About
This is the oldest purpose-built library in Scotland and was founded on the collection of Robert Leighton, Bishop of Dunblane, 1661-1670. In his will, Leighton left a sum of money for the building of the library for use by the clergy of Dunblane diocese. The library now houses around 4,500 volumes printed in 89 languages, including Greek, Persian, Syrian and Gaelic. Still to be seen in the library are "Twelve chairs of turkie red lether", part of the original bequest. Under the guidance of our amazing volunteer custodians, visitors are allowed carefully to handle and inspect volumes from the collection. The library is open from the beginning of May until the end of September Mon-Sat, 11am - 1pm. Free to visit but donations much appreciated!

A historic gem - well worth a visit.

The Leighton Library is named after Robert Leighton who was Bishop of Dunblane between 1662-1670 and Bishop of Glasgow from 1670 to 1674. The building was built in 1687 as a result of the bequest of his extensive private library to the town, along with £100.

As one might expect, the bulk of the books are religious, but there are also many interesting books to do with travel, history, natural history, general literature and even the travel journal of Queen Victoria’s journey to the Highlands, which she donated to the library in 1868. Of further Royal interest is William Sanderson’s account of the execution of Mary Queen of Scots, and to bring Royal connection more up to date, the Queen visited the library in 1967.

Currently entrance to the library is free, but I would encourage all visitors to make a donation to help towards the maintenance of the beautiful building and the fabulous collection of books it contains.

And thanks must go to the dedicated and very knowledgable trustees and volunteers who look after this invaluable collection and make it available to others.

A unique place, a gem for bibliophiles and a fascinating opportunity to reflect on the life of educated people over the 300 years since it was established. Two enthusiastic and friendly volunteers shared their extensive knowledge with us. The visit really enhanced our tour of the lovely town of Dunblane. Do check opening hours - it's run by volunteers and is only open for a couple of hours a day, May to September, 6 days a week.

A tiny place but filled with antique books - for an acquired antiquarian, bookish public.

Worth a quick visit, unless you are an expert if antique books and want to spend longer, the staff in this charming little private library, are more than happy to share their knowledge with much affability.

Quick visit with friends

This is a great place to bring friends for a short visit. The library is very old and steeped in history. The books are lovely with copper plate writing and leather bindings.

Interesting to young and old alike the library is hosted by volunteers. Some with more knowledge than others but always an experience to behold.

10/10 for charm, interest and originality.
