The South Lantau and North Lantau Country Parks together have a huge number of hiking, mountain biking and running trails. Historical records show that South Lantau's criss-crossing village paths date back several hundred years. Many of the stone trails used by hikers today are the traditional village paths.
The Lantau Trail is probably the most popular hiking trail and is very easy to access because it starts and ends at Mui Wo. The 70km trail is divided into 12 stages which are all clearly marked and mapped so you can cherry-pick the stretches that suit your level of hiking and join the trail at that point.
Stages 9 to 11 are fairly easy. They have some bushland, dirt paths but also have a lot of flat, paved paths. Much of stage 10 is a level walk around the water catchment. Whilst they are not the most challenging stretches, they are good ones to combine with a swim at the Cheung Sha beach and lunch. In contrast, Stage 3 is one of the most popular hikes and takes you about up Lantau Peak (934 m above sea-level) and Stage 2 heads relentlessly up Sunset Peak. Buses run frequently from Mui Wo allowing you to join the trail mid-way.
The Lantau Trail is extremely well marked. Every 500 metres, you will see a metal plate marker, so it’s also very easy to gauge your timing and distance. Large map boards are placed regularly along the route. However, we have found it difficult sometimes to locate the start of a new trail head. There will be a sign and usually a set of stairs but it’s not always easy to find them if you are joining the trail mid-way so a good map is helpful.
Water, sunscreen and a hat are essentials. There are few toilets along the way other than those back along the main road.
On almost any hike through the country park, you will see natural waterways, panoramic views, mountain peaks, water buffalo, local villages, beautiful swimming beaches, traditional hillside village cemeteries and the reservoir and water catchments.

Technically this is two separate country parks, Lantau North Country Park and Lantau South Country Park. They border each other and represent a large tract of protected rural countryside on Hong Kong's largest island.

The North Country Park is a bit smaller at 22 sq. km area while the South Country Park is over 56 sq. km area, making it the largest country park in all of Hong Kong. Both areas were given protective Country Park status in 1978. Today, there are beaches, reservoir, numerous mountain peaks, seaside villages, bbq and camping areas, a nice variety of terrains, ecology and very good scenery throughout.

There are numerous biking and hiking opportunities to be enjoyed throughout the country parks. The most important hiking trail being the Lantau Trail which is made up of 12 stages and is 70 km in full length. The stages vary in difficulty and distance and are connected by fair means of transportation (Lantao Bus Co.), allowing hikers to concentrate on particular stages that interest them throughout the country parks.

Pre book the cable car to avoid the long wait at the cable car station and allow plenty of time for return journey.

We booked a tour to Lantau Country Park in Hong Kong. This tour was well worth it. We booked a private tour for six of us. You get a great ride in the Cable Car - fantastic views. Then on the Island there is lots to see and do. We booked to have lunch at the Temple while we were on the Island. Great lunch.

Great walk up and/or down between Tung Chung and touristic Ngong Ping village. Great sporty outdoorsy alternative to the cable cabin ride. Enjoy nature, views and some small monasteries along the way. Do visit the Ma Wan Chung fishing village and make nice sunset pictures from the jetty. Enjoy!

The park offers some breathtaking views of the adjoining islands of Lantau Island, which is the island at the airport.

This country park is located at the island on which there is airport. It provides you with quiet scenic views of other islands and the sea.

Lantau Country Park is great for hiking between Tung Chung and the Big Buddha. The main walking track is sealed with other tracks branching off to access great views. You can take the cable car from Tung Chung if you would like to see this area in a little more comfort and from above.
