Christchurch-Akaroa Road, Christchurch 7581, New Zealand
We went there just to visit Hinewai Reserve but without good signposting couldn't find it. So we just did a walk around Arkaroa and then drove the tourist drive. We stopped so many times for photos. I honestly feel we could spend a few days...More
So close to Christchurch, yet couldn't be further away as an experience. Beautiful 'french village', plenty of things to do on the water and trekkiing through the hills, or just great for coffee and food. On the way there, don't forget Little river; great gallery.
So much to do. Akaroa..quaint French town. Hilltop Tavern. Great food but indifferent service, overall worth a visit. Lots of littlebays all the way around. Take the Summit Rd from Hilltop for fantastic views.
We use the Akaroa - Christchurch Rd every couple of months in the summer and love the trip knowing we will be in our piece of paradise as soon as we reach Akaroa. There are so many interesting things to see along the way and...More
I have been to banks Peninsula quite a few times, ranging from day trips to training courses. The best experience I have had was sleeping in the car and waking up to the view over one of the bays in the morning.
Best to visit ere in Summer as the draw card is the water - lots of beautiful bays with plenty of things to do in the sea eg swim, kayak, yacht, wildlife tours etc. We went in winter and many things were closed, but still...More
The road to Akaroa from Christchurch is good. Coffee and Food at Tai Tapu cafe and Little River cafe is stunning. The gallery at Little River has great things for the tourist or local. The views from the hill Top are amazing.
An area of great beauty with a variety of options with many walking tracks and great restaurants. Lots of activities in Akaroa including water based from marine watch to sailing and canoes. Often local production at the theater as well as a small cinema. Only...More

Takes about 1.5hrs driving to get to Akaroa the main town on Banks Peninsula. Much to be seen on the way with the Maori museum at Okains bay well worth the visit. Good to learn some of the history of this spectacular part of NZ. To me booking a nights accommodation would be the go. Plenty of options and you can do the tourist route on the way back next day..

We had a camper van for six weeks and really enjoyed our travels. We used a site on Banks Peninsular for our last couple of nights - Akaroa Top 10 site. Not cheap but very well catered and in a great position above the town. It is a beautiful area with some good walks along the coast and up in the hills. The drive takes about 2.5 hours and the roads are quite narrow and bendy, but with fantastic views. so probably not great if it's dark for a first drive. If you are into bird watching, the area around Lake Ellesmere was full of wildlife when we were there in Nov.
