OVERALL ASSESSMENT
The walk up Wutong Mountain was very nice. There are two different ways (more on that later) so you can even choose depending on what you like. There weren't too many people around when we went but it was also very cold. Unfortunately, you probably need a lot of luck to choose a day with an actual great view. Still, you can see a lot and the height alone is incredible.

WAY THERE
Some people on here wrote about the bus line 211. We asked a Chinese friend who looked it up for us and said the fastest and best way is the following:
Go to Huangbeiling Metro Station (by metro). Then go out through - I'm not 100% sure anymore - Exit C and go to bus station 1 (黄贝岭地铁站①站).
There, you take bus M445 with the final destination Huangpeiling Station (黄排岭方向). As far as we saw, you can't take the wrong one, though, because Huangbeiling is the first/last station.
To have an overview over the stations: picture 1 (I looked it up while we were on the bus so I think the first stations are missing but you will recognize station names in the announcements). The station where you need to get out is called Wutong Mountain Market Station/WuTong Shan ShiChang (梧桐山市场站). Probably, many others will get out there, too.
To reach the entrance to the park, just go straight for a few hundred meters or simply follow all the others.

DETAILS ABOUT THE TRIP
- The small town at the entrance of the park is full of impressions but still much more quite than Shenzhen. You can get literally almost everything there (food, drinks, hiking and sports clothes, umbrellas etc.), there are at least two pretty big supermarkets.
- The park is free.
- We walked at a normal and consistent speed and it took us about 3 hours to get to the top (not counting our breaks). The way down the stairs took us about 2 hours.
- There are two ways: the asphalted road and a stairway (pretty much only stairs). We started out taking the stairs (go in to the left directly in the beginning) but didn't recognize the "Taishan Stream" path as the continuation of that way (picture 2). That's why we ended up taking the road. It's nice because you have a better view around and about two thirds up are two restaurants. The first one is next to a temple tower and mainly sells snacks, the one a few hundred meters later is much bigger. We took the stairs when walking back down and that way is very nice, it's pretty green and natural and follows a stream. I would recommend you to take one way up and the other down. We were happy the way we did it because taking the stairs up is much harder.

The walk was challenging but the most challenging aspect was getting there. Having GPS and Google (Inc. translate and maps) blocked on our phones meant finding a travel route to Wutong Shan Village was difficult.

There is no MTR station nearby so I recommend you catch the 211 bus from (near!!) Luohu MTR. To get to the bus stop you need to cross the road via the underpass and follow the road left past the Shangri-La hotel and then walk for 5 minutes.

The bus timetables are not in English (which is surprising because when on the bus, everything is in English and Chinese including the voice over). You need to be on the right hand side of the road with the buses going in the direction away from Luohu station. The bus costs just ¥2 which is the UK equivalent of just 22p and you need to get off the last stop which is Wutong Shan Village.

Follow the road and you will come to the path entrance.

The walk itself is challenging and took me and my boyfriend 1hr 30 but we did not stop and were walking at pace. Unfortunately it was a cloudy day but the views were still breathtaking.

There is a shop at the top and we bought 2 x icelollies and 2 x water totalling just ¥18 (£2). I would recommend you take plenty of water as we did this walk during the week and nobody was selling water after the first third of the walk (until the top) but this may not be the case at a weekend.

The walk down took 1hr and you get the bus back from the same place.

My husband and I decided to spend our Valentine's Day hiking Wutong. The park itself is pretty well maintained despite people's obvious disregard to throwing rubbish in the plethora or bins provided. There are two ways to get to the top. You can walk up the road within the park which, after about 4 miles leads to the Wutong Visitors pagoda and some steep steps up to the top. The other much more challenging option is to just take the steps from the beginning. It's about a 3,000 foot climb in about 2.6 miles, and of course my husband and I took this path. It's what we call, "The Path of Champions." There are multiple places to rest, catch your breath, eat a snack and then continue your brutal climb. There were even some very sporty looking people getting their a$$ handed to them on this climb.
After what seems like a bajillion steps you finally reach the summit. The views are quite amazing. You can see all of Shenzhen and even into Hong Kong. It was worth the sweat, a few tears and the obscenities that came out of my mouth on the way up.
To go down, you can choose either path. We chose to go down the way towards the road so as to avoid trying to scale steep steps and rocks. However, the road pathway is MUCH longer and after 4 plus hours of climbing stairs the 4 mile descent took FOREVER. There are little vendors along the way selling water and snacks, but we brought our own packs with water and food to snack on along the way.
All in all, I would definitely do it again. A fantastic work out. The path was beautiful and the feeling of pride at the end for finally getting to the top was invigorating.
CONS: Rubbish in many places other than the rubbish bin (sometimes surrounding the actual bin itself, but not actually INSIDE the bin which is weird). People blaring their Chinese hiking music which us quite annoying if you enjoy the sounds of nature. There was a band playing horrendous Chinese ballads at the summit. I almost gave them 100¥ just so they would stop playing for 10 minutes so I could soak up the beauty around me without their droning on in the background. For some reason many people were shouting, whooping and hollering along the path. It was weird, and again, quite annoying if you like to hear the sounds of the wind in trees, the water cascading down the rocks or the birds singing their daytime songs. I guess it's a cultural thing to want to hear everything else but nature itself.

