The area
Neighbourhood: Wan Chai / Causeway Bay
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are the retail centres of Hong Kong Island. Filled with shops, malls and restaurants, both areas are bustling with people – tourists and locals alike. Causeway Bay has one of the highest rents on the planet, and is a bit more polished and modern than its Wan Chai counterpart. Beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye – find boutique stores in the above ground floors of buildings and wander into side streets to find interesting restaurants and shops tucked away from the main roads. Wan Chai especially has experienced a modern revival in recent times, with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars around the Star Street area. In addition, both areas contain many of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist attractions worthy of your visit.

However if you are checking out Wan Chai or just wanting to wander through a market street, then it deserves a look. There are only a few toy shops but they are each like little Aladdin’s caves, crammed full. Children looking to spend pocket money will find something here (action figures, collectible cards, Lego-like blocks, stickers and cheap and cheerful toys and souvenirs). I have found them a great source of party favours for kids’ birthday parties. The street is also lined with other market stalls and some outlet shops selling clothing, local foods, Chinese souvenirs, beads etc. Lots of colour and noise. The other time that it’s really worth coming here is at Christmas, Chinese New Year and Halloween. You’ll find it overflowing with cheap, fun decorations and costumes. Admittedly, they will be more gaudy than glam. It’s a fairly short pedestrian-only street so it’s quite safe to browse down the centre of the street, although it gets very busy and you will find yourself being jostled at times. Overall, Wan Chai is such an interesting area to walk through. You see a lot of local everyday life as well as the traditional and the modern sides of Hong Kong sitting alongside each other. From Tai Yuen St, you are very close to the Hung Shing temple which I'd highly recommend (entry is free). Also nearby is the Wan Chai wet market and Wan Chai St with its open air meat and live fish and chicken shops (not necessarily for the squeamish) .Visited August 2020Written 27 September 2020

Tai Yuen Street is also called Toy Street because of the high concentration of toy and collectables shops that line the street. These can be fun to visit and explore even if you have no interest in purchasing. The street is also lined with stalls selling mostly clothes, accessories and other consumables. At the intersection of Tai Yuen & Cross Street, you can wander in any direction, finding yourself right in the centre of Wanchai Street Market scene. Some streets are basically an outdoor wet market where you find meats, fish, vegetables, fruit, local sundries and casual eateries. Others are lined with more clothing, flowers & plants, fabric materials, dry goods, items for household use and knick-knacks. It is a bit like Jardine's Crescent Market in Causeway Bay or Fai Yuen Street Market in Mongkok. The entire street market area of Wanchai is rather neat to explore when weather conditions are favourable. However, like HK's other popular street market scenes, t can get really crowded here during weekends. Venders and shopkeepers don't mind you taking a photo or two, especially if you are making sure to not include them in the pics.Visited February 2021Written 18 February 2021

And the Queens Road East-end plant stalls always have interesting selections available. A decent place to visit if you need one of those things but don’t want to spend too much.Visited December 2019Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 August 2020

This is a street market clustered around the intersection of Tai Yuen Street and Cross Street, selling merchandise ranging from trinkets, toys, flowers, clothes, etc. It might appear mundane for locals, but for tourists it is an interesting sight.

If you google for things to do with kids in HK, the toy street in Tai Yuen would be there in the list. However, I got a little disappointed. My kids were excited because the descriotions or review were not so much as it is in reality. there were only a few toy stores. Nonetheless, we still bought some LEGO immitations just to have souvenir from this "must go to" place.

A street of schlock vendors selling the same junk as numerous other places in Hong Kong -- not even worth a detour!

Small street market selling all sorts and backed by shops mainly selling clothes and toys. It’s an ok place but nothing compared to Temple Street. In many ways the street itself seems better with some good people watching.

It may difficult to imagine that we can go nearby to buy toys at lunch time with low-cost after half-day office work/conference/exhibition in an unfamiliar country. But it can happen on the Tai Yuen Street in Hong Kong.
Central is the central business district of Hong Kong. For two MTR Stations’ distance, there is a famous Toy Street named Tai Yuen Street in Wan Chai. No matter how old we are, Tai Yuen Street can evoke our happy childhood memories. It is because every toy from the latest marvel heroes’ figures, limited edition Japanese figures to Tin Toy are available there.
Apart from toys, there is also a great place to pick up seasonal decorations. In the weeks before Chinese New Year, Halloween and Christmas, they sell festival decorations, party outfits, and accessories. In addition, many people in Hong Kong believe that good Feng Shui can attract prosperity and ward off bad luck. Feng Shui decorating can be found there.
Honestly, there are just less than 10 toy stores in Tai Yuen Street, even it is known as a famous toy street. For someone who has a tight schedule during a business trip in Hong Kong Island, the location is perfect.
