This is a very interesting church as it's for both Catholics and Protestants. It is one of the biggest of this kind in Germany. The cathedral as it stands now was constructed between 1456 and 1463.
In 1523, Lutherans started preaching in the church. Since 1530, both Catholics and Lutherans have shared the cathedral.
Its most distinctive feature is the strongly protruding angulation, which is probably because the church was erected on the foundations of another church which was built around 1000.

There is dividing line in the middle for the two denominations. There is a weird kink in the building too. Peaceful

We wanted to see the inside of the Der Dom St. Petri zu Bautzen, but it was closed for renovations. As we passed the church, we noticed a door that was wide open. Inside it welcomed us to go up the bell tower. Even though the stairs were made of wood and were creaking, we took the opportunity of this adventure. As we got higher, the stairs became more narrow. Eventually we ended up at a toll place where we had to pay 2 Euros per person. Not too bad!

We were allowed to enter the bell tower. It had open windows all around the bell and wow what a great place to take pictures of this town!

We stayed there for 40 minutes, as we were slowing down on the narrow stairs, the wife of the one in charge passed us by in supper speed. She was over 65 and quite full with energy. She was faster than us! Wow!

This was truly a surprise to find this place open and we certainly enjoyed it!

Must see in Bautzen, church shared by two Christian denominations (Catholic and Protestant). Beautiful gothic structure with interesting interior, located on a pieceful square in the very center of the city. Excellent place for meditation or relax during the day.

St. Peter's Cathedral is an interdenominational church. It is among the oldest and largest Simultaneum churches in Germany. Located in the heart of the city's "Old Town", the church and the square is a major tourist attraction. The church is well-maintained and a must-see.

Besides the uniqueness of a church being shared by two Christian faiths, the Dom St. Petri is lovely inside. Sundays, visitors can view the interior after noon, following the Lutheran service (unless special awards/recognitions run late). Clear glass windows nearer the entrance yield to stained glass as one approaches the Catholic portion in the apse, where the high altar has an oil painting of St. Peter and Christ. Older crave memorials adorn the wall there as well as other oil paintings. As this is a co-cathedral (with Holy Trinity in Dresden) there is a cathedra in the sanctuary.
Be sure to look up into the vault - the crossing junctions are all painted in bright primary colors. The organ is small, but has good sound.
The exterior is fairly simple, with exposed stone for the supporting buttresses, but stuccoed walls around the windows. There is a single octagonal stone spire
