About
Katiki Point is home to New Zealand fur seals and Yellow-eyed penguins, along with many other coastal species. It is cared for by volunteers who have created a sanctuary for penguins. They optimize the habitat, maximise breeding success and survival and minimize disturbance. They need $20k per year to do this work so a donation of $5 pp is appropriate. The donation box is by the gate. The reserve is open from 7:30am to 7:30pm. Visiting outside this time creates stress on the penguins and in the past, has cost the lives of chicks so please respect this. Do not use a flash on your camera and do not go closer than 5 m to the wildlife. Retreat if they move towards you.

Access to the light house is closed until September 2022, no signage before embarking on the side trip from Moeraki up to it. It was not until we arrived that we discovered it had recently been closed. Some signage at the start of Lighthouse Road would be helpful.

A neatly cared for short walk to spots neatly above NZ Fur Seals that made for excellent watching.
7:30am is surely too late to see penguins heading out in the summer and the gate wasn't opened until 7:40.
Looking out to the South we saw dolphins including mum's nursing babies which was cool and definitely our highlight.

Short stroll to the lighthouse from the car park, but the weather was a little wild so our walk was short and sweet. Would love to come back and explore the walkway.

Amazing coast area. Brilliant views out over the ocean. Seals and gulls all over the place. The tracks keep you away from the penguins.
Best of it's a free walk. Thanks Moeraki ruananga for sharing.

Possibly best reserved as a fine weather exercise since you are in quite an exposed area all of the time. However, irrespective of the weather, you are likely to not only encounter a lighthouse that is very interesting on its own, but also an abundance and variety of wildlife and wonderful scenery. A trip to Moeraki, no matter how long or short, would be incomplete without spending a little time at this beautiful spot.

Far more interesting than the nearby boulders, the pleasant walk around the lighthouse is rewarded with great views of the sea, mountains, sea lions, and the occasional penguin.

We had a blast in Moeraki on our week break. We visited the lighthouse twice. We all loved the wildlife out there, so much to see. Seals, Sea lions both with young. Also Yellow eyed penguins. In the ocean we saw Common dolphin and Hectors dolphins and heaps of other wildlife. We are so lucky to have this at our back door. I highly recommend a visit but be respectful and keep your distance :-)

Really great and happy to recommend! A hidden jem I would say, not many people and a nice walk ”down to the beach”.
Note, a narrow road to get to the lighthouse, we were driving a motorhome so we were careful and drove slowly! And quite limited parking spots (ok, but probably can get busy).
We saw two yellow-eyed penguins just hanging out and easily visible! And ofcourse lots of sealions. We visited at around 5PM.
Really liked the vibe and atmosphere, not touristic at all!! Which was great. Only about 15 people and us. Free of charge, but you can chip in some coins to support the Lighthouse and the penguins.

We drive to Katiki Point Lighthouse from our campsite. It is a lovely 5-10 minute walk to the peninsula where the seals and penguins are. We saw lots of adult seals on the left side and many young seal pups on the right side in calmer waters. We didn’t see any penguins but it was a lovely walk never the less.

I was wondering how I could get there from the Moeraki turn off bus station. Me and my daughter are taking a bus there we do not have a car. How could we get to the lighthouse?

To get to the lighthouse, you will need to walk from the turn off. It is 6 km.
The reserve closes at 5:30 pm.

Hello! Can i know roughly what is the best time can we see the seals and yellow eyed penguins at Katiki Point Lighthouse? From my light reading, i understand that the yellow eyed penguins come ashore at dusk but based on the comments from past visitors, it seems like the penguins can also be spotted at noon. i'd like to know at which time will give me a better chance to see the penguins so that i can plan my road trip accordingly. Thanks all!

It is best to go from about an hour before sunset until anytime until darkness. Some are there for most of the day (guarding chicks etc) It's basically 'luck' on being in the right place at the right time. You are about 90% certain to see at least a couple, but it's a great place to visit even if the Penguins weren't there

Hi - what is wheelchair access like around the lighthouse. Don't want to take someone there and then disappoint them

It is not wheelchair friendly unfortunately. You wouldn't get very far down the gravel path (about 40 metres) before coming to a narrow gateway, impassable for a wheelchair. Even if it were possible to get through that gate, the path then turns into a grass track which is bumpy and rutted with rabbit burrows for the rest of the distance to where the wildlife are found.

The best time to see the Yellow Eyed penguins is sunset.(so between 5pm and 7pm) I think from memory the sanctuary closes at 7pm . How ever it may close later in the summer I don't no. Yes we did see some last time we were there. Oamaru which is not far away also has Yellow Eyed Penguins which you can see for free and also little Blue Penguins but you have to pay to see the little Blue penguins. sunset is the best time to see the Yellow Eyed and Little Blue penguins at Oamaru as well
I plan to go to Katiki Point to watch yellow-eyes-penguins in November.
Is there anybody who knows about closing time in November?
If you know it ,please tell me.
Hi.
I hope to make it in closing time.
I appreciate your kindness.Thank you.
