- David LAtlanta, Georgia149 contributionsLovely Colonial QuarterWe just came back from Panama City. Our expectations for the Casco Viejo were for it to be similar to Old San Juan. We actually enjoyed it a lot more. The architecture is beautiful (a bit more diverse than OSJ). And while Casco Viejo doesn't have big attractions like the two forts in OSJ, it felt more charming. I think part of it is that OSJ is very much a cruise destination with thousands of passengers visiting for the day each day. Casco Viejo doesn't have the same touristy feel (like it would empty out each night at 5pm). That's not to say that we don't also like OSJ, but this was a real treat.Visited December 2022Written 30 December 2022
- Adam RPotomac, Maryland50 contributionsAbsolutely Beautiful Restoration of the old cityCasca Veijo is filled with restaurants, rooftop bars, historical sites, churches, stately government buildings, etc. all in a remarkably restored, colorful, charming old city. Highly recommend roaming the streets and taking in this beautiful landmark.Visited December 2022Written 1 January 2023
- Ed WAlto Boquete, Panama4 contributionsCasco Viejo New Years 2023A great place to explore and get a taste of Panamanian history or buy a few trinkets. We visited during the New Years holiday, so tourists were plentiful, but no so crowded as to feel so. Visited during daylight hours and never felt that personal security was an issue. Plenty of photo ops.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 January 2023

- Rochelle FRandolph, New Jersey973 contributionsInteresting to walk aroundCasco Viejo is a total mix of renovated and beautiful buildings with balconies that are so nice to look at. On the same block, there are also buildings which Are crumbling or need work so the city is a work in progress. Lots of shops, line the street with mainly goods for tourists. There are also a number of restaurants That are nice (don’t miss Fonda lo que hay which serves elevated street food). The Plazas- Herrera, Independencia are nice to sit and people watch We did not take a guided tour but have walked around a few different days. There seem to be some nice hotels also (although it is noisy here - a con) but certainly lively with plenty of restaurants and places to get a drink-pro).Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 January 2023
- SteveB6622802Harrisonburg, Virginia13 contributionsOld TownOur guide took us on a driving tour of the old town in Panama City. Since we were limited for time, we only got out once to visit a few buildings and plazas. We'd return to spend more time and hope to in the future.Visited January 2023Written 16 January 2023
- Novo world TravelHialeah, Florida50 contributionsPicturesque Old age cityPicturesque, old age city with great food and rooftop bars. The city is being restored beautifully. The churches are beautiful inside and out. Balconies with beautiful metals and flowers . Downtown views from rooftops are amazing. Price is pretty much like the US. Stayed at the Central Panamá Hotel.. location, cleanliness , comfort, and charming.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2023
- Trini_TravelistaTrinidad351 contributionsGet transported back to the pastOne can definitely get lost wandering these streets with all of the little quaint shops and restaurants. You can typically see a lot of tourists wandering the streets and weaving in and out of the buildings. There is always some activity happening and we were lucky to catch the Lunar new year celebrations during our time.Visited January 2023Written 29 January 2023
- coldfootwpulsesRedondo Beach, California351 contributionsUnderwhelmedreally quite underwhelmed by casco viejo. it sure had a lot of interesting history and buildings. there were a few ruins/churches. at this point it's pretty much a tourist trap. sadly, if this is the second best destination panama city has, it's a problem. i even took a walking tour for 3 hours. could have been done in one and half.Visited January 2023Written 31 January 2023
- SoCalTravelGal23 contributionsBeautifulI had read online that it's difficult to drive in this area, so I left the rental car at the hotel and took an Uber. All you have to do is enter "Casco Viejo" into the Uber destination, and your driver will know where to go. Uber is also super cheap in Panama! I had also read online that you can do a self-guided walking tour, so I didn't arrange a guided tour, and I was really glad because the entire area is posted with self-guided tour signs that are very easy to follow. We got there early in the morning (8 am) on a Monday, and it was not crowded or hot. We really enjoyed walking around on our own and seeing all the beautiful sights. It was safe and clean. When we were finished, we simply hailed a taxi (they are everywhere). It definitely helps if you can speak a little Spanish to communicate with the taxi drivers. Overall excellent experience!Visited January 2023Written 1 February 2023

We visited this unesco world heritage site as a part of our tour of the old city. It was impressive and well restored. Many of the churches were beautifully maintained. There were also nativity scenes which were really huge. Must do in Panama City

One of the TOP places to visit in Panamá City. Lots of history and culture, museums, shops and greta restaurants. The area is very safe and has great views of the city skyline.

