We decided to climb to the fortress in the morning when the guide book said it opened, 8am. This was wise as the sun had not come over the mountain side at this time. It was still very hot and there are many steps(1350) to...More

Our family (5 year old kids) headed up the hill around 930 and earlier would have been better to avoid crowds and cruise ships emptying for the day! Watch your step as sloppy in places but view is worth it. No info about the castle...More

Absolutely exhausting climb to the top in the summer heat. But when you get the top it feels good and the it is an incredible view of the whole bay of Kotor. The ruins at the top and along the way up are fun to...More

This is definitely the best place to see the view of the bay. The castle itself is not in a good shape, it's just ruins. The entrance fee is 8 Euro and that's too much considering the state it's in. There is a 'hidden' path,...More

This was really nice to do, before our dinner in Kotor. We went up right before 8 oclock and some guys told us that it's free after 8 oclock. So we waited :) It's heavy walking all the steps (esp. pregnant) but really worth it....More

Whilst the views are undoubtedly spectacular, there are so many frustrations. €8 per person! What is the money being spent on? This is a historic monument worth preserving! Spend some money on it! As all the info and blurb suggests the paths(?), steps are in...More

There are many reviews of this attraction - all are right. It is beautiful, dirty, poorly maintained, magnificient, crumbling, and enchanted! Thus is not "for fun" - this is work. You are climbing over 260 m up the.side of a mountain on a narrow path....More

The view from up there is stunning, it’s a most see in Kotor, worth the hike! Though it seemed quite overpriced (8€/person). Everywhere was full of garbage, looked quite abandoned, like noone took care of the path. Also at the entrance they tried to fool...More

San Giovanni (St. John) fortress occupies an impressive site on the steep hillside overlooking old town Kotor. It is the highest point of the city walls. There is an entrance from a side street near the north gate, and it costs 8 euros (after 8pm...More

Not that I saw. There might be some animals in the surrounding mountains higher up but most people probably wouldn't see them as they tend not to like large groups.

Entrance is straight from a side street, there was no gate or barrier although 'ticket collectors' arrive about 8 o'clock and set up a table where they sell tickets at 3 euro. It is best to walk in the morning as it is still... More
