We must have talked 30 pictures of the flag. It is absolutely beautiful and so majestic. The only thing that's tough is the drive up there. It is very bumpy and fairly long.

OK so it is just a flag, but it is very big, and will give you a good photo opportunity at the start of your Kyrgyzstan trip. It is right in the centre of the city on Chuy Avenue next to the White House, so you can't miss it.

Very large flag of Kyrgyzstan on a 100 meter pole in a public square complete with an honor guard. The young military men have a changing of the guard ceremony every hour on the hour and that makes this place special.

It is sad, the Kyrgyz Prez took all the GLORY we put up that FLAG there and so on. BUT, it true telling, it was the AMERICAN Embassy whom delivered that FLAG for the Kyrgyz people. BUT, you will never hear that from their Prez. How I know, I was working at the U.S. Embassy when that flag was put lift and put in from our own people and equipments.
BUT is is a really fun and up hill hiking for novice like me, just go during the warm season.

Large flag right in front of the history museum. we went around afternoon and got to see the change of guard, which is quite memorable. Other than that, good opportunity for photos.

An enormous flag, but a modern, interesting one which reflects the history of the country. Changing of the guard is hourly, probably not worth a special visit but if you happen to be there at the time its fun to watch.

Two guards in their snazzy uniforms stand totally still on either side of the flagpole. Three guards come from the building behind, goose stepping about 200 meters until reaching the flagstaff. Two replace the former guards, who goose step back with the third. No music or fanfare. It happens ever hour on the hour while it is daylight. Not spectacular, but nevertheless fun to see.

On the north side of Ala-Too square, the national flag of Kyrgyzstan waves atop the tallest flagpole in Kyrgyzstan (45 meters). The flag is 10x15 meters. The red background symbolizes valor and courage; the epic hero Manas (the warrior on the horse next to the flag) used a red banner. The word "Kyrgyz" also means red. A yellow sun with 40 rays is in the center, symbolizing the 40 tribes who united to form Kyrgyzstan. As in many cultures, the sun represents light, wealth, peace and eternity. The center of the sun has two crossing arcs of three lines each, symbolizing the tündük or crown of the traditional Kyrgyz yurt. The yurt represents the paternal house, hospitality and solidarity of the people living in Kyrgyzstan. So in very compact symbology, the national flag represents the social philosophy and cohesion of the Kyrgyz people. The flag was adopted on 3 March 1992, after Kyrgyzstan became independent of the former Soviet Union. There is a morning ceremony to raise the flag, and a guardhouse with two soldiers at the foot of the flagpole while it is flying. Every hour on the hour the guard is changed in an impressive (although small) ceremony involving military precision and goose-stepping. Cafes, restaurants and shopping are found around Ala-Too square, and there are public toilets in nearby Panfilov and Oak Parks.
