- Beth B2 contributionsMy favorite museum in DCI could spend all day in this museum. I am particularly interested in folk and outsider art and this is really the only option for that in the city but it’s a fantastic collection. In particular I could spend 3 hours alone at The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly. The portrait half of the museum is lovely too, but I am more interested in the American art side until you get to the higher levels of the portraits. The building itself is also a work of art. It’s just so stunning. And the room with the…I don’t know what to call it, it’s not archives but there are shelves and shelves and drawers of things to look at and explore with miniatures and sculptures and small paintings. It’s an incredibly intimate chance to interact with art.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 April 2023
- Stephen BPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania33 contributionsWe had a private tour, but it overlapped with public hoursWe had a tour that began an hour before opening time. But that hardly mattered: soon the gallery was filled with others enjoying the same space and exhibits. My favorite was the room with portraits and busts of Washington and Lincoln that I'd never seen before.Visited April 2023Written 4 May 2023
- ElvisAndrusArlington, Texas820 contributionsOne of my favourite places on the planetLove this place, I have been to Washington four times and I have gone each time. A good portion is rotating exhibits and some of the collection feels like visiting an old friend. I love the courtyard in the middle although it is most special on a cold day. I like the variety and I like what the portraits make me think about. If I can describe a msueum as confident I would do so. A change to my eye was the inclusion of many more Indigenous pieces since my last visit, a welcome addition!Visited March 2023Written 5 May 2023
- Clare H31 contributionsTerrific art - very poor cafeFine museum. Well worth taking a few hours to visit - the special exhibitions can be riveting. One note of caution: the cafe is astonishingly expensive and the food poor quality for the cost. Museum of Art cafeteria is a fantastic alternative - highly recommended.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 June 2023
- 907blakedTampa, Florida1,449 contributionsBig museum combined with American Art MuseumWe enjoyed our visit here to the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum. The portraits downstairs of the famous Americans were excellent, andthe associated biographies were well done. The section on American Presidents was also well done. It was nice that it wasn't crowded. No admission cost.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 June 2023
- Southwest_GauchoLake Havasu City, Arizona1,126 contributionsPresidential Portraits are worth a stopOnly had time to make it through the Presidential portraits and a fraction of other displays but it was well done. Everything was logical on how it was displayed in various rooms and there was a good flow to the art. I'm not a huge art fan but the works that are in here are impressive. I would return in the future to see more.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 July 2023
- jaauocNew York City, New York117 contributionsA wonderful and quiet place to visit, off the beaten pathWe wanted to visit somewhere different from the usual tourist mainstays of DC and this was a lovely place to visit. The portraits of prominent Americans fascinated all ages in my family from teen to boomer. We were there for 2.5 hours and still didn’t absorb everything. Definitely worth a return visit.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 July 2023
- flo220New York City, New York334 contributionsEnjoyable Smithsonian art museumThe National Portrait Gallery shares its building with the Smithsonian American Art Museum. I enjoyed the Portrait Gallery more -- probably because I am more interested in history than art and was able to learn more from the portraits. Museum is small enough to be very doable in a few hours. Free to enter. Cafeteria in the middle of the building is very pleasant.Visited August 2022Travelled with familyWritten 27 July 2023
- phvi2617Anaheim, California562 contributionsAmerican art and historyI only had enough time to see the Presidents exhibition and really wish I could have gone through the entire gallery as well as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, which resides in the same building. In addition to the iconic portraits there is also thoughtful commentary on the history of each presidency. It wasn't very crowded and is a great place to visit if you appreciate art and history.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 29 July 2023
- Bruno V1,019 contributionsInteresting exhibitions near ChinatownA bit away from the National Mall, this museum offers a permanent collection of portraits of people in American History, and temporary exhibitions. The inner patio is quite impressive. The building is a bit confusing in its structure. There was a temporary exhibition on American imperialism. Quite interesting and well documented.Visited August 2023Written 23 August 2023

If you can snag a tour with a curator (on occasion), these are totally worth making a special trip. The curator tour I attended gave some background to the modern portraits that was interesting and provided depth I didn't realize from a casual perusal.

The National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum is off the Mall, at Gallery Place, large and easily accessible. When we are in town for the weekend and looking for a place to spend the afternoon, this is our default choice. Both the permanent collections and the special exhibits are excellent. The building itself is wonderful. And the neighborhood has many excellent choices for lunch to accompany your visit - our favorite is Gordon Biersch in an old impressive-looking bank right across the street.

They have an area which looks like you'r outdoors but you'r not. They play nice music that you can listen to while sitting and relaxing. Between 6:30 and 7 P.M. they have what is called a Pop-Quiz segment. Great fun!

The National Portrait Gallery is actually a combination of 2 Smithsonian museums and takes quite some time to go through. We especially loved the "indoor courtyard" area and the gift shop there. Right across the street is the International Spy museum. If you still have feet to walk on, try walking around Chinatown as there are plenty of places to eat.

This place always has great temporary exhibits. Plus the presidents portraits are here. All look great except for Kennedy's and Clinton's. Theirs just looks weird. But dont let me decide for you.

Often missed, the double museums of the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum are well worth a visit for both art lovers and history buffs. The two museums are connected by a spectacular covered courtyard. The wonderful Portrait Gallery Bldg. is a venue to walk through the faces of American history and the American Art Museum houses everything from photographs of Washington during the Civil War to interactive contemporary works. They often have great temporary exhibits. Don't miss the gift shop, one of the best in DC. But eat elsewhere. The food in the cafe is very limited and expensive for a sandwich place.

Fantastic museum that is attached to National Museum of American Art. The Presidents exhibit is always fun to see and no matter how many times I go through it, I always find something new to love.

His 3 portraits of the Grand Canyon, which took years to paint, are breathtaking. This is an all-day museum to make sure that you can see everything and take it all in.

Take a look at the website and determine what you absolutely don’t want to miss. If you arrive a little before the museum opens, yo should not have an isssue with crowds. The presidential portrait exhibit is excellent. Be sure to visit the room where Michelle Obama’s portrait is located!

No wait to enter. I’ve seen a 10-15 minute wait to stand in front of President Obama’s portrait (Weekend), Mrs Obama’s portrait was just crowded.

Hi there :
You should take a look at the National Portrait Gallery's own website.
You'll find quite a lot of helpful information under the VISIT - ACCESSIBILITY section, including the following : "For your comfort, wheelchairs can be borrowed by asking the security officer stationed at each museum entrance".
[It might also be a good idea to "double-check" wheelchair availability with the museum in advance of your intended visit, using the Phone and/or Email details on their website]
Enjoy your visit to this wonderful museum!
How long did it take you?

I went on a Monday, not a Saturday or Sunday. I walked right in, upstairs to see Michelle Obama on the 3rd floor, then down to the 2nd floor to see her husband. Easy breezy.

How far is the National Portrait Gallery from the Convention Center? Is it walkable from hotel/center to the gallery? (Coming to DC in a few weeks for a conference and would love to slip away to visit the Gallery.) Thank you!

As mentioned above the fastest way to get there would be to take the Metro, otherwise it's a fairly short (10 minutes or so) walk.
Do you need tickets in advance?
Frederic S

No, you can simply walk in. If you visit during the week it is fairly quiet and even on weekends, it doesn't feel that busy (it is so vast that you don't notice the crowds!). There is no charge, unless there is a specific exhibition. I recommend half a day at least to see it all or simply go back the following day for a couple of hours. Do not miss the presidential portrait gallery and the contemporary American artists on the top floor. Enjoy!
