- Chow ESingapore, Singapore251 contributionsLocal KK Morning MarketThere were many stalls selling items from clothes, perfumes, food, coffee and ''Live'' animals being kept in tiny cramped cages. This market is obviously for tourists as the prices are priced higher than usual. A good place for scrolling around, but suggest not to buy things from here, as its quite expensive.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 December 2023

This market opens for visitors starting from 6 AM until 12 PM every Sunday. You can find local foods, souvenirs, pets, plants, flowers, shirts, coffee, shoes. I visited Gaya Street Sunday Market in Kota Kinabalu city center in the middle of January 2022. Overall the place is clean and not too crowded due to Covid-19 restriction. You can walk for about 700 meters along the market. To enter you must scan body temperature and most already complete 2 dose of vaccine. Will come back for sure.

Great variety of products. From souvenirs to insect repellants. Not a lot of food choices as those are showcased on the Night Market happening every night on the same street. The prices are relatively cheap and a lot of locals patronize it. If you happen to be in KK on a Sunday morning do drop by the market.

I only read about the professional pick pockets in Gaya St Market after I had the unfortunate experience on Sunday 2nd October 2022...I wish I'd checked the site before hand , but I would not have expected this in Sabah.....BUT PLEASE BE AWARE.
I did not bother reporting as nothing would be done. I'd just bought a fresh coconut drink at the stall and placed my wallet into my bag and within 2 meters I was bumped into by 2 local looking women who must have grab my wallet. I had ringgit and no cards in the wallet and only discovered the loss when I went to leave money for the singer/guitarist by the fountain. The Market people need to place a sign stating that pickpockets are active in this Market. Will not visit this Market again and unfortunately will be suspicious when visiting any markets in future in Malaysia.

Well laid out market with lots of different stalls. Did not like the animals in cages as they were very cramped from rabbits to dogs. Market closes around 1pm so need to be there in the morning. Preferred to buy items from local shops as cheaper and without having to do all the haggle of trying to get price down to shop level.

Visited during Raya 2019. This was my 3rd visit after a few years. It has improved in the variety of stalls but still mostly selling the same touristy stuff. Good place for getting souvenirs as you can bargain. Tried the infamous blended watermelon juice and it was really refreshing especially in the hot weather. Great place to stroll would definitely recommend to others.

hi ill be arriving by cruise ship but not till 12noon so is the market still open ?? or where could i shop ??

The stalls should be gradually closed and removed for the tent after 1:00 pm.
If you want to look for some handcraft products, you can still find in Filipino handcraft market. It is just next to the Central Market. By using the footbridge behind Horizon Hotel, you can walk through from Gaya Street to Central Market. Or, it is also a good choice for taking a relax walk from Marlin Statue to Filipino Handcraft Market. Just a reminder that the passage between the stalls in Filipino handcraft market is bit narrow, but with the cover. So, no worry for the rainy day.

I am a 59 year old woman would it be safe for me to go to the Sunday Market on my own as well as the Filipino market during the day as well as night.

The Gaya Street Market is only open in the mornings...as early at 6 am and wrap up is usually around noon or just past about 12:30 pm (as it gets too hot). It is totally safe to walk on your own.
The Handicraft Market (aka Philipino Market) - totally safe to walk around on your own during the day. During dinnertime, there are lots of people around and it's very busy - but do be more alert. I wouldn't recommend going on your own at night.
Just like home, take the usual precautions - avoid dark areas during the day or night, don't flash your bag/cash unnecessarily...same rules apply when you are on holiday or at home.

walking around on my own would it be safe i am a 68 year old
Written 13 April 2016
Hi junepopplewell,
If you are generally healthy and have no problem walking, you are good to go. I saw some older people walking in this area and they were fine. You can actually get yourself out of this place anytime and anypoint you want. It is a straight long market with plenty of rest area/cafe as well as exits leading to all direction in kk. People wouldnt mind you taking time to walk. I suggest you go a bit early, say 8am..so it wont be too hot for you. If u feel tired, stop and rest, sit in a cafe or somewhere, and continue. If u think you ve seen enough, go back to your hotel. It will be best if you stay in a nearby hotel. Cheers.
