The area
Neighbourhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.
How to get there
  • Central • 5 min walk
  • Hong Kong • 7 min walk

I was very lucky to have been invited here by friends and had an absolutely fabulous time. The main and dessert were to die for. Ostrich is a meat that I have only sampled rarely and this cut had been braised to perfection. Meanwhile the passionfruit dessert just melted in one's mouth. The wine selection was likewise strong in terms of its range and quality.

Great location but terrible management. Rude waiters can treat you like ..... next to your wife and try to kick you out if you dont have the membership card, Even though you explain to them you been invited by a member friend and your member friend is just 5min away.

Came here for a dim sum special the FCC occasionally put out in the dining room. Selection was small but it was surprisingly authentic and tasty.

I’m sure that this club was the place to go when, as one reviewer put it, journalists were journalists. Nevertheless, it’s still worth a visit and has a good atmosphere to soak up over drinks and eats.

A great building. Decent food but menu reflected someone's else idea of dining eg, absence of good old staples. Choice of starters and soups limited. Got crowded at times and service was patchy. A members' club. Club has probably seen better days (when journalists were journalists) and may reflect the current sadness of HK?

As a member, never tire of this place. Location is in the heart of Central and food is just amazing. Drinks are great and wonderful atmosphere. Bert's Bar is fab for food, drink and live music on Wednesdays. Great atmosphere and place to take a break if you are running around HK.

Holding a guest membership we had a few nights out there, Bert's bar is lovely, bar area noisy as you would expect and the setvices are vety good, with friendly folks working there and dealing w heavy drinkers from Europe, Usa and so on.

While my club would fesk out when you show up in sandals and shorts, the Bar area is quite a place of great varietal dressings

The FCC is a legendary institution whether its for drinks ( very reasonably priced), good food ( downstairs in the bar or upstairs in the restaurant) or the dive that is Harry Bar - this is about a legendary as it gets. Expect journalists, diplomats, media types without any fuss and people just having a great time

What makes this place work is atmosphere, history, atmosphere, food, service and oh and atmosphere. Brill

Hong Kong is a little tempestuous at the moment (protests, political dramas etc) ... not that is ever a really relaxing place. It's hustle, bustle, crowds and movement ...
It's also possible to get a little bit tired of the (excellent) Chinese fare on the former British colony.
So ... if you are tired of noodles and the crush of humanity ... find someone that can take you to one of the last colonial buildings left in central Hong Kong Island that houses the "Foreign Correspondence Club" ... an oasis of nostalgia, British-ness, charm, gin & tonic ... and bloody good food! The FCC, as it is known, is a members only club basically for members of the media. Visiting foreign media ... such as myself ... can apply for temporary membership (before entering HK) by supplying their bona-fides and proof of media identity. The historical FCC home has an air of what the media once was ... the walls are covered with historical news photographs from bygone years (something that really pleases a photojournalist such as myself). Occasionally they also host exhibitions of contemporary news photography. The 'star' however is the food ... a massive menu spread across the classy Main Bar area where correspondence imbibe and natter ... and the downstairs Main Dining Room. It's not surprisingly essentially British fare ... steak and kidney and shepherds pies, sausage and mash ... feature along with more salubrious 'Blighty' dishes ... there is a Chinese menu as well, of course ... and the Indian food that also features is good too.
So ... all you have to do now is find a member to take you ... it will be worth it.
