About
Nestled in Bur Dubai, this traditional market exudes old-world charm. Navigate the alleys and find stores and traders selling raw silk, wool, cashmere, perfumes, spices, and dry fruits—you'll find it hard to leave empty-handed. Just remember to barter for a good deal! It's also great for unique souvenirs including abayas (full-length women's robes), thawbs (Arabic robes), silk scarves, and even tailored garments. The best way to get there is by metro or you can take the scenic route on an inexpensive abra (boat) from Deira. The souk is also a stop along many old city tours of Dubai. – Tripadvisor

- zuvBucharest, Romania36,933 contributionsOld fashioned tradeNot as big as I expected. Similar to other bazaars in Arab countries or Turkey. A mixture of aromas and heavy smells, of beauty and misery. You can't walk quietly, the shopkeepers are constantly harassing you, trying to make you buy all kinds of things from them. Tiring! Beware of charlatans, they ask for inflated prices!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 November 2023
- Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands5,749 contributionsSouk geared to tourists in Bur DubaiIn many ways the old souk in Bur Dubai feels like a relief from the glitzy modern town. Individual entrepeneurship results in many different stalls and small shops selling souvenirs, spices, clothes, jewelry and what not. Mainly run by people who originate from the Indian subcontinent be prepared for tricks, though there are fair business dealers as well. Do not start bargaining, if you have no clue about what is a reasonable price. Vendors often start asking exorbitant amounts of money for junk.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 16 December 2023
- David TLondon, United Kingdom42 contributionsDisney meets Arabian nightsNice place to wander, a bit Dubai meets Disney, as it’s clearly not authentic but made to look very Aladdin but fun never the less. Some of the prices seem inflated but there are bargains to be had, and against all reviews that say you can’t haggle, try. We got some movement on prices, and the traders are really nice if cheeky! You will be swamped with the coach tours, but there are plenty of side alleys and shops to slip into to avoid the camera phone waving hoards.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 February 2024
- Danni BBirmingham, United Kingdom69 contributionsNot the best place if you have social anxiety but nice souvenirsThis was somewhere high on my priority list because I wanted to be immersed in local culture. This certainly achieved that but is definitely overwhelming. There are lots of stands and the sellers will try any tactic to get you inside including physically grabbing you, steal my husbands hat so he had to go back inside to retrieve it and dressing you up for a picture then trying to convince you to buy it because they already dressed you in it. There are some lovely spices and souvenirs but we preferred to buy from people that let us shop without the harassment. Be really careful visiting if you have anxiety.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 June 2024

In a pandemic if you want an afternoon with random people coming into your personal space and trying to flog you a Rolex this is the place for you. Looks quite nice but you can’t enjoy it because anything you look at you have someone pounce on you. I would probably have bought something but found the experience so annoying I jumped in a taxi and headed to the Dubai mall - if the authentic experience is the souk that’s not great.

Between Al Ghubaiba metro station and Al Fahidi is Dubai's old souk or Bur Dubai souk. The area is dominated by South Asian shopkeepers. They did a good job in making their shopwindows look attractive.
Most, if not all outlets are geared to tourists, who sometimes arrive by busloads. The vendors are specialized in addressing these (often ignorant) tourists. Some of them have years of experience in assessing the psychology of potential buyers (not to say victims) and are successful in making superprofits on often worthless junk.
Walk through and observe. If you want to buy something make sure you have a cloe of the value of your preferred item before you start bargaining.

We spent the day souking it in Old Dubai touring the old souk, slice souk and gold souk. Since gold and silver are out of our price range and we didn't want to carry spices back to the US, we spent more time here. The vendors are more high pressure here than across the creek in Bur Dubai but we had fun bartering for souvenirs.

Be aware of people around the public toilet. They tell me that this toilet is not working and I can use the toilet in the their shop. In the shop they take me and my family to a room behind en close and lock the door, you cannot go out without buying a scam watch.
After a several times to tell them I not buy it, they let me go.
Never go back to this place again.

We were dropped off here just off the main traffic road as the traffic jams wouldn’t allow us to get closer to souk - we went around 4pm for reference.
The walk there you are getting haggled every step of the way to buy perfume. Once in there are loads of gold shops on each side of the market. You do get approached numerously asking you to come into one of their shops or secret shop down an alleyway - we declined as I wasn’t comfortable heading off the main mall walkways. I would recommend a tour guide to show you around as we didn’t really see a lot and trying to sins a working toilet inside the mall prepares fruitless - we did have men willing to take us to their toilet on their shops so I’m not sure if this is some kind of scam that they occupy the toilets within the mall. We did find a free one outside the souk. Overall an average experience for us girls

Take an RTA Abra across for an authentic experience- 1 Dirham. Lots of options in the variety of Souks (spices, gold, etc.). Remember, what they tell you is the price, you must haggle. Most of the items we bought were 1/2 of what they were asking. A must and fun visit in Dubai.

Great visit and we’ll worth the time. I give it 4* for the experience of it but come prepared for aggressive sellers and negotiate hard. We crossed over from the spice/fabric souks over to gold souk for 1 dirham each way and was easy to find and cross river with information booths both sides with English speakers. Most shops have same items which was disappointing but was memorable day out.

I went there for a visit. Ultimately the location and the surroundings are worth a look to the old Dubai.
I won’t remember this shopping experience though.
All prices are typically ‘to negotiate’ and all shops start from a very high price to close the deal at a ridicolous discount. And then u end up buying a lot of rubbish.
I can’t comment what u do with ur money but a visit is anyway worthwhile.

The souk is a lot smaller than other souks I have visited across the Arab world. Sellers are quite pushy and my boyfriend was grabbed on the shoulder. I managed to buy a nice Arabian style dress though.
I recommend bringing tissues in case you need to use the toilet as they don’t have any in the souk toilets (western and squat toilets available).

Hello! I have been searching all over (but have been unable to find) the date at which this store/souk was made! Does anyone know the date?
Thank you in advance :)

Hi
Am planning to visit alone, isit safe for me?
What is the operation hour for the souk?
Written 14 March 2018
I would say that Dubai in general is a safe place. The souk is very crowded and you will be constantly pestered to buy so be prepared for that. Normal business hours but I would go during the day. Have fun there is plenty to see :)
