This is where the ladies of Antigua used to send their servants to do laundry, back in the bad-ole-days of the encomiendas. Today it's a fountain and all the washbasins are empty. It is still a cool shady spot to sit down and mellow out. Mayan ladies will try to sell you their wares when you're there which is to be expected. Free access and a nice park with a church stretching in front of the structure.

I didn't know much about this place but it looks really good at night when lit up, vendors in area and few restaurants

At the historic center of Antigua and not far from "Parque Central", stands "Plaza y Tanque La Unión". This is a small square or park, with seating benches, palm trees and a few street vendors, selling souvenirs and typical food. It was inaugurated in 1853 and was initially known as "Plaza de San José". At one ot the square's sides, neo classical arches side 22 exquisite washing tanks - the old communal laundry, envisaged at a time when most Antiguan homes did not have proper washing facilities. Here, local housewives would gather to do their washing tasks and socialize with neighbors and relatives. Later, in 1925, its name was changed to "Plaza y Tanque La Unión" and it is still there. No more as a laundry, but as a historic and interesting attraction of Antigua. After the earthquake of 1976, the site was somehow damaged and was completely renovated in 1979. A quick visit, some pics and keep going. There is still a lot to visit at this beautiful city - a Unesco's appointed "World Heritage Site". Enjoy!

This is a the colonial communal laundry. It is a beautiful space, near to the central plaza. Surprisingly big. Crystal clear water. Fascinating, and would be a good thing to show children

A small park where people laze around. A few vendors selling typical food. A bustle of colours and smells. It is well maintained and safe.

This small park has a few food vendors selling snacks and local food. Apparently washerwomen come here as well, but we didn't notice that when we were here.

Where women used to do their wash in bygone days. But there are no signs to say how and when, or if it is in use any more (I think not). Also, the neighboring park is under reconstruction, surrounded by ugly green corrugated fencing which makes an unattractive background and is again with no explanations.

Nice little park and plaza lined with palm trees. There a more locals and vendors for locals here than the central plaza. Nice photo spot. On a clear day you may see the volcano erupting from the distance.

Always nice to walk by en route to ruins and attractions in this part of town, good views of the Fuego volcano, which is still regularly active (as of June 2019).