Shenzhen is a great city of 15 millions inhabitants, but it is surrounded by mountains and the Wutong Mountain where you can have a trek is the highest one.
It difficult to do it, I did it by another starting point than the normal one and was very tired, but it is a cool experience.
I am sharing this trek on my website if you want more info: http://sophieadventures.com/2014/11/11/difficult-trek-on-the-highest-mountain-of-shenzhen-the-wutong-mountain/

Thanks,

Living in HK as an expat can be boring during Chinese new year. So I decided to take a solo day trip to shenzhen. With the original plan of munching on some good food in China, I decided to do the opposite, burn the cny food cals! Not knowing too much about wutong besides from reading the directions to getting there, I just took my passport and left HK at 11. Because I went during cny, the border was packed (except for foreigners). I crossed the border and arrived at luohu station at 12ish not knowing where the bus is aside from the route number 211. With some luck and guidance from locals, I managed to find the bus place within 30 min (success)! Get off at the very last stop, most people are there to hike so just follow the crowd when you get off. There's a giant stone carving midway to the actual gatee, DO NOT go up.

Once you arrive at the gate, read the map as it's very important which trail you take to get to the peak. There are two ways to get to the top of the big wutong, one following alongside winding road and the other up a creek. If you're not in gear or lack hiking experience, I suggest going the slower but much easier road. That's the one I took as I made a wrong turn trying to go up the creek (TG). The winding road has a gradual climb for about 10km to a pavilion. Along the road, there are lots of observstion points. I went on a cloudy day so the views were average compared to other hikes. Once you get to the pavilion, there is a small snack shop, get yourself a bowl of instant noodles for 2 CAD and enjoy it on the top of the tower (you will be famous in China as everyone loves to take pics at that spot.)

That's not the end of the hike, just a big resting point for the actual leg workout. Follow the sign that says hero path. Usually names are randomly given, but not this case. It really was a direct definition. The first set of stairs is about 200 meter up in elevation and once you get to the top, you think you reached the peak until you finally have a chance to look away from each individual stairs. Without spoiling the last bit, just know that it's never the end until it says the end.

Because of my lack of plannin, I also didn't check the forecast. cloudy with a high chance of rain. It's probably the best possible view in my opinion. If when you were a child and airplanes existed, then you definitely had a fantasy of touching the clouds you see when you wonder down from a window seat. Well that fantasy was delivered this hike. When you're on top of the 950m mountain on a cloudy day, you see nothing but clouds and you're above the first layer of it. If you go on a sunny day, I'm sure it'll be great too.

On the way down, I took the creek side, and although it's only 2km, it's actually 20 years on your knees because of the stairs. Overall, the way up took about 2 and half hours and coming down took 1 and half until I got lost at the bottom of it. This was probably the most complete hike ive done, including the Alberta side of the Rockies, so I would recommend it to anyone who has 6 hours to spare on a weekend in shenzhen.

My visit to the Wutong mountain was on a rainy day somewhere in the middle of the week which means no other visitors. A rare opportunity to be one-on-one with nature in this area. The way up is pretty long, about 3 hours, closer to the top there are steps those seem to be endless. A good exercise though. The view by the way is breathtaking, huge mountains covered with dark green trees, reaching the top be ready for the wind blowing but the view is even more facinating, all because the mountain is very high. There are some shops selling water and snacks but not many and only near the top. As a pleasunt bonus - free entrance.

Ok, so let's be clear since the beginning: if you are on a short trip to China, and come from a rather beautiful and natural environment (I come from South of France, think gorgeous beaches and sunny days), you are not going to be blown-away by Wutongshan. However, if you've been in China for a while, you will certainly enjoy that nice, green gateway, only 1-1.30 hour distant from Shenzhen center.
First and above all, here's my tip: try, as much as possible, to avoid going on the weekend, if your schedule allows. It gets quite packed since our fellow-locals too, enjoy a bit of fresh air, and I can already hear you rattling about how seriously over-crowded this country start to be ;-) So be smart and avoid the peak times. Go on a Sunday evening + Monday, for example.
Second, it's best if you can stay overnight as well. There start to have some really nice guesthouses in the small Wutongshan village, down the start of the main track: price vary from 200 to 500 CY a night, with some really nice rooms having views of the small river running in the village. It has a really laid-back atmosphere, when all the weekend hikers start to head back home: small streets with a few cute shops (traditional incense shop, Chinese handcraft, handmade teapots...), and a couple of nice restaurants with views of the river, cooking local-grown veggies (around 50 CY per person for a full set vegetarian diner) and serving chill' Qingdao beers. From there you can hike any of the nearby tracks, see some small waterfalls, and get those peaceful, nature's moments you've been so much missing from home. It's refreshing, rejuvenating, and for a few moments, you will forget you are in Shenzhen altogether. Nice with the family, too.
Note: there is a really nice small yoga studio on the main street, beautifully called "沁“ ("to gladden the heart"). The studio owner, Jenny, provides private yoga classes there.

All in once, Wutongshan may not be yet at the level of Yangshuo, Shangrila or other beautiful China gateway spots, however it is a very charming place, with nice potential. Above everything, it is very close to town. Perfect for a short 1 night- 2 days gateway. Go and try it out!

I'm quite an active person -- I run and work out at the gym several times per week. But this hike was not easy! My legs hurt for days afterward. Mostly because half of it was stairs, going up and down. The view from the top was beautiful, and the workout was good! But it's not for people who are out of shape. Try not to go on a beautiful weekend day, as it will be totally full of tourists from all over China, and they blast their hiking music all over the mountain as they walk. Not really a great way to commune with nature.

This "National Park", which surrounds the Wutong Mountain [elevation: 3100 ft/900 metres, with its three "summits"] is exceedingly well located. While very close to the built up areas of Shenzhen, once in the Park, with its lakes, forests, streams and lovely, well trended gardens, one can easily forget how close you really are to Shenzhen!! Most people take a hike on the many mountain walking trails-- and the "vistas" (especially when its sunny) are really amazing. There are two major "walking sections"... the lower section [a "good walk" for many travellers] and the upper section [with its several thousand steps]. Good walking/trekking shoes are advisable.

I hope that this Review has been helpful.
