…especially if you don’t venture off HK Island very often. In that the title of this ‘attraction’ is Tai Po Street, I suppose it goes for anything found in and around this area, which is great because it’s worth exploring to find lots of sights and products that you may not find elsewhere. Very local, very Chinese to Western sensibilities, but still very much a part of HK life.

One of the neat things to do in Hong Kong is visit a local street market where shops and street stalls are setup, selling vegetables, pork, seafood, dried sundries, candies and other consumables to local residents. You can find these type local markets through HK, including a really good example at Fu Shin Street in Taipo in the area of the historic Man Mo Temple and the Hong Kong Railway Museum.

The street is around two hundred metres in length and is very photogenic. Shop and stall-keepers don't mind you taking pictures of the food items. Lots of colourful and interesting foods that are popular locally but perhaps not something you will have seen in your home food and supermarkets. See pictures attached.

Visiting this market is something beautiful to some but functional for others. With three children under 10, this market open their eyes to the word “fresh”. Seeing live fish, freshly picked fruit and vegetables of all shapes and sizes, is something that was alien to them. If you are from a place that has open food markets then this may not be anything special, however, if you do most of your food shopping in a supermarket, this is an eye-opening experience and well worth a visit.

The indoor market is but one part of the experience.

If you like a vibrant authentic market area where the locals haggle and shop, you will love this place.

The wet market stalls are as authentic as they come. Most of the fish are alive and the butchering skills of the butchers - most with a lit cigarette going - are worth the visit itself. TEriffic to watch.

Heaps of excellently presented fresh produce, many of which we don't have in our shops. Virtually NO prepackaged goods in the food shops.

There is also a shop selling kitchen sinks. Go figure!

I spent around half a day at Tai Po Market and streets nearby. I find that this is a uniquely cute community; I saw the real local people and normal life activities. I saw a lot of elderly people sit and relax at the community sharing area, talk, and play chess ...(compared to the rushing life in central HK). I felt much more peaceful atmosphere in Tai Po, even though that’s the busy Tai Po market area. The food is cheap (compared to center areas) and delicious. That’s a good break for me from the super busy Hong Kong during Christmas period. Strongly recommended for quiet seekers, local life enthusiasts

In the United States, wet markets are known as farmers’ markets. While American markets sell mostly local produce, this Hong Kong market has a lot more to offer. As you walk down the aisles, you will see hanging cuts of meet and seafood of every sort laid out on tables. Here you will see a goat’s head, cow stomach and cow lungs waiting for purchase. It is the place where the locals come to shop and is an eye-opening experience for the tourist. The market is definitely a place where you can see the local culture in action. Be warned there may be a stench as you walk through the meat aisles.

Going off into the old town area, the sea used to be where the whole Tai Po Mega mall used to be. That is what the new Tai Po is built upon.

Lots of shopping in the mall, but it lacks everything in character that the old town Tai Po Market has to offer.

We wanted to head over to Tai Po Market and on doing so we noticed that there was a fresh food cooked centre more or less across the road. The fresh food cooked centre seemed to be very busy as many locals were coming and going from this building.

On stepping inside with the family, we could see that the food centre was a hive of energy. There was so much variety of cooked seafood dishes that were on offer so we opted to sit down for a bite as we had not breakfast.

Beware the smell, as is not for everyone and it is very fishy. This is to be expected, as the fish here is live and in abundance. The kids found it particularly difficult to stomach.

The other thing to be aware of is that the tables and the plastic seat stools are a little on the flimsy side. It would be beneficial to bring your wet wipes so that you can clean your table, stools, bowls and eating utensils just to be extra safe. The variety of restaurants in the freshly cooked food centre did not appear to be the most cleanest of places to us, so we decided NOT to take any chances especially since we were on holiday and opted to use wet wipes.

After we had completed a full circle and had checked out all the different restaurants that were available, we opted for Dim Sum. As far as we could tell, there was only one main specialist Dim Sum restaurant. We had 8 different dim sum dishes in total, the prawn ones were our favourites. The quality and freshness of the Dim Sum is as good as anything you will find and taste in the whole of Hong Kong. The prices were ridiculously cheap. Each dish cost approximately 20 HKD and the overall bill cost us 150 HKD.

We loved this place and we will definitely be returning for our dim sum breakfast. Please note arrive early, as Dim Sum stops being served around 11.30am.

We frequently visited the food stalls on second floor of Tai Po market because they provided a budget meal with exceptional good taste and fine quality.
I usually spent twenty dollars for a lunch set before playing table tennis on fifth floor. Occasionally I came at night to enjoy a feast of seafood for 2 with less than five hundred dollars. The shrimp and the crab was very fresh and delicious. The seat was not comfortable but the food was great.
You should come to have a trial of the noodle of a specific food stall because it was hand made with limited supply. It was very famous and closed in the afternoon.
