We visited this place 12 years ago when on holiday with our kids, so excited to come back after all these years, and so relieved it is still as good as we remembered (if not better!). Always loved the Animal Attic, great homage to the...More

Actually, we attended a wedding breakfast here and we were so impressed with the meal, venue and the ability of staff to hold a classy event in a Museum! Great food, friendly people and all in the midst of beauty and history.

It has one of the largest collections in New Zealand, nature, culture and science. Plenty to see and do for adults and children.

Really interesting museum to visit, detailing the Maori culture and the invasion of settlers. Some amazing portraits of the people to start colonising New Zealand, sadly also much of the havoc through deforestation and introduction of predators

Spent a while at the museum but didn't quite have time to see all the galleries. There was an interesting display on the stairs about Sir Edmund Hillary conquering Everest. We liked the Maori and maritime galleries. We particularly enjoyed the planetarium experience (which there...More

Only had an hour here before closing. It was a fascinating museum and we only managed to dip a toe into its contents. We will definitely come again and set aside several hours. The key focus is the history of early settlers. The photo gallery...More

Our hosts had mentioned that this museum is well worth a visit, and we were not disappointed. It gives a superb insight into the natural history of the area, its industries and its peoples. It also extends into an anthropological exploration of a great many...More

I am just not a museum person but this was part of our cruise excursion. Our young guide was informative on the tour she gave us on the early history. If you like museums this place is probably a must.

Though the museum's exhibits could use a bit of freshening up, the docents are excellent, and the free public Wifi here is the only one that my android phone was able to connect to in all of New Zealand.
