The area
Neighbourhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

The Dragonfly Bar is located within the Tai Kwun grounds in Central. Opening hours are 5pm until late each night. This is a bar with a late 19th century art nouveau decor, making much use of Tiffany style lamps and featuring a rather impressive dragonfly sculpture behind the bar counter. They have a delightful indoor area as well as outside seating where a band sets up to play music on weekends as well.
We had a round a drinks here recently. The service was awkward being very rushed in taking drink orders and even attempting to remove cocktails well before we were finished. Signature cocktails tried tasted decent, not up there with our very best cocktail bars but not bad either. Fries snack order was fine. Environs were very unique and worth paying visit to see. We really liked the numerous hanging lamps and bar sculpture, might even return to experience the Dragonfly bar for that reason alone.

Pretty bar, but consistently violates HK's noise laws. Absolutely the worst possible neighbor to have.

Dragonfly is a small and opulent cocktail bar. It feels luxurious. The ceiling is a sea of 120 Tiffany styled lights and the bar is framed by a giant pair of dragonfly wings. The cocktail list is pretty special. They are not cheap but it's not the sort of place where you stay all night. It's the place you want to go to, to start off a night or else for a nightcap.
They make a good Negroni and I also liked Roselle’s Pillow (gin, white rum, raspberry liqueur, hibiscus, lemon).
It can be tricky to find because it is hidden away inside the Tai Kwun heritage centre. Coming from Central, if you take the Mid-Levels escalator up, you will see the entry about half-way up (just above Hollywood Rd). The flight of stairs on your left will lead you into the the old colonial Tai Kwun centre and you’ll find Dragonfly on ground floor in the old Superintendent’s House.
Due to covid restrictions, after a certain time in the evening, you will be asked to show copies of vaccination certificate for entry.

Magical bar in the heart of Central. The place is beautiful and has a certain awe to it. The staff is so kind and attentive, with the manager Liz being very hospitable. Will definitely come back many times! Timely sidenote: they are very mindful of the pandemic which makes it a safe place to go out for a drink.

Beautiful bar and outside area. I love it’s cool location and perfectly placed in the middle of Hollywood road. Courtyard area is super cool. Staff are excellent and happy to have some friendly chit chat while I wait alone for my friends to arrive making me feel really welcome and comfortable. Service is fast and friendly always!

I love this beautiful art-nouveau styled cocktail bar. If you want a place with wow factor, this is perfect.I’d recommend it even more strongly if you could only guarantee getting in. It’s very small and there is usually a queue.
It is cosy and intimate which also means that it can be crowded and noisy but it is so strikingly lovely.
The ceiling is a sea of Tiffany styled turquoise lights like dragonfly wings and the bar is a giant human/dragonfly, with wings spreading above the bar counter. Small cast iron dragonflies are dotted around the place, on the tables and bar. It’s a fantastical, sophisticated design created by Ashley Sutton who has done other Hong Kong bars as well ( Iron Fairies and Ophelia).
The cocktails are decadent too - Dragon’s Pearls (milk tea, mixed with mandarin, gin, cognac, and tapioca). Most are around HK$120+.
It’s probably not the place you will stay for a whole night but it’s perfect for a couple of drinks. We tend to go if we have visitors and our preference now is to go at the start of the night, when we are likely to get a table without waiting.
If it is full inside, they may offer tables outside in the covered courtyard (a mix of lounges and high tables and stools). We have sat there before but it doesn't have the same atmosphere or décor and if we can’t get inside, then we tend to go elsewhere now.
GETTING THERE: Dragonfly truly is a hidden gem but that also means it can be tricky to find. Persist - it's worth it.
The easiest way to get there is from the Mid-Levels escalator. About half-way up (above Hollywood Rd), take the flight of stairs on your left - I've attached a photo. The stairs will lead you into the the old colonial Central Police Station (now the rejuvenated Tai Kwun Heritage Centre). Dragonfly is on ground floor in the old Superintendent’s House.
