About
A visit to the magnificent Boldt Castle offers a glimpse into one of the most compelling love stories in history. At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world-famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, set out to build a full-sized Rhineland Castle in Alexandria Bay, on Heart Island. The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise. Beginning in 1900, Boldt's family shared four summers on Wellesley Island while 300 workers, stonemasons, carpenters and artists fashioned the six story, 120-room castle, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge and a dovecote. In 1904, tragedy struck. Boldt telegrammed the island and commanded the workers to immediately "stop all construction." Louise had died suddenly. A broken-hearted Boldt could not imagine his dream castle without his beloved. Three hundred workers laid down their tools. Boldt never returned, leaving behind the structure as a monument of his love.

Gorgeous place. Chose your ride carefully.

Choose your transportation carefully. If you are checking off a box on the bucket list then you can do this as part of a tour from Clayton. I had time to explore the grounds and whip through the mansion.
I wish I had more time just to chill in this remarkable place. If you think you may want to chill as well, go with the boats in Alexandria Bay.
I didn't have the time to explore inside so no guided tour was good for me. With the app you can get all you need. Sorry if that's not your thing. There were plenty of assistants around that can offer some further information.
The architecture and grounds are amazing.
Another thing of note. I think the snack bar had decent prices. But don't eat inside. Go sit on these beautiful grounds. There are plenty of picnic tables. Also I was there on a 70 degree sunny day in October, that might also cut down on the other guests.

Castle disappointing
Oct 2021 • Couples
Looks beautiful from the water but disappointed with Castle interior. Only a few rooms have been restored. Grounds are beautiful and flowers and gardens are gorgeous.

Boldt Castle visit
Sep 2021
Loved the visit.
It was a cold and windy day in late September 2021 when we visited.
The grounds are nice. The location is amazing and the "castle" itself is an education on what one can do when you tell the architect that money is no consideration. Even the servant's quarters were designed and built beautifully.
Sad that the family never lived here

Tourist Destination in need of a Guided Tour
Aug 2021
We were looking forward to visiting Boldt Island after seeing it featured on a travel show. Its history as a gift from hotelier George Boldt of Waldorf-Astoria fame to his wife was intriguing, as well as the fortune he invested building it.

Transportation and admission to the property was through the boat tour we took with Clayton Island Tours. We arrived dockside along with other boat tour companies and found the island and home overrun with tourists. Inside the house, people were running up and down the stairs and from room to room with little thought or attention to what they were seeing. There was no guided tour although you could download an app for a narration or read descriptive placards at the room entrances.

Although staffing and volunteer shortages everywhere are understandable in the current Covid environment, the lack of a structured guided tour did a tremendous injustice to this property. The gardens are extraordinary and much of the house has been beautifully restored but this gets lost in the chaos of the tourist crush.

Massive Ambition Meets Tragedy
Aug 2021
We stopped at Boldt Castle on the return trip from Singer Castle on an Uncle Sam Boat tour and the history and construction of the site is a fascinating look into turn of the century wealth, darkened by tragedy. The site is in various states of renovation and disrepair, never having been finished originally, and subsequently abandoned for decades. Work is being done to bring the site back, but it is already something really special. The huge rooms, landscaping and outbuildings reflect massive ambition with money behind it. The upper unfinished floors, covered in decades of graffiti all the way to the rafters reflect the grinding halt to construction here. The location has restrooms and a gift shop in the house, with a snack bar down by the dock.

We also took the little ferry boat over to the boathouse and saw the yachts and the quarters on the other side of the river. That was interesting enough, but probably not worth the trip and waiting for the boat each way. If I did it again, I'd enjoy the castle and then spend more time in Alexandria Bay.

Well worth the visit
Aug 2021
Hard to say much that hasn't been said by other reviewers. Definitely a must-see location when in the area (and well worth a longer trip to see it). It is a beautiful castle and the restoration is nearly complete. The location is also great and it is such a nice boat ride to go out to the castle.

Our only issue was the lack of organized tours. It is nice that you can wander through different parts of the castle at your own pace, and for most areas that was fine. (Being able to see the unfinished parts on the top floor was very interesting and not something similar places often expose). However, in the castle itself and the restored rooms, it was just a bit chaotic and not as much to our liking.

We bought the extra ticket for the Yacht House - we could have passed on that.

Castle is in great shape compared to years ago.
The restoration is fantastic. You can download an app. that gives you info at certain points around the grounds.

Amazing
Jul 2021
The last time I was here was 20 years ago and it was amazing to see what has been done to the castle since. It's so well maintained and very neat to see the majority of the rooms now completed. Well worth a trip to see this place.

MUST DO!
Aug 2021
Awesome, I really can't think of anything else to say. So much to see, the grounds, the different buildings, It's a must do! If we had more time in August, it would have been spent in this area.

Spend an hour or a day
Jul 2021
The $11 entrance fee allowed us to explore not only the castle (on our own) but also the grounds and other buildings. Reconstruction is still underway, but it is already beautiful. (Nice restrooms!) I can't decide if the dining room or the kitchen was my favorite room. The grounds are well-maintained and pleasant for strolling or just sitting and people watching after exploring the castle.
