Exploring Hawaii’s Big Island can be a big undertaking, but it doesn’t have to be. Avoid the stress of planning out all the details with this guided tour that includes round-trip transport, lunch, snacks, and bottled water for your convenience. Because there’s minimal walking distance during this tour, it’s perfect for people of all ages and fitness levels. Plus, if the weather gets dreary, rain gear is provided to keep you dry.

This is about a 20-mile drive from the VNP entrance down to the sea. “Otherworldly” is definitely the best word I can think of to describe this, and it’s a must-do while in Hawaii. First you’ll pass the Thurston Lava Tube, then a number of old volcanic craters. Then you’ll drive through massive lava fields. Eventually the road winds all the way down to the ocean, descending 4,000 ft, where you can see the Holeil Sea Arch. No lava in 2021 though. Also, it’s pretty cold and windy down there. I can’t imagine there are many other places on Earth that look like this. Bonus tip: in the afternoon it usually gets cold and rainy up at the top of the park where the visitor center and the Kilauea Overlook are. Since this is lower elevation, it will probably still be sunny down towards the ocean, so you can plan activities in this area as an afternoon escape.

If it’s raining up at the crater then keep driving down to the sea for some sun . Plus so much to see along the way

This is a wonderful scenic route that will occupy about 4 hours of your time. If it’s raining, keep on driving, chances are it will change as you drop in altitude towards the ocean. Plenty of scenic pullouts and hikes to satisfy everyone. Despite continuous light rain, we still managed to hike to the petroglyphs and the sea arch. Plenty of other worthwhile quick pullovers for photo opportunities. And lots of native Nene’s along the road!

The Chain of Craters Road is open and well paved. There are plenty of markers showing earlier lava flows. Very few visitors because of covid so not much traffic.

It was amazing to see how man is insignificant to the power of nature. We were in awe of the beauty and destruction that resulted from the 2018 lava flow. It was an easy drive, but might be kind of boring for kids- so take a lot of pit stops and get out and climb around. Also, make sure you have drinking water with you- not many opportunities to stop for refreshments.
