Geological Wonders!
Jul 2021
Fabulous geological wonders! The different scenery and rock formations in this area is incredible. A great area to wander around - very mucky and muddy in winter, be prepared for a filthy car afterwards, or wear your gumboots!

Loved visiting here - enjoyed the peaceful surroundings & stunning views. The rocks were so massive & interesting. Well worth a wander around.

Amazing visual spectacle

I like looking at geographical things, and these amazing rocks are really cool. It's on private farmload so you need to respect the surroundings and any animals that might be in the field (none when we visited but lots of sheep droppings so just watch where you step!).

It's a large site and hilly (surprising :) ) but you can walk around all of it and also climb on the rocks. They weren't slippery but I'd think if you visited when it was raining they might be. You need good gripping shoes.

You can definitely let your imagination run wild (and this is where some of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was filmed).

There is a toilet for anyone caught short, that is surprisingly clean (no soap though).

Only disappointing thing is that some idiots have carved their names into the rocks.

We always love coming out here it's never busy and the children enjoy climbing the rocks it seems so other worldly. Only disappointment is they seem to be getting more and more graffiti on them.

You can have a really nice walk through this place, which felt extra nice with all the sheep around in lambing season

A nice place of interest

We took an early morning drive out to look at the rocks from where part of the movie Narnia was filmed. It was enjoyable & the rock formations were quite unusual for their location plus being dramatic in size. You won’t need any more than an hour here so it’s a great place to add onto another visit during your day.

Little known place to visit

We happened on the Elephant Rocks as we traveled in the Duntroon region. It was well marked and on private ground with sheep in the pasture. People respectful of the property. Even a loo available for guests.

A friend told me about this attraction ( he has a bach nearby).
About 40 min away from Oamaru/ 20 min from Ngapara.
Easy to climb rocks, fantastic pictures.
It would be excellent for a fashion photoshoot.

Peaceful environment
Nov 2019
Elephant Rocks is unique to North Otago.
The open space is inviting to all age groups.
The rocks are fascinating and the formation creates interest in their origin.
Sheep wandering around adds to the country atmosphere.
Rock shelter is great in windy conditions.
There is so much space that it is most suitable for picnic time in the warmer seasons.
Thank you to the local farmer who enables us to have access to this most peaceful environment!
The situation provides fantastic views of countryside
