We have a rental car with a driver cum guide to bring us there. We saw many colorful terraces as we were driven to see Shuipingzi Rice Terrance (the Moon Rice), sunset at Luoxiagou in Songmaopeng, then to Huagou Thousand years of Nagarjuna—Red Soil Grand Sight. Sunrise next day at Damakan was marred by foggy morning weather. Later in the morning, we saw Qicai Slope (colorful slope), Jinxiuyuan, and Yuepuao—Luoshi Bay. We hired a driver and took a day trip from Kunming. The scenery is spectacular and depending on the season that you are visiting you will see different colours. However bear in mind that you are visiting a village so manage your expectations with regard to sanitary conditions. Bring along a hat and sunglasses as the UV rays are quite strong. …
