Elephant seals!
Feb 2021
We were trying to decide the best place to go see elephant seals during mating season and ended up picking Drakes Beach, which did not disappoint! We were able to be quite close (50ish feet) from some of the seals, which are enormous. There were also some extremely helpful and knowledgeable rangers and volunteers hanging around to answer questions. We also went to the elephant seal overlook at Chimney Rock which was also very cool but much farther away from the seals, although you could see more of them. If I were to go to only one I would pick Drake's Beach.

Amazing spot
Dec 2020 • Solo
There are so many reasons to come to Drake's Beach. It's a beautiful geologic site on the end of Point Reyes. It's an amazing Beach with some ice cold ocean water. And it's a beautiful place to hike and walk.

You'll find tons of sand dollars on the beach.

Read up on the geology of Point Reyes.

Nothing can beat nature. You don't need to spend to enjoy your day. Have fun!

We hung out in Drake Beach for a while. Well, if you say an hour and a half is not a while then yeah sure we were here for a long time. After seeing the male elephant seals, we went a little up to a trail on the right which shows the ocean in a different view. No sense in going up a little more so we went back down and as I wanted to go home my husband insisted on we stayed and voila, male elephant seals fought many times as I recorded it <3

Great views of elephant seals lounging on the beach
Sep 2019
Drive past Drakes Beach down to the historic Point Reyes Lifeboat Station and Chimney Rock. Park your car and walk down to the elephant seal lookout where you can see the seals lounging on the beach.

Sir Francis Drake once walked here
May 2019 • Couples
Believed to have been visited by Sir Francis Drake in 1579, this 4-mile wide beach is great for walking or just watching. This beach is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore and is a National Historic Landmark District. Located off CA 1. There are park service buildings on site; large parking lot.

Nice Beach with Amenities
Jun 2019 • Couples
Drake’s beach is nice and not as wide open as North or South beach. However it does provide some amenities as there is a visitor’s center with huge restrooms to accommodate larger crowds. There is also a cafeteria that is open on weekends to feed the little ones when you run out of food.

This is a more popular beach for all the reasons stated and is a good balance between finding a quiet spot for yourself and being able to get a nice hot cup of tea when you need to.

Stunning Coastline North of the Bay Area
May 2019 • Couples
If you’d like to appreciate the sheer cliffs and stunning coastline north of the Bay Area, a detour to Drake’s Beach is a must. Who knows you may get lucky with a sighting of a molting elephant seal. Summer can be foggy and windy though so come prepared!
