This big square you will visit for sure while in the city, Here you will find a museum, a statue of Manas the Great, fountain. Many state-organized celebrations are here. Also changing of guards can be seen here.

Having visited the square, I got the impression that I was in the USSR. 😌
The area is quite large, but since it was very hot outside, there were almost no people, and there weren’t that many cars on the main street.
On the square there is a fountain, monuments, a museum, and we managed to catch the changing of the guard.

Spacious and all encompassing historical square that can impress any casual visitor. I went round this square many a times during my three days stay visiting museums, parks, historical monuments and a variety of eateries. Best place to spend time and energise oneself. The Kyrgyz national flag in the square in front of the museum and by the side of the tall statue of freedom is a major attraction.

Disappointed to arrive in Bishkek to find AlaToo Square completely cordoned off and under renovation. Not part of it, all of it.
You can walk around and look at the world from behind a fence but as of August 2024 you cannot access any of it.
It's necessary of course, but bad timing for me!

Ala-Too Square is the central square of Bishkek. Along its perimeter are the State Historical Museum, the People's Friendship Monument, Oak Park with the Open-Air Sculpture Museum and St. Nicholas Church.
A wonderful place, next to a cafe and a historical museum. We managed to watch the changing of the guard and go to the museum and take a walk in the park.
You can even see the mountains!
Everything was impressive! Atmospheric!
A wonderful place and a mighty monument!
I recommend visiting.
I took a Yandex taxi from the Globus shopping center and paid 196 s.

The central square of Bishkek serves as a place for state events and celebrations and includes many monuments. Of note is the statute of Manas regarded as a national hero. Next to Manas is the official flagpole of the Kyrgyz Republic. Be sure to be there to watch the changing of the guards (which occurs hourly).

I visited Ala-Too Square on my recent trip of Kyrgyzstan. It is a famous square in the heart of Bishkek. It includes the statue of Manas, the large national flag, the History Museum, and a very nice fountain area. This is definitely an area one should visit if visiting Bishkek.

I hired a taxi and went to the Ala-Too Square. It was a gorgeous sunny day in July 2019 but slightly hot. The driver started explaining this place and first thing I noticed was the statue of a soldier on a horse. So I asked the driver what it signifies. He said it is a statue of a Kyrgyz army commander who led his soldiers to fight against Chinese and he was victorious. To commemorate his victory, the Government built the monument in his memory. The name of the commander was Manas (spelt Mahas in Kyrgyz). To honour him, the Bishkek International Airport has been named after him.
In the same place I saw the National Museum laid in front of neat and beautiful garden landscape. The gorgeous fountain splashed water nearby.
Walking further in the same Square, around 10 am, I witnessed the change of guard. Their steps were precise and walked like German soldiers - throwing legs high in the air. I was told that the change of guard occurres every one hour.
Across the road was a beautiful building which is Ministry of Agriculture. In front of the building are few fountains splendidly surrounded by beautiful flowers among which I could see orange colour Mary-golds. Nice spot for photo and vediography.
Entrance is free. Take water with you. Enjoy.

The changing of the guards is such a unique and cool thing. The guards stay still for hours each day. The plaza around it is also beautiful with the iconic statue and the giant tall flag!

I agree, Marshutka's are the best and cheapest way of travel. Did only two countries (Almaty-Bishkek), both are safe.

Fellow Trippers,
Salaam!
Please, does anyone know the schedule for the changing of the guard in September?
For example, is it every hour on the hour? Every two hours on the hour? At very specific times?
Trying to get clarity on this.
Thanks in advance! :-)

I was told it is every hour on the hour.
