- Leigh F18 contributionsBest market visited in Hong KongGreat little market on the other side of the island. Great selection of clothes, electricals, ornamental stuff. From an Australian used to the run of the mill Melbourne and Sydney markets this was very refreshing! Great bus trip over the mountains gives you a great perspective of the high rise of the main CBD but then the affluent area of Repulse Bay. When you get tired you can rest down on the beach front at some great little cafes.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 October 2023
- Jon DBristol, United Kingdom379 contributionsGreat shopping tripGreat stop off in this wonderful market. Clean, varied and lots of different shops and stalls from food to gifts and gadgets, clothing and art. We stopped and a very friendly man writing Chinese writing on scrolls which we had our names done and the quality was superb. Thoroughly recommend.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 December 2023
- Hugary1Sydney, Australia8,708 contributionsStanley MarketsStanley markets has always been a favourite for us. You can take a bus for an hour up and an hour back. Or catch a taxi for $110HK one way and 25 min. There is only one new shop here in the last 5 years since our last pre covid visit. Several have closed. You can find similar items in the city markets but here the shops are better and more established. There was not a lot of people for a weekend and few tourists here or in Hong Kong in general. Place lacked the spark it has in past. But still great bargains to be had and we found a number of jewellery items and cloths. At shop 28 Chi Wai Co. where I have bought many items of clothing in the past at very cheap prices. Lets say a known shirt for $22HK that is $80 Aus. Bought two shorts that need adjustment. It was done free while we had lunch. Some of the bigger names who were on the outside of the market such as H&M are gone. Well worth a look and a hunt for that bargain. Lots of places to have a lunch or a beerVisited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 December 2023
- AustravellerPerth, Australia78 contributionsGreat bus ride to the market and lovely viewsStanley Market isn’t what it used to be, A lot of the market stalls and the old charm it had isn’t there anymore but it is still a worthwhile day out. The bus ride is well worth the visit alone. If you’re in Kowloon you can catch the star ferry for a few dollars over to Hong Kong and use the walkway over the bridge to get to the bus station at Exchange Plaza. Take the double decker bus no. 260 (express) 6, 6A or 6X for another few dollars . Sit at the front for a great view. The water front and pavilion at Stanley markets are lovely and a few good things at the market stalls. Not the variety and quality it used to be though. I can recommend a drink at the Smugglers Inn on the waterfront for an interesting resting stop. It’s a nice half day trip.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 January 2024
- Ingeborg56Oslo, Norway2,393 contributionsStanley market is very calm without energy compared to "old days"When I used to live in Hong Kong and also afterwards on visits,a visit to Stanley Market was a hit for both tourists and expats. But this time we came on a Saturday, and there were several shops which were closed. There were not many shoppers around, and I thought the place had a very depressive atmosphere!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 July 2024
- Pathfinder817155Sheffield, United Kingdom1 contributionGreat ExperienceFirstly I would advise purchasing an Octopus card online which you pick up at the airport. This allows tap and pay on all transport and many restaurants and 7 11s. You can top up at 7 11. There are lots of malls but I found them all to be rather high end shops but up to you what you want. The Underground is very good and the buses are good too, just tap your card. Not 100% sure but on buses price shows up on screen to tap (probably highest fare) but cheap anyway. If less may have to state destination. Never paid more than £1.10. 11hkd. Beer prices can be extortionate I paid £9 in a bog std bar but then paid £2.60 for 600ml Japanese beer with a meal in temple market. Ferry was quick and cheap. Also mrt does go to other islands but only a short stay.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 8 July 2024

Stanley market does not appear to have survived the pandemic and the absence of foreign visitors/tourists. We used to go every year until 2019 and it was a bustling market with cheap clothes stores and other shops. On a recent weekday late afternoon, the place was almost - eerily - empty, and most shops were either closed or had shut down altogether..pretty sad...

Do yourself a favour and support this little market. A bus trip from anywhere in Hong Kong costs about two pounds/four dollars, the people are super-friendly and there are all the HK gifts you need at a great price. It's clear Stanley has suffered post-covid, getting that 63 bus from Fortress Hill is the answer!

Good market, about 50 stalls. Way cheaper than Temple St night market, it’s in a neat little town right by the beach. A super clean bathroom is nearby for free in the municipal buildings.
Got some great things from Gifts Galore stall # 45, nice Filipina lady was very helpful, selling Jade jewelry and statues. Good lunch spot right around the corner where you can along on the beach in the shade. Best prices we saw for small Souvenirs like keychains & magnets. Easy to reach on the 40 bus, 20 minute drive for like $14hk or whatever.

In normal times, the Stanley Market is one of the buzzing, busy street market scenes filled with tourists and curious locals. It is a fun place to spend a couple hours in the leisurely seaside community of Stanley on the southern shores of Hong Kong Island.
Unfortunately, with tourists pretty much boxed out of Hong Kong because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the market is basically dead. Passed by on a Saturday afternoon recently and found only a few people amidst mostly empty shops lining the market street. A sad scene and something hard to imagine when recalling past visits, navigating through shoulder-to-shoulder pedestrian traffic and shops stuffed with shoppers. Not this year I'm afraid.

I guess if you like shopping while on vacation then this is a place you would like to visit. It is just not how I want to spend my time in Hong Kong. We escaped the crowded market and walked past the beach to Stanley plaza where we could sit at a pub and enjoy a bite and a beer while we waited while other tour members had their hour and a half of shopping. Restrooms are available.

After reading the extensive reviews both pre and post covid, I suppose I was expecting a little more than a meandering bus ride along a pretty coastline with a slightly zealot bus driver, followed by a quick walk up and down a pseudo blackpool esque promenade of some touristy burger and pizza joints and some well worn local restaurants. It definitely had an old colonial feel about it and not in a good way. The market is around 50 stalls grouped together, often repeating the same wares every 10 meters. A occasional bohemian piece in a gallery here and there, but definitely a place that's seen its best days. Note that should you venture via bus from Central station, you pass the 'Repulse' beach on the way, which looked quite nice for a stop and walk for next time. Better use your time to visit another island or a better tourist spot.

Do any of the markets at Stanley have an online store that they sell on too. I bought a great shirt there in January when I visited and would like to buy another but travel restrictions wont allow me to travel

Take a 6 or 6x from central. We found it best to get an octopus travel card and top it up as necessary.

Do the vendors take credit cards or must you have HK currency?
Written 8 May 2017
Some do but I would bring HK cash also. Stanley Market was way over hyped. The Women's Market is much better.
