After visiting the archaeological excavations in Salona the day before, we bought a combined ticket for the Archaeological Museum and the archaeological excavations. This costs 10 euros, while the individual entrances cost 6 euros each.
The Archaeological Museum Split (Croatian: Arheoloski muzej) is located on the edge of the city center and is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The museum offers a selection of excavation artifacts worth seeing in a magnificent property including a garden.

Museum is a bit of a ways out of the old city of Split, but not too far of a walk. I was a bit disappointed to find out that the museum is basically all outside in a garden, with no signage to explain what your'e looking at beyond small descriptions of dates. It felt like you could've snuck in and not paid for all the employees were present. For what it was, the museum feels overpriced, especially compared to some others in the area.

A focal point of this museum is the amazing material recovered from grave sites in the old Roman and later Christian city of Solana just north of Split. There are examples of many objects aimed at helping the deceased navigate their way to their noble resting place, the Elysian Fields. They include small glass lamps, coins, jewelry made of amber, and even a small glass boat. Excellent signs in Croatian and English explain what’s on display. Large sarcophagi are on display in a delightful, relaxing outdoor courtyard. We had the whole museum to ourselves—so odd considering the crushing hordes in the Peristyle. The museum is an easy 10-minute walk from the old town. Pick up a 50% discount card at a TI.

Inside the exhibition is not extensive, but there is much to see that is also worthwhile if you go outside. You must love archaeology. And of course, visiting that museum is especially doable if you spend enough days in Split.

while the outside courtyard with some beautiful pieces can be visited for free, you pay an entrance fee of 40 Kuna p.p. for the inside exhibition. At our visit (April 2022), there was an excellent exhibition on the island of Vis and the first and most important Greek settlement there, basically the beginning of civilization in the Adriatic region. Unfortunately, the explanations are in Croatian language only, but the exhibits are really amazing.

I had a terrible experience with a phenomenally rude individual. After waking up and walking through town specifically to visit this museum, that I had been looking forward to seeing, I met with disappointment. In a city filled with hordes of foreign travelers, this museum has information displayed in three languages, NOTHING in English (French, German or Spanish either). I patiently awaited the ticket salesman's notice to con firm this obvious fact by asking him 'no English'? He affirmed my observation and suggested my paying extra for a book. As I stood trying to determine a course of action, he decided for me by raising his voice and encouraging me to depart. I stumbled outside confused, where he shortly followed me to make CERTAIN I exited the grounds instead of admiring their outside artifacts. I might have chosen to stay and look at their collection without the English explanations, but his unwelcoming attitude ensured that didn't happen. I now understand why all of the international tourists in Split stay crammed into the tight historic quarter .. The rest of the city is for locals only!

Found this to be very disappointing. Indoors was one room displaying a temporary exhibition of Roman glass objects, which was fine.
However, the main part of the collection is Roman stonework, mainly from memorials and graves. It is housed outside, but under cover, with very poor captioning. Altogether the displays were very fragmented and disjointed.
I would have expected an "archaeological museum" to cover a wider range of history and be more informative.
All in all very poor and not worth the uphill walk from the old town. Unless you are especially interested in Roman memorial stones, avoid.

Archaeological Museum Split is located in the surroundings of the old town of the city, in Dalmatian Coast. It is a museum, where you can see some archeological objects from Roman times like vessels, mosaics, objects related with cemeteries or some other. Really, the best part is the terrace, where you can see a lot of them. Also, here you can learn about the Roman history of the city, really interesting.

The museum advertises itself as the oldest in Croatia, with exhibits from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, it turned out to be extremely small, the most interesting being the things from the nearby ancient Roman city displayed under the sheds outside. The guy at the ticket office was sleeping like a corpse and we couldn't buy tickets, we couldn't even wake him up...

Cool museum, outside part really nice interesting stone sculptures and pleasant in the shade.
Indoors exhibition closed July 2021 due to renovations.
However the garden part was quite enough for us (visited with kids 10-15)
