We walked through this very well-planned garden a few times during our stay both at night and daytime. Meandering paths led to quiet sitting areas overlooking the lake. Used often by the locals. Our hotel was across the road. It also provided a cool area to walk under the trees

Our hotel was right in the middle of the gardens. It's peaceful. Yet busy. Locals appear to love these gardens. They were busy morning, noon and night. Take a walk around the gardens at different times for changing perspectives. The lotus blossoms were in bloom during our visit. There's a pond full of them. Gorgeous! Be prepared to make some local friends ... try some of the activities going on as you walk around. Tai chi, dancing in the street, games, take a book and find a place to read, watch the men write calligraphy on the stone walkway with a water brush. Stop and talk with the locals. I was delighted to find that some of the folks we played a Chinese tops game with were hearing impaired ... my dated sign language skills helped me communicate with them far better than my lack of spoken Chinese! Be open to the unexpected in these charming gardens.

We were staying in the hotel located in the botanical gardens so could easily explore them. They are peaceful and pretty but don’t expect anything like Kew Gardens in London! It’s quite a small scale affair.

Perhaps it is simply because I visited in the Winter, and all of the bushes were covered with plastic, but as best I could tell, even if the bushes were uncovered, they would still just be bushes.
The botanical garden is a very small loop, the only things featured along the way are cheap plastic toys and noisy rides for kids. From there, all the signs along the path point you towards the "palace," -- the most beautiful and well-kept place in the gardens -- it's an expensive hotel. Again, all that time, all those signs, pointing me to the highlight of the gardens: a place to spend more money. I felt scammed, as per usual.
There were some nice little ponds that would have been enjoyable to relax near, if it weren't for them pumping horrible scratchy New Age music through cheap speakers at every potential respite. Calm natural sound of running water is not good enough!
There are no maps anywhere of the garden, nor does the pamphlet they give you with the expensive ticket come with any hint of what to see or where to find anything. Infuriatingly, the stone walking paths often ended at barred gates, locks and more locks, gates on locks on fences. There was a beautiful wooden bridge, but it was similarly locked and unused. It boggles the mind. ..
FWI: If you go behind the big Palace hotel, there, and walk down the dirt side road, you can take a little bridge the locals use and get in for free... I saw some Chinese people bringing their baby in for a stroll via this secret entrance.

Located centrally in Guilin, the Botanical gardens are a must for all visitors. Walk around the extensive lake side area and view the Elephant Bridge rock formation. Easy walks for those with limited ability, or for the fit a mountain steps climb to the summit.
Fabulous views of the lake and river areas right out to the mountains one end and city the other.
Good value entry fee and do try the fried fish eating whilst on chairs in the water. It's fun and the fish is great.

We stayed at the Hotel in the middle of the park Royal Palace Hotel and if you enjoy walking or running this is your place. No cars are allowed and a lot of room to run or walk. Nice green trees everywhere.
