I hadn´t expected it - such a museum in a tiny italian village in the middle of nowhere! And all this thanks to a local teacher who himself manufactured the wax figures and who guides the visitors around the museum, explaining symbolics behind the exposed items. I relive the experience every time my faith in humankind hits the rocks.

The small town of Rocca Imperiale offers quite a few glimpses into the history of previous centuries, but this place is wholly modern, and owes its existence mainly to the efforts of the high school professor who is in charge of the Museum. He has been manufacturing the wax statues as well as the many embalmed items which populate the museum, his activities spanning over the last 15 years or so.
Apart the galleries devoted to famous people (popes, politicians, actors, singers among them), I wouldn’t miss the section devoted to the embalmed marine creatures; we were told that at the time of our visit a giant 8m-long squid, captured a few weeks earlier in the waters of the north Ionian Sea, was under preparation, and would be exposed shortly.
The building hosting the museum is interesting in itself, the old convent of "Frati Osservanti" (Observant Friars), with its beautiful cloister, all properly restored. Other museum sections are hosted inside, including the mineralogical section, the one related to arthropodes, as well as the medieval one containing objects of everyday usage of long time ago.
Book a couple of hours for this visit, this is a surprising place you wouldn’t expect to find in this small town.
