About
VaranasiWalks is the oldest experience oriented eco-friendly walking tour and boat journey collective in Varanasi. Since 2008 our Explorers have given an intimate look at the holy city of Varanasi and are able to show you places in the city that the average tourist could never find. Our walks cater to those who want to see the layered interiors of the city and avoid the static silk shopping game. The boatrides include short walks and detailed history along with immersed experiences! As a collective of residents of the city we are flexible and open to working with you to create a experience you will never forget. VaranasiWalks was started by Jai while he was running a successful Hindu Studies & Hindi Language university program and working in the Social Service sector. Jai has been giving walks in Varanasi since 2004.

We loved the “Pilgrims Riverside” walking tour we did with our guide Rajan. We learned so much about Varanasi that we would never have figured out on our own walking the same path. It really enhanced our sightseeing experience to have a knowledgeable local tell us about the various sights, point out elements we hadn’t noticed, and provide insightful responses to any questions we had about things we were seeing real-time. Rajan had perfect English, was kind and patient, and even treated us to chai midway through our tour. I highly recommend this as a way to spend a few hours of your time in Varanasi!

We took two tours with Varanasi Walks: "Weavers and Artisans" and "Northern Bazaars and Alleyways". Both were excellent. Our guide was a lifelong Varanasi resident who clearly loves his city and, as he says, is always looking for new things to discover and show people. He spoke excellent English, gave clear explanations and was very patient with our questions. He showed us many areas we would never have found by ourselves or on a larger tour, including hidden temples and artisans of all types in their one room workshops. He also recommended restaurants that indeed were very good!

Varanasi is a fascinating city. To get a deeper understanding of the religious life that makes this city special, I highly recommend booking a walk with Varanasi Walks. We were lucky to have Jeremy as our guide. He started the company and, as an American who has lived in Varanasi for many years, he was able to provide many insights into Hindi customs and rituals that he knew we would not be familiar with. He knows people all over the city and is clearly respected by the locals. We viewed the burial sites but also the back alleys, an ashram, and various temples, many places that we would never have ventured into on our own.

Varanasi has a reputation for being intimidating to travelers not familiar with travel in India. With that in mind and wanting to make the most of our three days there I decided to take some of the uncertainty out of the visit to the city by booking some guided walks and boat tours. Using Varanasi Walks proved to be exactly what was needed. The have quite a few tours to choose from, from the basics, sundown Ganges cruise and early morning Ganges boat ride to more specific and interesting walks. Our guide Anand Agarwal was the biggest reason the tours where do we’ll planned, informative and successful. He is a native of the city with a vast knowledge of it’s hidden places and interesting but overlooked sites while also being very informative about the basics. Using Veranasi Walks and Anand really gave us an opportunity to experience Varanasi that we otherwise would have missed.

Authentic, relaxed and very informative. We booked several tours, including visiting Sarnath. We gained different perspectives on religions and life in and around Varanassi. Anand was socially adept, flexible and humorous so we felt we had a genuine conversation over several days and learnt lots. We enjoyed being away from large tour groups and gained a personal perspective from someone who is knowledgeable and passionate. We felt the guiding was respectful and unobtrusive and that we experienced life in a way we wouldn’t have achieved on our own. Communication prior to meeting up was excellent and Anand was punctual. Thank you for making our stay a unique experience. We would highly recommend using these services.

We had such a great experience with Laotse during our stay in Varanasi that we have kept adding additional tours with him to keep on discovering more about the city, the traditions, the holy river and city and how people live or come as Pilgrims or Tourists in Varanasi.
The tours were all amazing and meeting Laotse has been one of the highlights of our trip in India

This walking tour was one of my best experiences in India. I highly recommend starting with this in Varanasi to get oriented and also to see things you likely would never discover. Laotse was the best -- I'm so grateful for his attitude, knowledge, and graciousness.

Jai (Varanasi Walks) took me on a tour exploring the alleys of the northern part of Varanasi and this was a great experience. Jai’s a bottomless well of information, of fun facts, and of great stories! Especially the latter part, make sure to push him to share these stories. The route never felt forced or rushed, there’s time for a tea and joke along the way, and it’s fun to experience the city that’s been Jai’s hometown for so long. Turn any corner and there’s somebody who knows him, somebody who wants a little chat. I can only recommend Varanasi Walks highly, it was a highlight of my trip.

So glad it was a highlight of your trip! I really enjoyed walking around with you and apologise it has taken me so long to get around to responding to the reviews. I also had a great time with you and hope to see you again in Varanasi for more tours.

We had some tours during our stay in Varanasi, with Jai, Pappu and Laotse (sunrise and sunset ceremony and boat, yoga in the temple and walk, Northern alleys and divine goddesses). All of them were great experiences, all the guides from Varanasi Walks have a deep knowledge of the city and its less touristic spots. They are kind, passionate and very open to ask all our questions and request, and they gave us a lot of useful tips. We had a great time with them and we couldn’t recommend their walks more!

You must book with this organisation when you come to Varanasi. Booking and finding the starting point was very straightforward and Pappu was absolutely brilliant. On my first afternoon he showed me around the south of the Old Town, including loads of places I'd never have found and lots of very interesting and entertaining information about the history, culture, religion and practical tips too. It was so stress-free and enjoyable that I then arranged at the last minute to have a further walk with Pappu around the north of the Old Town today, which was also brilliant. Pappu adapted the tour to my needs and interests (popping by my hotel to get mosquito repellant, calling by excellent chai, lassi and street food places just when it was needed etc.) and helpfully negotiated a couple of cycle rickshaws to get me where I needed to be. It was like spending both days with an old friend - thank you very much :-)