You must add a visit to the old city to your visit. The French and Spanish architecture is beautiful. Although the area has seen a lot of gentrification, you can find pockets of true authentic buildings. A walk through lovers lane on the waterfront by the new Sofitel hotel is a must, the views are amazing

This is the old town of Panama city, and is well worth a visit, with very well preserved, or restored old buildings. The area is full of restaurants, bars, and shops.
It is well patrolled and safe to walk a boat. From certain points, you can see the ships lined up to enter the canal. They are lovely old church ruins.
I have visited many old areas in south, and Central America and I would rate this excellent.
The modern Panama City is full of high-rise buildings many of them quite ugly. It is surprisingly large and spread out.

Casco Viejo aka "Old Town" is a beautiful historical town, heavily influenced by French and Spanish. Very safe BUT outside the border west side of town is very run down and dangerous according to police, l would not go outside the "border" of this Casco Viejo area, day or night

Casco Viejo is a wonderful mixture of history, museums and chic restaurants. You can wander through the side streets and dart in and out of shops. There are wonderful hotels and great restaurants tucked away. Lots of indigenous art. Definitely a must for Panama City. The Canal Museum is one of the best ever.

Such a cool area - amazing bars & restaurants, great architecture, a fascinating Panama Canal museum (more interesting than visiting the Canal itself honestly), plus many historical sites.

Hi there, I will be visiting Panama in late February and will be staying in Casco Viejo for the first and last night of our trip. This will be the 3rd visit to Panama for my husband and I and we love staying in the old city before driving down to Azuero. This time my father will be joining us, and as he is a devout Catholic I'm hoping to plan our arrival date to allow for a Sunday mass before driving south. We have to get to Playa Morillo before dark, so logistically we have to leave Casco by 10 AM at the latest before heading to Albrook to pick up the rental car (which has been a 2-3 hour process in our prior experiences). Does anyone know of a church with Sunday Mass at 8 AM or earlier that we can go to? Thanks!

We stayed at the Magnolia Inn (and loved it! Know that there are older rooms and new rooms). The owner (Reggie?) was super helpful and I know can answer your question.
Hi, everyone! I'm planning a trip to Panama City and I'd love to visit Casco Viejo. I'm just wondering if it's dangerous to go there at night? Like 7-10 pm. Thanks!

Hi! Going to Panama solo so wanted to get a guide to be safe and see more local sights. You mentioned a guide, where do you pick up one of those? And approx. what is the cost? Thankyou!

I used a self-guided walking app called GPSmyCity available on apple apps. Free guide works well and you can download the walk you want to take.
Part of the area is rehabbed, some areas not yet. Go during the day and you should be fine. Have fun. There’s a good taqueria for lunch on a side street

Anyone have insight on WiFi access. Was planning on taking an Uber into the city and was wondering if I would be able to get online to order one for a return trip?
I know I can take a regular cab but I've heard Uber prices are better.

Most pubs and restaurants have wi-fi connection, not only in the Casco, buying a local simcard is LOT cheaper than roaming.

Is the city English speaking and Spanish.. I suppose, but how bilingual are the shops and restaurants?

As with all things the answer is "it depends". Many hotels and guest houses have someone who speaks English. Larger restaurants that cater to the gringos will also usually have someone that speaks some English.
Most Panamanians know some English. The question is why don't you learn some Spanish too? Making the effort to learn the local customs and language goes a long way in improving the quality of your adventure.
