About
The area of 'La valle' is located between S.Feliciano, S.Savino e S.Arcangelo in the township of Magione. It covers an area of approximately 1000 hectars, occuping one of the most interesting naturalistic section of the entire regional natural park of lake Trasimeno. The lake, which covers124 kmq, is the fourth-largest lake in terms of surface area, with a perimeter of 54 kmq and a maximum depth of just 6.70 m. Among all the lake environments, the most interesting and representative one is undoubtedly marked by the wetlands, with extensive reedbeds that grow close to the banks of the lake and characterised by their shallow waters. This area shelter and feed an incredible number of animal species and birds in particular, many of which have great scientific value. In fact, the lake Trasimeno is set in a strategic location along the flyways of many bird species distinctive of wetlands: many of them stop here for breeding, others for wintering and others for integrating the food reserves during the journey, so that every season of the year offers different and interesting observations. The oasis is open to guided tours of both individuals and groups at a very cheap price.

We had a great morning being shown around the reserve, which was interesting and educational, particularly seeing birds ringed. We saw a good variety of birds, ducks and waders including flamingo, squacco heron, plover, sandpiper and gadwall amongst others. Worth a visit whether you're an avid birdwatcher or just an interest in nature.
Thank you for the tour.

Natural conservation area managed by a natural science co-op.
If you go on Saturday, after a guided bird-watching session, you will see bird ringing too. Recommended.

Yes, the boardwalk is still closed but this is due to high water levels so cannot be avoided. On our first visit we did see some birds but the second was too windy. We were provided with excellent binoculars and the two hides along the bank still provide opportunities to see birds in their natural habitat.

I visited in late September 2016, and unfortunately the main boardwalk is still closed as noted in the previous review. Nonetheless I still able to observe and photograph Great Egret, Little Egret, Great Crested Grebes with young, Grey Heron, Great Cormorant, large numbers of Eurasian coots and a variety of gulls. Clearly it would be a more enjoyable experience if the main boardwalk was open, but it was still a worthwhile trip for me.
I also did some more bird watching from some of the laybys at the side of the road as I continued to drive around the lake [clockwise].

The bad news is that there is really only one decent bird hide. The good news is that it is some way out on the lake, accessed by a board walk, in a reed bed that it is teeming with bird life. The bad news is that, as I write in mid-July, the board walk is closed, so there is no access to the main bird hide. There is one bird hide screen up on the bank facing the reed bed where most of the interesting birds seem to be, but it feels like a long way from the action, and it mainly gives a good view of the hide where we really wanted to be.
We saw some beautiful great crested grebes engaged in their elaborate courtship dance, a kingfisher flew past, a cormorant sat on a branch sticking out of the lake drying his wings, and a white egret perched in a tree nearby preening.
They seem to have reduced the price of admission a bit to take account of the closed hide, but frankly it's a bit like buying a ticket to a major roller coaster and being offered the tea-cup ride. They should consider closing this place until the main bird hide is open again.
