About
KA Atelier, a private painting studio, is a reflection of Hong Kong’s art and culture, frequently described as "East meets West", due to it’s mix of Chinese traditions with Western influence from British rule. KA Atelier offers unique art classes melding Chinese painting skills and philosophies with Western modes of expression. Ideal for Hong Kongers to escape the city’s hustle and bustle as well as for tourists to discover the traditions of Chinese painting which I am determined to keep it alive by passing on the lessons of my late teacher, a renowned Chinese Painting Master, with a modern approach.

I went to Ka Atelier as one of the GoCity experiences, with my wife, daughter and sister.
2 of us have backgrounds in art but Ka Atelier was very different but thoroughly enjoyable.
Carole was a wonderful teacher, so passionate and concise with her explanations and knowledge of ink painting.
2 hours isn’t enough but we left totally satisfied from the experience.
Carole wrapped up our final pieces, in a protective package which was a wonderful touch. Definitely try the tea as well.
Highly recommended experience. You’d be hard pressed to find such a warm teacher and experience, even if Chinese art painting isn't one of your interests.

This was honestly my favorite part of our Hong Kong trip. I wasn't expecting much and actually expected to be doing calligraphy rather than actual painting -- so doing an actual painting that I got to take home was a very welcome surprise.

The location was in a small studio in Central so it was easy to get to. Once you get in, you're greeted by a very cute and inviting art studio. Carole thoughtfully went through the history of Chinese Ink Painting, what makes it special, and how it's different from other types of painting. She guided us through different phases of learning how to use the brushes, how to do different strokes, how to work with different rice papers, and even how to extract our own ink for painting.

I've done a couple of Paint Night classes but this experience was just so relaxing. It was nice to take the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong away for a few hours and zone into painting our own keepsakes. It was a very intimate setting but at no point did it feel overwhelming.

I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Hong Kong.

As an art lover, this was one of the most memorable days I had in Hong Kong. The instructor was amazing. And she even gave a short history lesson that was very organized & used visual aids. I am so sad I didn’t book more time. I’m totally kicking myself for that one.

KA Atelier.

The interior of the KA Atelier. Private Painting Studio is very small, just like any other Hong Kong building. However, it was a place filled with materials and props from teacher Carole who gave a good lesson. I could feel the touch of carole everywhere. There were works of her students and various books.

Before class, Carol gave me a cup of hot tea. The class began with a basic explanation of Chinese conversation. I was impressed by the various brush, traditional ink, modern ink, features and style of paintings, and I could understand
the various materials and the book she explained. And she explained various texture to the paper which is essential when I draw a picture. I don't know much about paintings, but thanks to Ms. Carole's explanation, I could understand the basics about what it is.

The teacher showed us a demonstration first, and we draw our own copy of it. And practiced alone, carole teacher coaches incorrect posture or ink control while watching us brush strokes.
If you know nothing about a painting, or if you know or have learned something about a painting, as I do, the class goes on different levels depending on who you are. And it was not just bamboo painting like that, but also a place to experience various workshops by painting on pottery.

If you want to add to the flavor and fun of traveling to Hong Kong, I think it would be a good idea to ask for a small workshop organized by KA-Atelier.

Booked a 2 hour introductory lesson through a travel website. A little difficult to find (using google maps), but worth the effort. Carole was a good instructor who obviously has a passion for her heritage. As part of the lesson we were instructed on the basics of Chinese Art History (not long enough to lose the attention of my ADD husband) and the fundamentals of the materials available to use. We were able to practice the basic techniques that we were going to use before 'boldly' committing to our project (ink art is not for the timid - unlike oils there's no going back!). If you are visiting HK and have the opportunity I would definitely recommend - if nothing else you're going to go back with a souvenir unlike anyone else's.
