A monument dedicated to a girl whom Simon Dach the famous poet fell in love with in front of the theatre square. Was ordered to be removed by hitler as he was giving out a speech behind the sculpture, with people being distracted by the sculpture instead of paying attention on him, but now restored, it's not the original one but the story still lasts.

CMV’s cruise ship Astoria docked at Klaipeda - third largest city and only seaport in Lithuania - on a sunny Sunday morning for our first visit to a new country. Klaipeda is a vital transport hub with awesome road/rail/river/sea links between East and West on a 24/7 basis, as the city offers one of the few ice-free ports in the far north of Europe. This prime position attracted trade - and merchants - from global trading nations especially the intrepid British with their huge sea-going tradition. So many came, saw and liked Klaipeda that they settled and even became celebrated mayors of the city eg Mr Simpson, Mr McClean and Mr Muttray. Because of our interest in heritage and genealogy we chose the 3 hour coach and walking tour “British History of Klaipeda”.
We were driven around the city to glimpse the elegant areas where many sea captains and rich merchants built homes. Classy Liepu Street for instance, had its own regulations to be observed by users: no ‘large’ goods could be carried or moved through the Street; water or other liquids could not be sprayed from the houses onto the Street. The site of the huge English ‘Gothic’ Church with its 4 towers was pointed out, but the building is long gone.
We were then dropped off in the main square, in front of the Town Hall with its small statue of Annchen Von Tharau, a figure from literature. All I remember from the guide’s chat here was that during the annexation of Lithuania by Germany, ending in 1945, Hitler himself planned to address the citizens from the balcony of the building. But there was a problem! The little girl - Annchen statue - would have her back to the speaker, this was disrespectful, so the statue must go! “Oh no she mustn’t!’ said the citizens! And clearly she didn’t as she still stands there facing away from the building! I missed the end of the guide’s story so I still don’t know whether Hitler did or didn’t speak from the balcony? Perhaps someone will enlighten me?
We were then led through the square, but stopped suddenly. It seems that some tourists had requested a ‘comfort stop’ and were queueing next to a shop which sold amber, jewellery and fashions with 40% reductions! Wow! Stunning linen shifts and jackets, scarves and gorgeous jewellery at amazing prices. Just on the point of buying clothes for my granddaughters, the call came that we had to carry on our walk to the Arts Centre for the folkloric show. Along more cobbles, through a small park with lovely sculptures scattered around - coloured eggs, animals - Klaipeda’s spaces are beautifully curated! Then we all entered the pink Arts Centre, went upstairs and found ourselves in a large room with a roof of wooden struts and in front of us a group of mature ladies and gentlemen who would entertain us fabulously in a superb folkloric show. Oh the resonance with which they played, sang and laughed! They so enjoyed themselves —— and so did we! We snapped them with ‘phone and camera; we giggled, clapped and whooped; the ambiance was astonishing! Probably the best Sunday morning on a cruise ever spent! When we left, we stood outside and the “gentlemen of the orchestra” rushed out, bearing their instruments, obviously on their way to another gig! So we clapped them again! If you visit Klaipeda, don’t miss the folkloric show. It’s magical.
Then back to the square - just time for a coffee before the bus picked us up. And what about the shopping I’d planned to do? Sorry, the spirit was so willing, but the legs were too weak. But next time ———. We’ll certainly be back to lovely, lively Lithuania!

During a guided tour you will find Ännchen on the Opera place in front of a building, where Hitler held a speech; therefor Ännchen turned her back to the balcony.

Do not overthink this. It's a statue to someone 99.9% have never heard of. See it during your walking tour of then Old Town. The handicraft market is held around this Statue.

By the way, on the wall on fountain, you can find story about Annchen. Strongly recommended to book a tour the get full info about the sculpture. Sculpture it self is quite small, but looks just great!

Its the old theatre building where Vagner performed and Hitler gave a speech from the balcony when the Germans took over.
Not much else in the square.

I wouldn't say it is anything special. We walked by it, didn't feel like giving it much attention. If you like sculpture hunting, there is plenty to do in the town.
