Of course the river itself is wonderful if you add a bit of history and the bike trails and walking paths it's a wonderful afternoon.

Went to canoing with my son and his girlfriend and love the scenic views that overlooked the river. It was a bit dirty but knew not to jump in! look of the Kennedy center and the Jefferson memorial...nothing like it!
We drove over the Potomac several times during our 3 days near Washington DC. Earlier in the week, we were at Harper's Ferry and saw where it meets the Shenandoah River. I'm kind of fascinated with rivers & bridges so enjoyed it all.
Walked across from Arlington cemetery too Lincoln memorial and looked down at the Pontomac ,and up at the constant stream of aircraft coming in low along the river,was lots of rowing going on too which was cool,the area along the basin is a lovely walk...More
Famous river, nice to look at...while crossing on a bridge. If in Washington metro, you will have a chance to see it.
