Sam Britton was our guide (arranged by Tamandua) for a 6-hour birding tour of the Pipeline and he was excellent. On February 25, he was at the hotel before we came downstairs. He had brought a few bananas in case we didn't get breakfast. The places that he took us and his expertise in finding birds and then spotting them with his scope was amazing. We saw 73 bird species, 3 mammals, a snake, an iguana and a fresh water eel being eaten by a Fasciated Tiger Heron. We also watched as a Yellow Tiger Snake tried to get to eggs inside a nest in a dead tree. (Sam knew the nest was there and it's history.) We saw two different pairs of birds beat that snake off the limb and fall at least 30 feet. WOW! Sam even brought us a very nice lunch so we had more time outside. At the end of the trip, he sat with us as we made our list of birds and animals that we had seen. The next day he sent pictures of those birds as well. It was clear Sam has a passion for nature and he loved sharing it.

We had a fabulous experience. We would heartily recommend him to any organization and other birders.

We met the photographer-birder-owner, Ito and his wife at the Hummingbird garden where they have a very nice and cute cafe serving really good coffee and snacks. We spent some time at the garden photographing the hummingbirds. The place has flowers and feeders strategically suited for taking photos of the birds in great lighting.

After that we walked across the street to their other location where they have very cute cabins that they rent out. Just outside the cabins, there are feeders for the birds. So, you wake up and have immediate access to the birds. Both these places were well visited by the Violet Sabrewing, White throated mountain gem, Green crowned brilliant, Scintillant hummingbird, etc.

We signed up for a day trip for the following day including lunch at their "top of the mountain" cloud forest reserve which they own and run next to the La Amistad National Park (which is a park shared between Panama and Costa Rica). They have beautiful cabins and homes there where one can rent along with food.

They picked us up on from their location in Guadalupe town at 6AM on their powerful specially equipped 4x4 that can clamber up the narrow boulder filled path. It took about 20 minutes up this beautiful road surrounded by spectacularly dense cloud forest crossing streams a few times and then you arrive at their gated property that has the two buildings. They have a hide as well as a very large concrete platform with shade from rain and sun to watch the hummingbirds and other birds feed. They have large grape clusters and bananas, hung cleverly for the birds to sit and eat besides the hummingbird feeders. And the space is surrounded by dense forest with trees, plants and flowers for the birds to perch. All in all, a spectacular setup that Ito and his family take great pains to maintain. It gets cold and wet at this altitude in the cloud forest and so come prepared with a light jacket and raincoat. Good boots are recommended as well when you walk on one of the many trails in the property looking for shy birds like the Wrenthrush or Tapaculo.

We spent the first hour or so in the hide where they have a lighted white sheet (lit up the previous night) to attract the insects so that next morning it encourages the insect eating birds to come for their breakfast. And many did!

Next we spent couple of hours on the platform photographing the hummingbirds and other birds like the Barbets, Mountain thrush, Brushfinches, etc.

After this, we hiked to a nearby clearing from where we saw the spectacular three wattled bellbirds, albeit at a distance.

Then, we took another walk and saw the elusive and spectacular Wrenthrush and saw the elusive Silver fronted Tapaculo.

After this, we were served a very nice traditional lunch we enjoyed very much. And while we were having lunch, a Black-billed Nightingale-Thrush decides to walk by and we scrambled for our cameras.

After lunch we did some more birding and then we were driven downhill to a spot where we saw the colorful Long-tailed Silky Flycatcher and the bright and curious Flame-throated Warblers. And then we were dropped back to the Hummingbird garden where we started from in the morning.

An amazing day of birding and sights thanks to Ito and the team at Tamandua Birding Tours. Highly recommend this place!

I want to thank our guide, Jose Perez for recommending this place and bringing us to Cerro Punta from Panama City.

My birding partner Bruce and I have just returned from a birding/photography trip with Tamandua. The organization was fantastic, flexible and flawless. Everyday our travel, local guides, food and accommodation were organized. Nothing was too much trouble if we wanted to modify our day. Ito and Karina are really great people, and try to make sure that your trip is a success in every way. This is far better than going with seven or eight other people with the big companies.
highly recommended.

I had a tough time to find a bird guide a week before my trip to Panama. Luckily, Mr "Kilo" Campos from Tamandua had half a day free and was willing to go birding with me on Pipeline Road. He is definitely one of the best birding guides in Panam, knowing all the birds by song, and great at getting me close to the birds. I couldn't be happier with my time spent at Pipeline Road, and with Kilo.

Owners Ito and Katrina are GREAT!! We saw over 60 species in 4 hours. Ito is an expert on birds and their calls. He was informative, funny, and great to spend time with. If you have time, be sure to check out their cafe in Guadalupe. Great coffee and pastries. Tamandua uses very nice and comfortable vehicles and they are fully equipped with scopes, etc. I highly recommend Tamandua!

I’ve been fortunate to travel to many beautiful places in the world, and the cloud forests of the Chiriquí Highlands in Panama definitely are among the most breathtaking. My husband and I were on a 5 day birding tour with Tamandua Nature Tours. Our guide, Ito Santamaria, was able to take us to remote locations in his 4 wheel drive Toyota truck that provided us with sightings of dozens of tropical birds, including twice of the elusive Quetzal and many other species too numerous to name. Ito’s sharp knowledge and keen eyes were invaluable, but equally important is that he is a thoroughly likable and enjoyable person to be with. His family has also created a delightful hummingbird garden which allowed us access to birds at close range. I highly recommend Tamandua Nature Tours – they can customize a trip for you that you will treasure and never forget!

Just recently Tamandua opened up their café in Guadalupe, Cerró Punta in Chiriqui. We went there after a rainforest hike and immediately felt welcomed and cared for. The café staff prepared an exquisite cup of coffee (café del día) and a ham and cheese panini made with artisanal local bread. My wife and I had three cups of coffee, the panini and total damage was $5 US. I love that they are not exploiting tourists in charging exorbitant prices. We much prefer coming to them for our coffee and snack rather than a “Fonda” and their prices make that possible. We are local and love to take our two dogs for long hikes beyond the Guadalupe hills ana it’s nice to know we now have a quaint local establishment we can frequent and watch grow. Congratulations Tamandua Nature & Photo on your new Guadalupe café!

We spent 2 days with Ito finding birds on our target list. And wow! We found them and many more. His birding skills are fantastic, and he's very professional and simply pleasant to be around. If you are a beginner or a seasoned birder with a target list to fill, Ito can accommodate you. When we come back to Panama, his company is the first one we will reach out to. We regret not finding him sooner in our birding travels through Panama.
