The Sun Museum is a non-profit, private museum located on the 4/F of the SML Tower on Hoi Bun Rd in Kwun Tong just across from the Kwun Tong Promenade. They aspire to enhance understanding of Chinese are & culture and regularly host exhibitions featuring Chinese artists, particularly those in Hong Kong. Exhibitions are usually free while opening hours are 10am to 6pm (Tues to Sat), closed Sundays & Mondays.

Presently, Sun Museum is hosting an exhibition called 'Peaceful Colour' showcasing over 140 paintings by 70 members of the Hong Kong Artists Society. The works are nicely spaced and colourful representations of Hong Kong landscapes, streetscapes and daily life. It is an interesting exhibition if you are a fan of art, love Hong Kong and happen to be in the Kwun Tong area.

The Peaceful Colour exhibition will be shown until mid Dec 2023. Visit the museum website to see current and future exhibition line up.

My friend and I visited Sun Museum on 19 August 2015. It is a relatively new museum in Hong Kong. While it is located in an industrial area and requires a short walk from the metro, it demonstrates how passionate individuals in Hong Kong are dedicated to promote Chinese arts to locals and tourists. The museum is beautifully decorated with a very relaxing atmosphere. What's more important is the creativity of the designer of this museum to symbolise the Chinese five elements using different colours and to provide insight to visitors on the fusion of Chinese and Western arts.

We are very happy to be warmly welcomed by Mandy, our guide in the docent tour. Mandy performed her duty much more than a responsible guide by providing us lots of background information, answering our questions in great detail and making the tour a very interactive one. She is not only knowledgeable and presentable. She is able to articulate the very complicated art concepts in simple language and with great humour. It is difficult to find a guide who is as passionate as Mandy considering that she guides the same docent tour multiple times a day. She demonstrates that she truly believes in what she is sharing. I am very impressed with the tour.

In addition, the exhibition boards provide a concise description of the painting in both Chinese and English. While in some museums the translation may not match and complicates readers, here the translation is perfect.

Overall the museum is excellent. While it is not a large one, it has extensive collection of masterpieces and I am glad that there will be new exhibitions and activities going on. As the museum is non-profit making, I hope that it can have more marketing campaigns so that more people can hear about it.

With the waterfront nearby, the museum is a delighting place to go. There is a valuable collection of Chinese painting. Good docent tours enhance my understanding of the art. Looking forward to the coming oil painting exhibition.

Base on the good reviews of the guide, I booked for a guided tour in Cantonese.

The contents are good and comprehensive. But the biggest problem is that she speaks too fast, without any essence of being a guide. She is rushing out her script as fast as possible, our tour finished in 20 mins time. She speaks nearly without any breathe. At some points it is almost a pain to listen to her. The tour has only 3 people, and it is the only tour in the day. I really don't see any reason she needs to rush through it. Although she did asked 2 questions, but you can tell she is "pretending to make the tour to be interactive". Worst still, after the tour finished, after I have asked her one question, she disappeared back in her office in seconds.

(the question is: Why are some paintings covered in glass? It makes very difficult to see the painting because there are reflections from everywhere the viewer stands?)

After all, it's been a great disappointment for me to book this guided tour, because I need to arrive in a specific time, for a less than 30 mins tour. Her work would be better done by an audio guide, at least I can stop between sentences; and I don't have to come at a specific time.

I sound very critical to this tour guide because I can tell this is a very good art museum, his owner not only rich and has the relationships to borrow so many great paintings, but he runs it with heart.

The museum itself is nicely built with good taste, although it is located in an industrial area, but it is located along the harbour side. The notes along the paintings are well written. I even bought the book for this exhibition ($180). The book is printed in very good quality, the colors are very close to the original paintings.

This museum will run better if more people can come without reservations. I suggest they can even charge a fee for entrance or guided tour. When I arrive there are 2 receptionists. Probably they are quite free, I can hear them gossips. When there are too little customers, staff would just underperform.

If you are into Chinese art and culture, this museum is a gem. The exhibition I saw is about traditional Chinese painting and all of the artwork is carefully selected. Do not simply walk in. Join a guided tour (book it online. Free.) and the very knowledgeable docents will tell you the evolution of Chinese art and how each piece reflects societal value and aesthetic sense of certain era. I also like the souvenir porcelain mugs sold in the museum. Simplistic yet elegant.

It's a bit hard to find at first, but it was totally worth it. The design of this museum is rather special: it has a very modern design and it has a relaxing aspect in it.The guided tour is very thorough and unlike other museums which put the art 10 feet away from you, you can be up close to the paintings to admire them. However, what I enjoyed the most is its relaxing aspect: there are a few benches in the museum that allows you to enjoy the view, read a book or just relax; they even have a balcony, it's a bit hot for summer but it think it will be a blast to chill out by fall.

The museum is located in Kwun Tong in a brand new building of modern design among a mix of old light warehouses and industrial buildings. It's not hard to find if you go by taxi. If you are on a cruise visiting Hong Kong, it's about a three minutes ride by taxi from the terminal. By subway, it's about a ten to 12 minutes walk from the nearest MTR station at Ngau Tau Kok 牛頭角 Station on the Kwun Tong Line. Get there before Dec. 1, 2018 when the current exhibition ends. We happened to watch a TV news report on the exhibition of XU BeiHong 徐悲鴻 and his compatriot great work of art during that period of Chinese painting. Wow what an exhibition! We are so glad we went. All the paintings were on loan from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. It is the first time these painting are exhibited outside Mainland China. All the famous Chinese artists' works aside from Xu; like Chen Shizeng 陈师曾, Qi Baishi 齊白石, Zhang Daqian 張大千, Huang Zhou 黄胄 , Wang Shao ling 王少陵 , Li Hua 李樺 and many others are all on display. Well worth the trip and effort to find this gem of a museum. Besides, it's FREE admission. If you have a couple of hours to spare while in Hong Kong, do not hesitate, GO!

I would never imagine myself to find a place like this in Hong Kong! Set in the middle of all the busy industrial and commercial buzz in Kwun Tong, Sun Museum expressed itself as a contemporary and boutique museum in Hong Kong. It is rare to find privately owned museum in town, not to mention that it has mastered all the finest details with a personal and unique touch, creating a place that is so peaceful and pleasant.

The experiences at this museum is an unique one. The arts collection are well-selected, with combination of both Modern Hong Kong artist and traditional China cultural heritage. The guide also has very good knowledge, which make the art appreciation experience even better. Will certainly visit again.

The Hong Kong Museum of Art was closed for some reason, so I sought out the Sun Museum, which is situated in an office building quite a bit of way from central Kowloon. This is a privately financed museum with money from the founder of the company SML. It is really great that a large private collection of rather modern art made in styles of old Chinese traditions, is made available to the general public in this stylish way. There is a lot of symbolism involved, with colours and elements and a plan for the whole layout, including the terrace and the logo. It is not a large place, but tastefully laid out and most of the works are beautifully made. I was the only guest when I was there and could take my time admiring each work and reading all the interesting information. So, if you want to get away from the bustling city and just have a quiet time admiring modern artists who try to keep old Chinese painting traditions alive, the Sun Museum is the place to go. A great thank you from a Norwegian visitor to Simon Suen for his idealism, vision (and of course money..)
