Perfect cooking experience for the whole family
Thank you Edith for the cooking class! The whole family enjoyed the experience, from the visit of the wet market to the making of the dumplings. With Edith cooking seem so easy, even for the kids; they loved preparing the food and even more eating it!
Thank you for coming and taking the time to write me this great review! Edith

A fantastic & delicious cookery class!
We had the pleasure of attending a cookery class with Edith in March 2024 and it was just great! First we visited a market together, where we shopped for food and learnt lots of details about specialities in Hong Kong. Then we prepared everything together and cooked various dumplings. Edith is a great person who approaches everything with a lot of heart and humour. It was a fantastic morning that made us want to cook the dumplings also at home :)
Thank you for joining me! Edith - LCE

    Great experience for foodies
The visit to the local wet market was fantastic - answers to all my questions and able to purchase super fresh ingredients. We then cooked what we purchased. Dumplings with lots of veg and shu mai, and stir fry from what we purchased. Hands on and patient. Went with my sister who is less able and Edith paced it very well. Edith is great and class is great. My nephew who is local said best shu mai he has tasted in HK! This experience is a winner.
I am so happy I passed the 'nephew test'! :) Thanks for the review! - Edith - LCE

We learned how to cook like a local!
We had such a great experience! We learned a lot and had such a good time. It was great to explore the wet market with a local who could tell about the different produce, meats, sea food and more. And of course, learning to cook local dishes was the highlight for the whole family.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful family with me! Happy you took up my suggestion and visited Shamshuipo as it is always an excellent place for good, cheap eats. The kids were great! Edith - LCE

    Delicious and authentic experience!
My partner and I had an amazing private home cooking class with Edith in Hong Kong. We started with a market tour where we learned about the locals' everyday life and their love for fresh food. Edith designed a menu tailored to our dietary requirements and interests, and we made some delicious local dishes, including steaming dumplings and local vegetables. The class was personalized and informative, with great conversations. We arrived hungry and left stuffed! Edith's teaching style was engaging and insightful. I’d highly recommend this class to anyone looking for an authentic and enjoyable culinary experience in Hong Kong.
Thanks so much Lisa! Happy to have had the chance to cook with you both! Edith - LCE

    Amazing!
Absolutely fantastic cooking class. Edith offered so many pro tips and terrific stories about cooking in Hong Kong. Edith is patient but also happy to move quickly during class since we had a lot of ground to cover. Edith explains as much as the guest wants and I like a lot of explanation! I look forward to my next class with Edith, terrific experience and of course we cooked delicious food.

What an excellent way to experience Hong Kong cooking! Edith was so graciously flexible with our special request for a fish dish, and walked us through the wet market where stalls were butchering the fish in front of us. She then took us to a different market and explained all the different types of meats and vegetables, how to spot quality, and described different ways to cook and eat the produce.

The dishes we made were all delicious, and Edith provided so many tips that we’ll be making all of these dishes when we get back home! She was very personable and eager to share her stories, which made the whole experience very intimate and comfortable.

Highly recommend this curated experience for anyone interested in learning how people in Hong Kong actually cook and eat!!

This Local Cooking Experience Hong Kong tour and cooking experience are amazing!!! My friend, expat living in HK, and I, foodie person from US, went to the wet market and cooked at Edith’s house in March 2023. This tour was so customizable! And is perfect for both visitors on vacation and people living more long term in Hong Kong who are looking for a fun activity to engage more with their community. Casual eaters, foodies, and generally curious people will all have an awesome time!

When we emailed Edith we told her a bit about our interests and she gave us some options and used that to plan an awesome experience. During the tour she was very knowledgeable and approachable and willing to go with the flow as we had tons of questions and thoughts at the market and while cooking. It was a great and joyful learning experience.

We learned so much about the vegetables, fruits, meats, bulk dry goods, tofu, noodles, etc. and systems at the wet market. We then went back to Edith’s house and cooked dumplings from scratch, learning how to make the filling flavorful with a base recipe and then talking about options to recreate different options at home, and learning how to wrap and steam the dumplings. We also made a very simple yet flavorful kale dish and a stir fry with familiar (carrots, mushrooms, ginger) vegetables and unfamiliar vegetables (Chinese cauliflower, bitter melon, mountain yam, jade melon) and spongy tofu. It was amazing to try so many vegetables that are not familiar to us and experience how to choose them, prepare them, and cook them. Edith showed us how to make simple sauces with a couple ingredients to enhance the flavor of our vegetables.

Our experience was enjoyable in person as a way to better understand and enjoy the culture, customs, and HK experience. We also are able to apply what we learned to our home cooking. My friend is now more confident to shop at wet markets and prepare food here and I’m excited to go home and prepare my US vegetables in new and different ways.

I highly recommend Local Cooking Experience Hong Kong for both visitors and those living in Hong Kong!! Edith is amazing! The tour is customizable and so fun and informative!

Wow! Thanks for such a detailed review! I am tickled that you enjoyed our time cooking together so much! In fact, I am still loving that flowering cauliflower we stir fried. Were you really able to grow it yourself back in the USA? Edith - LCE

Hello everyone!

