About
Monte Generoso is situated in the heart of a nature park known beyond Switzerland’s borders. Standing majestically on the mountain’s rugged plateau is the new “Fiore di pietra“ (stone flower). The building was created by the famous architect Mario Botta and features picture windows that frame the breathtaking panorama. Two restaurants flooded with light and a conference room with magnificent mountain views provide the ideal setting for fine dining, unforgettable family celebrations and exceptional corporate events. The “Fiore di pietra” is designed so that a partition wall can section off a separate room for up to thirty guests. Since 1890, a rack railway has provided transport along a picturesque nine-kilometre stretch of mountain scenery carrying passengers from Capolago on Lake Lugano to the mountain summit at 1704 m altitude. Monte Generoso offers visitors plenty of opportunities for relaxing strolls, more demanding hikes and for delving into history.

Must hike from Como
Aug 2020 • Couples
Stayed in Lake Como but got 2 very easy buses (C10 and C20) to our starting point in San Fidele in Telvi.

The whole walk was just superb. It rained quite hard at the start but this proved to be a blessing as it heated up during the day.

The ascent took us 3 hours 15. It took very different terrain through the forest, into the village of Orimento then up on the mountain.

The views really were spectacular so it's a clear day I could reccomend enough.

It's a lovely climb and not overly challenging. We got very lost of the way down attempting different routes which is all part of the fun so took us 4 hours! Would leave plenty of time for your bus back.

I'd also suggest leaving early so you kiss the crowds and the worst of the heat. We started our ascent from the village just after 8 and wouldn't have done a thing differently.

Dear Liydcc, thank you for your review. Yes, hiking in the morning is more pleasant above all in the summer but according to the weather there are also shorter paths to choose from. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

On a clear day
Jun 2020
Do not go up on a cloudy day, not worth the rather expensive railway ticket. The hike to back to Bellavista is not extremely easy.

Lovely day trip from Milano or Lugano
Sep 2019
Nice ride in a fairy tale train to the top of a mountain overlooking the region of lake Lugano. Train stop adjacent to railway station. You may also hike all the way up or down. Lovely scenery. A modern building by famous Swiss architect Mario Botta with modern conference room, gourmet restaurant and cafeteria at the top. In the conference you may see a video on the challenges faced during the construction of the facility.

Great day up the mountain
Sep 2019 • Friends
We took the rack railway to the top, which is the last of 3 stops on the way up the mountain and takes approximately 50 mins. Good facilities await at the top inc cafe, restaurant, shop, toilets etc.
A short walk to the summit platform is a must if you’re okay with heights as the views are amazing.
There are a number of walks out from the top of varying lengths and difficulties, we chose a route that shadowed the rail line back down to the second stop (Bella Vista) and it took around an hour to walk. This could’ve been continued down to the next stop but we decided to hop the train for the rest of the journey to catch the views.
Definitely recommended as it’s a great day out, make sure the weather is good though

If you can do one thing!
Aug 2019
This was fantastic - absolutely the most beautiful place. I took a small train trip to Capolago (its an easy trip and you cant get lost) and then took the tram up the mountain. I realised after i could have got off at the second stop (Bella vista) and walked up but instead i went to the top, had a good lunch with a view at the cafeteria and then walked to the peak, walked down and around - it was brilliant.

What a fantastic view!!!

Why travelling / flying to countries far far away if you have such splendid views and landscapes just around the corner? The trip with the old train was nice and having lunch in the restaurant on top was the cherry on top!

Fantastic Lugano view
Jun 2019 • Solo
This day I choose a train trip to the south in canton Tessin. I took a special train to go up Monte Generoso.
I found it on the net and it’s really beautiful for a trip. The train trip is very nice and in Capolago-Riva S. Vitale I changed on the rack train to go up the mountain. The trip shows the beauty of Tessin and with a couple of stops you’re on top. You can get off earlier and walk up. On top a unforgettable view is waiting over the mountains and Lake Lugano. I walked around and walked to a little top. Again the view is unforgettable. Wetter should help because clouds can block it. There is a restaurant what is partially self-service. Nice clean place and friendly staff. I took chicken with salad. Price-food is ok. A must if you visit the south.

My tip is to plan you day inclusive a stop in Lugano, what is a very nice town. The view here is great too. I did my trip with the train what spares you traffic jam at the Gotthard tunnel. Enjoy the country and nature.

Great view

We were lucky that the weather was beautiful with quite clear sky, so we could totally enjoy the amazing view to the crystal Lake of Lugano. Really wonderful.
In addition, the train trip to the peek was fantastic too.

Great hiking on the border of Switzerland and Italy
Oct 2018 • Couples
There are numerous well-marked trails from the summit, some of which extend down old smuggling routes into Italy. We hiked from the trailhead in Orimento, Italy, about 6 kilometers to the summit. The trail winds uphill through active grazing land (some inhabited by a herd of wild horses), through abandoned ancient villages, and across high pastues with beautiful views. A constant sound along the trail is the clang of cow bells used by local farmers to locate their animals. As you near the summit, you can catch glimpses of both Lake Como and Lake Lugano if the weather is clear. Once on top, there is a cafeteria and full service restaurant with full bar service with an outdoor deck in an ultra modern structure that is reminiscent of a James Bond villian's hideout.
The summit is serviced by the Monte Generoso cog railway that carries passengers to and from Capolago at the base of the mountain on the Swiss side.
