Sertao Zen
What people are saying
Exquisite hike through multiple geographies ending in a breath-taking waterfall!
Mar 2016
First this is a 16km hike, so will take between 6 - 8 hours for the average hiker, and will leave you tired and sore at the end of the day. That said, it was the best thing we did at Chapada dos Veadeiros. The fast-changing scenery is the best thing about it - we passed through all different kinds of flora before arriving at a natural spring bubbling up in a field, where we refilled our bottles. Then we hiked down, and as multiple springs combined, they formed streams, and then a creek, and as it descended further, dozens of little waterfalls are created: some elegant and gentle, others robust. This is where the hike really lives up to it's name: Zen Garden. The falls, stones & rocks, and plants all look so neat and ordered you,'d think someone planned it. You could stop and swim in them if you wanted, but the best swim comes later. After two creeks combine, they form a raging waterfall that falls down into a pool at the very top of the enormous sertao zen waterfall. I'm going to guess it's 150 meters tall, maybe more. You can walk to the lip of the waterfall and look out over it, and even climb down to a lower tier on this waterfall (when we went, it had rained so much, we couldn't go to the lower tier). We had lunch and swam in that high pool, then hiked back up a little and around the side where we got money-shot views of the waterfall itself (and got heart-tumbling, edge-of-the-world pictures of us by the waterfall) Then the hike back. The big downside of this hike is that it is not a loop, so you see the exact same geography on the way back, at which time you're exhausted, and those steps back up the mountain seem to take forever! You end it all deliciously tired, and thrilled for the experience. Pro Tip: the hike starts steep, so pace yourself gently at the beginning. It smooths out quickly, though.

Very long day and the nicest day in the nature in Alto Paraiso. Just our small group of 8 people and the tour guide and nature and nature. In total 16km which is not much but in the mountains is different. In the end of the tour excelent waterfall and view... not comparable!

The Sertao Zen is quite an experience. It is a journey to many sort of gardens, and waterfalls. The landscape changes every 3 kms, and the scenario is amazing!
