While traveling this side of the Island, we made a little halt there, which I liked. It was seen on the same voyage as Stanley and Repulse Bay. It worked nicely as a destination as well. It was serene, charming, barely commercial, and incredibly picturesque.

It's a very popular beach with a wonderful view of the mountains and the sea. There are local restaurants near by and cafes if you're looking for food and refreshments.

Shek O beach is a must-visit place for both locals and travelers.

The water there is crystal clear. Calm and safe to swim. It has a free public beach. Usually well-maintained. I don’t think people rent out sunbath chairs and umbrellas, so it might be a good idea to bring your beach gears. For those who come with a group of friends, it might be a good idea to BBQ on the beach. You’ll find a couple of private BBQ sites where you can rent a table for four hours. Can’t recall the exact rate but the price is very affordable. The BBQ shop only offers the equipment and charcoal. You need to bring your own food.

For those who don’t want to BBQ, I’d recommend to come here in the afternoon, swim in the beautiful waters, take a walk in the village, and dine at one of Thai restaurants there. Shek O has very decent Thai food.

One thing to keep in mind is that Shek O is so remote that you can’t find an ATM there. If you need to withdraw cash, do it before your visit. Only one bus route reaches there and as a result, a long queue is expected on weekends.

Shek O is a lovely beachside village. Make sure you taste the best Thai food outside of Thailand, at the local Thai restaurant. If you're keen for an ice-cream, go to the shop with the soft serve ice-cream. More expensive but oh so worth it!

We got to Shek O village by bus after making the Dragon Back trail. We didn’t regret the decision as it was nice to relax with a drink in Cococobana enjoying nice views of the beach and then wander the streets of the village with colourful houses. The beach is well maintained with all the facilities - you can imagine it can be crowded on warmer days and weekends but this time it was almost empty and serene. Would recommend this combo on your day out: Dragon Back trail and Shek O beach.

Shek O Beach is one of the best beach options for fine scenery and good sand quality on HK Island. It is located on the east coast and accessible by way of bus route 9 from just outside the Shau Kei Wan MTR Station. This is a very popular place for locals and can see extraordinary crowds during the warmer months on weekends and public holidays.

The beach is around 230 metres in length, sand quality is fine and very nice to walk on. There are 3 or 4 lifeguard stations, typical range of services including public toilet, changing rooms as well as equipment rental shops. You will also find a handful of Thai restaurants just behind the beach.

Note: there is no shark net to or swimming platforms at Shek O and the beach is flanked rocky shores with large boulders and crashing waves on both sides so do be mindful to swim within reasonable distance to the beach.

Note: The Shek O village is rather interesting to explore. There is a historic Tin Hau Temple and a second more isolated beach called Rocky Bay Beach a short 6-7 minute walk from the main beach if this main Shek O Beach is too crowded. Further, if you walk to the end of Headland Road, you'll see the locally famous Blue Bridge (also called Lover's Bridge). Crossing the bridge to Tai Tau Chau, you can walk trails around some impressive boulders and viewpoints of the sea.

Note: For those that want to explore even further out, you can consider combining a visit to Shek O Beach with Big Wave Beach a couple km north, this is a famous cousin beach that is popular with surfers. Next, there is Cape D'Aquilar to the south, which has incredible craggy shoreline, wave crash spots and the peculiar Crab Cave. Hikers want to to consider combining Shek O with the Dragon's Back trail, just to the west of the beach. This is one of the most popular day hikes in Hong Kong and a place where you will see outstanding elevated views of Shek O beach as well.

Very crowded at weekends, but midweek is peaceful and well worth the trek. Lots of budget eateries, including Thai.

For those who have some time on their hands and are keen to see a very different side to Hong Kong, Shek O Beach makes a good half-day trip. It sits on the south side of HK island and is a popular beach, cradled between two mountains. The coastline is striking, with several small outlying islands and the village is a maze of narrow lanes with colourful houses, a traditional temple and several cheap and cheerful local restaurants.
It is a good swimming/family beach. There are lifeguards and facilities (toilets, change-rooms and showers).
Beach chairs and umbrellas can be rented cheaply and local shops opposite the beach have a great range of colourful inflatables, beach balls, buckets and spades, hats, water etc
There are a number of options for lunch but we usually choose either the simple Shek O Thai on the central street or the deck of Cococabana, overlooking the beach.
The only disadvantage is that it can get very crowded on a sunny weekend, sometimes claustrophobically so. On occasions we have found it hard to find a spare patch of sand to sit.
GETTING THERE: Shek O is off the beaten track for most tourists. If using public transport from Central/Admiralty, catch the MTR train to Shau Kei Wan station (exit B) and then get the No 9 bus which runs into the centre of the village. An uber or taxi is much quicker (under 30 mins) and will cost around $200HKD one way.

Shek O beach is located in the Southeast of HongKong Island. Easy to travel with kids and luggage.

How to travel:
1.Take a Mtr to reach Shau kei wan in order to save your energy from traffic,
2.From Shau kei wan take Bus Number 9 directly to Shek O beach stops just infront of the beach.
3.There are mini buses as well travelling to and fro to Shek O beach from Shau Kei wan.

On the way you can find lot of spots like Dragon's back, Cape D'Aguilar, golf course, resorts etc.

Shek O beach has many restaurants, shops selling beach wear, kids toys, etc.

I have seen lot of people surfing on the beach though there are less waves making it safe for kids and family to enjoy water.

There is a small stream of sweet water at the right hand corner of the beach guess making its way from the mountains to the beach. Loved playing in it and then dust of the sand.

This beach is a must visit place if you love mountains, hotels, restaurants around.

Carry your tent to dump in your valuables inside. We changed our kids inside the tent to avoid washroom hassles.

Clean water to swim, clean changing rooms and toilet, lifeguards for safety.

I guess pets are not allowed in this beach though.

I would rate it 10/10.

Lets go!!!

easy access from the city. Rent umbrella and beds from the ladies that will surround the bus as soon as it arrives. Negotiate.

Water is generally clean. Can be crowded on weekends but generally not too bad. Thai and other restaurants on the main street just off the beach, which offer good fare at a convenient price.