I'm a French guy currently interning in Hong Kong, and last weekend I took part in this cooking class with a close friend. In a few words: it was exceptional. It was originally supposed to last three hours, but we ended up leaving after 5 hours!

The course itself was very enriching and very interesting. Not only did I learn a lot about Chinese cuisine and gastronomy, but also about Hong Kong's eating habits and customs. I highly recommend selecting the option with the visit to the wet market, which allowed me (as a Westerner) to discover many typically Asian foods I did even know the existence of.

And then, how could I not mention Edith? Over and above her deep love of steaming and her infinite knowledge of Chinese cuisine, she's genuinely a very interesting person, with lots to say and a great sense of humor.

Honestly, go for it with your eyes closed: send her an e-mail, you won't regret it. Edith is not no 1 in Hong Kong for nothing: she deserves this rank more than anyone.

We had a lovely time in our private cooking experience. After meeting near the station, Edith took us to the local wet market and gave us a tour, introducing a number of delicacies I’d either never noticed before and frankly been too scared to ask about. It’s not the usual wet market, it’s renovated, well lit and spotless. The produce is wonderful. She showcased a deep knowledge of local produce and encouraged us to try a number of new things and trying to educate us on prices.

We made our way to her flat to prepare the food and cook. It was easy under Edith’s guidance and we chatted, sharing our experiences of Hong Kong while having some drinks, cooking and laughing.

We made dumplings, Mapo tofu and a noodle dish. All were excellent. Edith gave us tonnes of tips for cooking in a Chinese style and let us try lots of different products, packing our bags with dried goods and other products as we left.

Edith makes you feel relaxed. Her English is perfect, and the whole experience is fun, educational, meaningful and delicious. Plus it’s BYOB. Would thoroughly recommend for expats or overseas visitors who want a real taste of local cooking and dining.

Where to begin? My class with Edith is quickly becoming the highlight of an amazing trip to Hong Kong. From the start, Edith went above and beyond by agreeing to a dish that was very important to me that was not on her regular menu. She put extra hours of labor and research in before we even met, which was both unexpected and deeply appreciated. Thanks to her efforts, I feel more confident than ever that I'll be able to recreate it at home.

Although that situation is unique and we planned it a few months in advance, it quicky became clear that Edith excells at adapting her class to the personalized needs of her students. From making sure everyone got to try vegetables they'd never seen before to trying medicinal teas for someone who asked about them, Edith has a clear and evident delight in teaching. She's also witty, talented, and a gracious host--what a wonderful way to spend a morning in Hong Kong!

I reccomend Edith's class to anyone who wants to take all this delicious food home with them.

As a couple we had an amazing time with Edith!

Her incredible knowledge made for a really insightful tour of the wet market. We also appreciated seeing the ingredients we sourced in the market being used in the cooking later on. Very interesting seeing Edith interacting with the local vendors and acquiring their seasonal produce.

The cooking was very engaging and we received knowledge on the cooking techniques as well as applicable substitutes we could incorporate into our own cooking once we got home.

Edith was incredibly generous with her time also accommodating any queries we had.

The food was stunning and we were delighted to receive anything we didn't have space to finish in containers for later on that day!

Incredible experience, thank you again Edith!

The relax atmosphere and the flexibilty of Edith on the dishes we want to learn to make beforehand set the tone for a great morning learning how to make Siu Mai and Char Siu ! We were invited to Edith’s home and were given a very hands-on lesson on how to make open and closed dumplings, full of practical tips , divided between a preparation of all dishes in the living room and a session in the kitchen pan frying and steaming and also roasting the excellent char siu in Edith’s oven . It gave us , a HK based family for years , a very authentic experience with Ediths excellent English as the easy way to access it. Great fun and to be recommended !

Thank you for bringing along the entire family. Each and every one of you was so much fun to teach! A class I shan't forget! Remember to bring the 'kids' along for another lesson when they come back to Hong Kong to visit! I would love to see how they each tweaked the char siu recipe into their own version. Edith - LCE

We 100% enjoyed our first hand Cantonese cooking experience. From first contact till the good bye Edith was a fabulous organizer, host, cook, teacher and person.
We aligned on three dishes upfront and Edith is very accommodating to all kind of tastes:-)

We met at the wet market where she explained how it works, what to look out for and what/how to buy.
Then the cooking starts... With her enthusiasm and knowledge she guides even the purest beginners to a nicely shaped dumpling :-D
By the way she convinced me (a non fish eater) of eating fish, the steamed fish was amazing!

What rounded the whole experience is the nice and joyful conversation about food, cooking, life in general and Cantonese/Chinese habits and culture.

I can highly recommend for tourists but also people living in Hong Kong to engage in this Cantonese home cooking experience.

Edith's Local Cooking Experience was a highlight of my two years in Hong Kong. She answered all our questions, taught us a few Cantonese phrases, and let us choose veggies in the market to cook with. We loved her flexibility and breadth of knowledge.

She is passionate about vegetables, community, and helping you build skills you can use everyday in the kitchen. I've already added more ginger to most everything I'm cooking and my friend headed back to the US with a tall stack of bamboo steamers.

I highly recommend Edith's Local Cooking Experience. I'll be back with more visitors!
