- markitikiOrlando, Florida694 contributionsCould spend the day here!Vast site that offers incredible views and opportunities to explore the ruins. Easy to do on your own without a guide, if you've done some research ahead of time. The walk to/from is a bit strenuous due to the uphill nature. There is a restaurant and gift shop on site. My only disappointment were the hasslers near the entry gate.Visited November 2022Written 10 December 2022
- betteskidBoston, Massachusetts1,310 contributionsWorthwhile visiting - great views of AmmanWe enjoyed visiting this site. The ruins mostly consist of the Temple of Hercules, which is very nice, but the site is smaller and not as well preserved as many of the other sites we saw on our trip to the Middle East. That said, the views from the site are really great and it was interesting to see the old palace off to the side. The view of the Roman Amphitheater is especially good from here. There is also a small museum at the site that has a small but very nice collection that helps you understand the history of the place.Visited December 2022Written 17 December 2022
- ken jManalapan, New Jersey905 contributionsGreat intro to culture and historyThis was a good start to our Jordan group Globus tour. It has a great view and is well-explained. It is a mix of multiple civilizations and was interesting. Don't miss this. Museum in the middle needs updating but is still worth a visit.Visited December 2022Written 19 December 2022
- Roy FDoha, Qatar60 contributionsBeautiful CitadelAnother one of those easy visits you can go to even as a single traveller. The citadel is within the city proper. It is accessible by public transport like taxi and no guided tour is needed for this place. This place gives you an overview of the city of Amman which is spectacular! A must visit to go to plus you may meet the friendly cats within the citadel.Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 29 December 2022

Part of the 7th century Umayyad palace, part of temple of Hercules(and a hand and an elbow from a huge statue of him),water cisterns . SPECTACULAR view as this is sited on on of the seven hills on which Amman is built.Visited December 2022Written 18 January 2023

- HungaryHopperBirmingham, United Kingdom445 contributionsLong hilly walk upRecommend to get a taxi or walk up if you are fit enough. Takes approx two to three hours to visit and free with Jordan pass. Interesting ruin and especially on sunset can view the lovely Amman surrounding. Hercules, old temple and gateway were all found on this site. Follow map and places to see. As part of Amman sightseeing recommended. Have visitor centre with WC and gift shop upon entry/way outVisited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 February 2023
- Brun066Florence, Italy12,264 contributionsTestimony of the large time gap between the importance of Amman until the early Middle Ages and its newfound importanceAs is known, Amman is much less rich in ancient architectural monuments than the other major historical cities in the area, such as Jerusalem or Damascus. This is because when it was chosen by Emir Abdullah as the future capital of Transjordan (1921), it had ceased to be an important city since more than thousand years.. It's true that ancient Philadelphia (as Alexander the Great renamed present-day Amman) had been prosperous since at least 1200 BC, and had continued to do so under the Ammonites, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and the Umayyad Caliphate (caliphate which had established the seat of the ruler of the province, residing precisely in the Palace which is in the Citadel). But precisely the decline had begun with the end of the Umayad caliphate (750 AD); after that, only the construction of a watchtower from the Ayyubid era was reported on the Citadel, around 1220, as part of the strengthening of Islamic control in an anti-Crusader function, which was operated on the ridge left of the Jordan River (moreover, Philadelphia-Amman was under Ayyubid control as early as 1170). A watchtower, with all evidence, doesn't imply the presence of a great center of power: and it is for this reason that on the Citadel we see only important witnesses of Umayad presence, or earlier (especially Roman; and here it is inevitable to mention the Temple of Hercules). In particular I would like to point out the beauty of what remains of the Umayad palace, like the domed audience hall. It's true that it has been restored; but the elaborate decorative reliefs of the walls of the room remain intriguing, both inside and outside. They reminded me of the reliefs of the "Gate of Baghdad" in Raqqa (Syria), which I admired many years ago.Visited August 2022Written 7 February 2023
- geoff B518 contributionsBeautiful wooden dome on the old palaceGreat views from up here over the city which looks like little Lego blocks stacked on all the surrounding hills. The citadel is a great place to spend a couple of hours just wandering around. The museum was also interesting. The citadel is included if you have a Jordan pass. We took a cab from our hotel in downtown and it cost 2jod to get up there then we walked back down through the houses and stairs to get to the Roman forum.Visited February 2023Written 19 February 2023
- Jadranka PLondon, United Kingdom717 contributionsMixture of Roman and Umayyad ruinsOverlooking the old town of Amman, sitting atop the hill is the Citadel, one of the iconic historical structures of Amman, which includes the impressive Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace. I wish that we had a bit more time to explore the area. Absolutely beautiful .. There is a very interesting museum which is a worth a visit and near the entrance there is a small snack bar.Visited November 2022Written 27 February 2023

What an interesting look at what was. The Romans definitely left their mark wherever they were. It was good to browse through the on site museum. Mosaics were colourful and intricate.

The remains of the Temple of Zeus make this a very photogenic location. As the highest point in Amman, it also has a commanding view over the city. The small museum has some interesting exhibits, including some of the oldest human statues reportedly ever discovered. The cafe outside the entrance has a nice terrace and is good value for money.

I took a taxi to reach this place. I showed my Jordan Pass and easily entered . There are several signagess allng the way that explained this attraction. The most photograped area is where the remaining columns stand. Noted some tourists climbing on the ruins for better photo shots. Note that there is a small museum here to visit.
For me, I enjoyed most here are the views of the Amman down below. Due to its high location, I could see both the old and new neighborhoods of Amman.
Tip: There is a small Restroom for one’s use near the Entrance Area.

The Citadel has stunning views over the city! There is a rich history and lots of different areas of the site to see and visit. You can also climb up on most of the ruins to get up close and personal! It can get a bit crowded, so be patient. You can make this trip as short or as long as you want, depending on how much you want to see.

We walked round on our own. It would be helpful if there were more signs describing what each place was other than that it's stunning with 360 views around the city. The museum is well worth a visit as we.

Amman Citadel offers spectacular remnants of the land's rich history. The Citadel overlook the amphitheater and also the panoramic view of the city. For history enthusiasts, and want to learn more about the place, you can hire certified guides for a fee.
I do recommend visiting in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset. The city becomes golden with the mesmerizing sunset.
Free with Jordan Pass.

The Amman Citadel is home to many Jordanian artifacts. This downtown Citadel has a long history of occupation by many great civilizations.
Many empires lived here over the centuries and the Citadel of Amman is considered to be among the world's oldest continuously inhabited places.

On Fridays, the Citadel is only open from 10 am until 4 pm. Take into account that in September the days are already shorter. It's a wonderful place, take your time!!! Kind regards.

How much of time would one require to see the major attractions at the Citadel and what are they please.

The area is not so large that one can’t see everything in a three hour visit. There is an excellent, small museum that should not be missed. It should not be a problem getting a taxi back to city center. Think they close around 4 in the winter because of earlier darkness.

Abdul.

What would it cost , approximately , if I were to use a cab to do a free an easy tour from any of the centrally located hotels? Would it be cheaper than guides n tour packages?

A taxi to the citadel should cost no more than 4-5 JOD. For touring from there I would recommend looking at Lonely Planets excellent self-guided tour of Amman which is available freely (Links are not allowed here).
I used it myself and found it covered all the major landmarks. It's definitely cheaper than using a guide/tour package.
where can I park my car?

By the main entrance of the Citadel, there is a parking lot. Which its big enough & where the tourist buses do wait for their own clients. Welcome to Jordan, even i you have more doubts, please don¨t hesitate to contact me.
