About
We are a non-profit, non-governmental museum that aims to promote appreciation of Chinese art and culture. We strive to facilitate general understanding of how the art world in Hong Kong is enlivened by a diversity of cultures and how the local community is enlightened by a wealth of Chinese traditions. With the emphasis on China and Hong Kong art and culture, we organise thematic exhibitions with objects on loan from collectors, artists and other cultural bodies. Related talks and guided tours are also offered to enrich our visitors' experience. All are welcome to visit the museum during its opening hours without prior appointment and free of charge. Our opening hours: From Tuesday to Saturday 10a.m. to 6p.m. (closed on Mondays, Sundays, and all public holidays).

Didn't think a private museum in HK would amount to much, so it took me a long time before I finally visited it as it was kind of out of the way (actually only about 8 min from the Nga Tau Kwok MTR station and not hard to find using Google map, maybe a few more minutes from the larger Kwun Tong MTR station). It was actually fairly spacious since it was housed in an industrial building (rent probably much cheaper), but what surprised me more was that the exhibitions were pretty good. No world class exhibits, but the exhibitions focused with oft-overlooked themes as well lessor known artists (many local). They even published exhibition catalogs (which were pretty reasonably prized too) and had an open space area. Worth a look if the special exhibitions were of interest to you (just check out their website) and if you wanted something a bit different. And oh, free admission and a nice view of the cruise terminal, with guided tour offered only through prior appointment.

Although the location is out of the way, this is a beautiful space with interesting exhibits of primarily Chinese art (with English signs). If the show appeals to you, it's worth the trip to Kowloon.

The museum is located in Kwun Tong in a brand new building of modern design among a mix of old light warehouses and industrial buildings. It's not hard to find if you go by taxi. If you are on a cruise visiting Hong Kong, it's about a three minutes ride by taxi from the terminal. By subway, it's about a ten to 12 minutes walk from the nearest MTR station at Ngau Tau Kok 牛頭角 Station on the Kwun Tong Line. Get there before Dec. 1, 2018 when the current exhibition ends. We happened to watch a TV news report on the exhibition of XU BeiHong 徐悲鴻 and his compatriot great work of art during that period of Chinese painting. Wow what an exhibition! We are so glad we went. All the paintings were on loan from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. It is the first time these painting are exhibited outside Mainland China. All the famous Chinese artists' works aside from Xu; like Chen Shizeng 陈师曾, Qi Baishi 齊白石, Zhang Daqian 張大千, Huang Zhou 黄胄 , Wang Shao ling 王少陵 , Li Hua 李樺 and many others are all on display. Well worth the trip and effort to find this gem of a museum. Besides, it's FREE admission. If you have a couple of hours to spare while in Hong Kong, do not hesitate, GO!

This is a little out of the way in Kwun Tong, an interesting area in itself, but is worth seeking out. I saw an excellent sketching exhibition there and it included a guided tour, which was very informative. The space is a really good one too, so it's worth registering for tickets and heading over!

I would never imagine myself to find a place like this in Hong Kong! Set in the middle of all the busy industrial and commercial buzz in Kwun Tong, Sun Museum expressed itself as a contemporary and boutique museum in Hong Kong. It is rare to find privately owned museum in town, not to mention that it has mastered all the finest details with a personal and unique touch, creating a place that is so peaceful and pleasant.

The experiences at this museum is an unique one. The arts collection are well-selected, with combination of both Modern Hong Kong artist and traditional China cultural heritage. The guide also has very good knowledge, which make the art appreciation experience even better. Will certainly visit again.

I thought i would just walked through the exhibits in 5 minutes.... But oh boy... i was enthralled for almost 45 mins!! ( if not for a meeting, I would have spent more time there). Sun museum is all about Hong Kong artists/arts.. not easy to explain , but a joy to see and be enlightened by the curator there. I learnt much about lacquered pieces , crafted wooden boxes, semi-precious stone craving ..etc,, and fascinating anecdotes of some Hong Kong artists. Ok, let's plan for another visit! :)

I am new to working in Kwun Tong area, and stumbled upon the sign to the current museum's exhibition as I strolled down the sidewalk after lunching on the waterfront promenade. Like most locals, I always had the impression of Kwun Tong being predominantly industrialized and overly crowded. This encountering proved otherwise.

Situated on the 4th floor of a newly refurbished commercial building, the museum didn't seem anything at a grand scale upon getting out of the elevator. The museum was featuring antiques at the time, and while I share limited art knowledge I became rather intrigued what this space (mostly its unique red walls and free admission!) could offer.

I then went on a self-guided tour for about 20mins (had to rush back to work!) and came away impressed with the pieces which this exhibition put on, the museum's entire layout and its view overlooking the Victoria Harbor. Oh, not to mention the lovely outdoor terrace (would make a good insta-worthy post)!

Prior to this visit, I've visited many Chinese art focused museums which are more or less designed in a traditional style. The Sun Museum, however, made me rethink Chinese art could be presented in a modern manner to attract more millennials. It was a well spent 30min break which I highly recommend and will definitely come back!

... and educational for myself and my wife. It showcases a diverse set of exhibits - with different kinds of paintings and antique boxes, some of which my daughter was immediately drawn to - "mommy, daddy, can we make our own boxes?" which we regretfully haven't gotten around to doing (hopefully soon...). I normally wouldn't recommend bringing kids to museums but this one isn't too drawn-out. We stayed for 30-45 minutes and all three of us enjoyed the visit.

The Hong Kong Museum of Art was closed for some reason, so I sought out the Sun Museum, which is situated in an office building quite a bit of way from central Kowloon. This is a privately financed museum with money from the founder of the company SML. It is really great that a large private collection of rather modern art made in styles of old Chinese traditions, is made available to the general public in this stylish way. There is a lot of symbolism involved, with colours and elements and a plan for the whole layout, including the terrace and the logo. It is not a large place, but tastefully laid out and most of the works are beautifully made. I was the only guest when I was there and could take my time admiring each work and reading all the interesting information. So, if you want to get away from the bustling city and just have a quiet time admiring modern artists who try to keep old Chinese painting traditions alive, the Sun Museum is the place to go. A great thank you from a Norwegian visitor to Simon Suen for his idealism, vision (and of course money..)
