About
Until 2006 this southern California canyon oasis property was a commercial trout farm and hatchery. It was added to Wilderness Preserve properties. The volume of water and oasis potential are matched only by the Agua Caliente Tribe's Palm Canyon Preserve. The vegetation in the Whitewater preserve is more mountain riparian. It is a natural treasure.

GREAT HIKING TRAILS
Mar 2018
The hiking trails at Whitewater Wilderness Preserve offer options for all ages and fitness levels. For great view of the Canyon below you can do the Canyon View Loop Trail. This would be considered a moderate level as there is a gradual incline on the switchbacks until you reach the top. Once there you will have some awesome views. This trail is about 3.5 miles. The hike to Red Dome is an easy 4 mile round trip hike with great views of the Canyon as you hike along the river. All trails at Whitewater are well marked. We have done both of these trails several times over the last few years. Each time we have seen Big Horn Sheep as well as some wonderful wild flowers, trees and shrubs. There is a nice parking lot at the rangers station where you can get trail maps and have your questions answered by well informed rangers on staff. There are several very clean bathrooms in the station as well as a water fountain.

Loved this hike!

I did the Canyon Loop and it took almost 2 hours with some stops for the amazing views. I started my hike at 9am and it was hot, so take twice the water you think you might need. No signage after you cross the second little bridge across the water. Go left and you’ll find the trail that leads to the switchback. I ended up going right, up along the water for a while which was the wrong way!

I saw no one along the loop trail, so great it’s not too busy.

Next time, I’ll do the extended 2km trail along the base of the valley.

Nice cool wading pool near the Ranger station to refresh the feet!

This place gets 5/5 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄

Great out of the way preserve near Palm Springs
Mar 2018
This is a lovely preserve, built on the site of an old fish hatchery, I believe. There are walking trails, a visitors center, etc. We saw mountain goats hopping along on what looked like an almost vertical cliff. The opnly downside is that there is no food available. The closest place to get something to eat is about a20 minute drive away, so bring a picnic.

Whitewater

Whitewater preserve was a pleasant surprise! We were not prepared to do the loop this time, but have added it to our list for our next visit. We did take a short walk to the river and walked around the ranger station. It was very peaceful and pretty! Worth a stop!

We loved this treasure to hike in. Very diverse ecosystems, beautiful vistas, friendly staff at the greeting house, clean bathrooms. Only a short drive from downtown Palm Springs

This is a gorgeous place, we walked around the visitor centre, the beautiful scenery was outstanding and the absolute perfect place to have a picnic. We went for a great walk, I would recommend walking shoes and just take your time to enjoy the place.

Whitewater Preserve is a nice day trip
May 2017 • Friends
Some easy walks around the visitor;s center. Shaded picnic area. Water is high enough that the wading pool is full. River is running and fun to walk along. There is supposed to be a CO area just before you enter the preserve, I have not looked for it as yet. Cooler than Palm Springs.

Desert flowers
Apr 2017 • Couples
5 mile road in was all flowers, just gorgeous. At the end was this beautiful park with lots of hiking trails . The pacific crest trail runs through here. We hiked along the river hoping to do a loop trail but the river was running so fast that we could not find a safe place to cross, return walk was still worth it. Go early, we got there at 8.30 and parking lot was almost full , at 11 when we left there were cars lined up the road for about a mile. This was a Sunday also, so many young families. Lots of cars parked along road as people were walking among the flowers

So Beautiful
Mar 2017 • Friends
Currently covered in flowers and the presence of water makes it even more lovely. Beautiful at any time. The scenery on the 5 mile road in is also gorgeous. Perfect for a picnic , walk, or hike. Great way to see the desert and not far from Palm Springs.
